Unls you are immersed this nversatn wh other queer people, you may have thought, “That’s ridiculo.” I am here to expla.</p><p class="paywall">The notn that some of thk Buttigieg is not gay enough has an intifiable relatnship to the facts, which are that, for the purpos of this discsn, people who grew up queer this untry fall to two distct tegori of experience. One is the experience of never ftg , beg bullied by classmat for the way you walk, the way you look cloth, the way you h or fail to h—all the thgs that set you apart before you have language to scribe them. The novelist and sayist Alexanr Chee <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">has wrten</a>, “In the send gra, the boys would stop me the hall to tell me I walked like a girl, my hips swchg.” Millns of people have had a versn of that experience. And then there is the other experience, the life of blendg , only to surprise your classmat—or, more likely, former classmat who follow you on social media—wh the revelatn that you are gay. I am not argug that one tegory of experience is worse or more difficult or paful than the other. There are people who revel their specialns om an early age, and there are people who f but feel tormented by their ep secret. I am sayg only that the two kds of experience are very different. Though as grownups we have more ntrol over our appearance and performance, the gap experience follows to adulthood. Recently, a iend mentned that, after thirty years of teachg, she had mentned her wife class for the first time, surprisg her stunts wh the revelatn that she was gay—and I found myself momentarily marvellg at havg the optn to e out to one’s stunts or not.</p><p class="paywall">As part of his mpaign, and velopg his polil persona, Buttigieg has repeatedly told a pellg story about his g out. His is the story of someone who blend and was therefore able—or, one might say, forced—to choose the circumstanc and timg of his g out. He chose to wa a long time: until after he graduated om llege, after he had served the ary, after he had been elected mayor. Its msage to straight people is “We are jt like you, and all we want is the right to have what you have: marriage, children, a hoe wh a picket fence, and the right to serve the ary.” The visn of this polics is a society all rpects distguishable om the one which we live now, except queer people have succsfully and permanently blend . To be sure, all kds of queer people have been volved both kds of queer polics. But the polics of beg “jt like you” leav out the people who nnot or do not want to be jt like nventnal straight people, whether appearance or the way we nstct our liv and fai.</p><p class="paywall">Buttigieg embodi the send kd of gay experience and the send kd of gay polics.
