You jt uldn't tell they were gay. Shooter apparently liked this "you n't see the gay people" policy, nsirg what happened next...

The '80s: Marvel Bans Gay Characters (But Some Slip Through Anyway). Multiple ic book wrers have stated that Marvel wouldn't let them troduce any gay characters the '80s, possibly bee Shooter had ran out of bullsh exc after the Hulk YMCA ntroversy.
Why go through the trouble of makg your gay characters ls offensive when 's easier to ban them? The Comics Co Authory was also a problem, sce forbid "sexual abnormali" and "sex perversn" and, until 1989, they unted homosexualy as both.

In the late '80s there was a storyle where Northstar was heavily hted to have AIDS, but someone at Marvel mt have realized wouldn't look good to have their only gay superhero be HIV-posive, so they fixed by... Somewhere between all this sany, Northstar publicly announc his homosexualy for the first time, which was a bold move back then. Northstar's homosexualy was barely acknowledged for the rt of the '90s and, spe beg surround by perfectly sculpted abs and butts everywhere, he was never shown so much as glancg at another du (let alone beg a relatnship).
