Macdonald was gearg up to release a seri on Netflix, a kd of si-out talk show unimprovably lled “Norm Macdonald Has a Show,” which all the normal dience-pleasg nstrats of productn had been potedly erased. He happened to be dog some standup performanc San Jose, California, and I happened to be San Francis, so I me down wh my notebook on the morng tra. The plan was for to meet at his hotel and go to the Wchter Mystery Hoe, one of the lol tourist attractns—possibly the only lol tourist attractn—and, I hoped, a eful backdrop if our terview turned out to be a dud. It wasn’t. Macdonald met me the hotel lobby wearg sweatpants, sneakers, and a saggy orange polo shirt. He had jt woken up. His twentysomethg assistant, John Steere, led him to a meat sandwich and a bowl of dip, and he srfed that down as I etfully watched the clock. By the time we’d piled to an S.U.V. and arrived at the Mystery Hoe, we’d missed our slot, so we shgged and turned around. That was when I realized that, as far as the day went, I was ls a reporter rnerg an terview than a wrer on the Norm tra, along for the ri.</p><p class="paywall">Like many people my age, I knew Macdonald chiefly as the host of “Weekend Update,” on “Saturday Night Live,” the late neti. (One of the current hosts, <a href=">Col Jost</a>, has scribed Macdonald as his leadg mol the role.) Also like many people my age, I’d sort of lost track of him the or two sce then, a perd durg which he brought out three seasons of his own s (“The Norm Show”), a popular terview podst (“Norm Macdonald Live”), and a ic novel wrten as a fx memoir (“<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Based on a Te Story</a>”). Macdonald was a Canadian who had cut his teeth as a wrer on “Roseanne,” and his jok tend to take their am om a hard, dry <em>TV Gui</em>-and-flannel shtick. (“You know how they say guys have ‘gaydar’—they n see other gay people? I’m like that wh guys at my same level of smartns,” go one of his setups “Hler’s Dog.”) Yet he was a performer as much as a wrer, and his mature style turned on a rich vobulary of ps, ironized niceti, and smirks set agast his zonked-seemg adpan. No one was better at strgg out a joke between s setup and s punch le. And he gave off lambent joy about his art. My favore moment of our day was back his hotel sue, after the failed expedn, when he spontaneoly livered a kd of craft lson to his assistant, Steere, an aspirg ic who was workg on a b about dogs. It was a long, wdg exchange, but certa turns stuck wh me.</p><p class="paywall">“Right now ’s crowd work—ask about other dog owners,” Steere patiently explaed to , scrollg through not on his laptop. “And then I go to ‘Anyone have big dogs? I have a hundred-and-fifty-pound dog named Chewy. Chewy is a five-year-old Great Dane that my girliend and I rcued as a ty puppy.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">“Rcued,” Macdonald murmured to me. “I didn’t know what that meant. I ed to thk they, like, ran to traffic—”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“ ‘So sweet. Love him so much. Even slept wh ,’ ” Steere read. “ ‘We had <em>no</em> ia how big he was gog to get. Eventually there was not enough space for the three of —’ ”</p><p class="paywall">“All right, let me jt suggt this,” Macdonald said. “Don’t be aaid of sayg thgs simply.” He tallied the ponents on his fgers. “ ‘Do you like big dogs?’ ” Pse. “ ‘<em>I</em> have a big dog.’ ” Pse. “ ‘He’s a Great Dane! His name is Chewy. He’s <em>a hundred and fifty pounds</em>.’ That’s the end—that’s the big rmatn.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">“ ‘So now ’s jt Chewy and I, but, luckily, I disvered, Chewy is a chick mag.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">“To me, ‘chick mag’ sounds a b douchey, but whatever,” Macdonald said.</p><p class="paywall">“Chicks <em>love</em> my dog,” Steere offered. “And the close for that is ‘I adm ’s pretty awkward bangg a girl doggy-style while he looks on, nfed. I feel so guilty—’ ”</p><p class="paywall">“See, that’s a ltle b of a nfg joke,” Macdonald cut sternly. “Bee you don’t que unrstand why <em>he’s</em> nfed. The real joke there is what?”</p><p class="paywall">“ ‘I feel so guilty,’ ” Steere went on. “ ‘He gets me girls, and I cut off his balls.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">Macdonald gave a perplexed wce, then burrowed . “So the joke is”—he started untg off on his fgers aga—“he got you girls, you got to have the sex, and you feel bad bee you cut off his balls.” He furrowed his brow. “But sounds like you feel bad bee he got you girls and <em>then</em> you cut off his balls. I know you’re not sayg that, but ’s the orr.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">I sat at the edge of the room, entranced, as Macdonald verbally eded Steere’s whole act this way, adjtg sequencg, streamlg logic, and fe-tung for tone, clary, and pace. It was movg to see how alive he me the urse of that work. And was movg to wns his generosy, which I noted more than once that day. It is a cliché to fd ics bet by the Peter Sellers nundm: the feelg that there’s nothg there beyond the burst of radiance onstage. Macdonald had elements of that disposn—I was startled to see how nervo and keyed-up he beme the greenroom before his act that night—but the meanrg wasteland of his day was also enlivened by a stream of people who had e to lean on him. There was Steere; there was a relative wh a mental illns whom he patiently attend to by phone; and there were several iends and ics to whom he’d offered support. He told me that he’d recently put <a href=">Louis C.K.</a> and <a href=">Roseanne</a>, both newly personae non gratae, touch, wh the hope that they’d be able to talk through their reer llaps—a fact that I reported and that subsequently stirred some ntroversy around him. His logic, as he amed then, was that he wanted to be sure that they were strong enough to take their punishments. Well, don’t add up to much, jt a seri of facts, and I supposed that’s what a man’s life is, after all, but ’s more than that too.
