At my hoe there is an important person that’s feelg bad!”</p><p class="paywall">The paramedics found him unnsc on the bed, and repeated jectns of Narn—the anti-overdose sem—uldn’t revive him om what would later be scribed as a near-lethal cktail of e and hero. They shed him to Mriziano hospal and rolled him to the emergency room. He didn’t e to for three days, and by the time he awoke and began rpondg three of the five languag which he is fluent, his fay had sped om their villas and the prs had announced to the world who he was: Lapo Edouard Elkann, grandson of the late Gianni Agnelli, the so-lled unofficial Kg of Italy, who had turned his fay’s tomobile pany, Fiat, to an ternatnal giant. The handsome, dazzlg young public face of Fiat today, Lapo is worldwi director of brand promotn for Fiat Auto. But this time, as Lapo’s fay arrived at the hospal, fightg their way through a phalanx of meras and reporters, and the Fiat brass scrambled to squelch the news, the story began to emerge creasgly shockg stallments: first, that Lapo had been admted “for rpiratory problems of pharmalogil orig,” then, acrdg to police, that he had been taken om a “woman’s apartment.” The qutns everyone asked were: What woman? And where was Marta Stella, the love of Lapo’s life? She wasn’t even technilly a woman. Lapo had been found naked and unnsc the apartment of Donato Bro, a 53-year-old transsexual prostute known as Patrizia, who walks the streets one of the most notor quarters of Tur.</p><p class="paywall">Acrdg to police, Lapo had arrived at Patrizia’s place before midnight and partied wh her and two other transsexuals until nearly dawn. His mother, Marghera Agnelli, Gianni Agnelli’s pale, artistic, only dghter, uld have had her pick of royal suors, but stead she married a wrer: Ala Elkann, the handsome, suave son of a French banker. Now 55 and livg Rome, Elkann is a well-known televisn personaly and bon vivant and a sometime adviser to Prime Mister Silv Berlni. In many ways, Lapo was the child of his grandfather, the man all Italy knew as l’Avvoto (the lawyer), who had built Fiat to an dtrial plex that propelled postwar Italy to beg the world’s sixth-strongt enomy. Once timated to be worth $3.1 billn, Gianni Agnelli’s empire clud Fiat, the Juvent soccer team, the Châte Margx veyards, a partment store, an aviatn plant, and <em>La Stampa,</em> the Tur-based newspaper. Lked romantilly over the years to Jackie Kennedy, Ra Hayworth, Pamela Churchill Harriman, and Ana Ekberg, Agnelli was the sence of <em>la dolce va,</em> “and was well known Italian high society that he had a lifelong flirtatn wh the same substance that got Lapo to trouble,” acrdg to his bgrapher Alan Friedman.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Do you love me? That’s why I began alg the rds very early.” When Lapo was 17, his grandfather started him at the Piagg soter factory, where he worked “eight hours a day at the Typhoon assembly le for two months durg the summer.” He told his -workers that his name was Lapo Rossi. “I had long hair like the Jackson Five. I would say my father was a worker at Pgeot. They believed me until they saw me on TV at the Tur stadium, ught by the meras next to my grandpa.... I have never asked anyone for anythg. She vowed to have her revenge on all the men who had ridiculed her public but then e lookg for her when they were feelg sad and lonely: “Make them pay,” she said. “Absurd amounts of money. That money is my revenge. It’s the proof of their wardice.” She has said that her clientele reprents a wi mographic, cludg “important managers” and “soccer players.” But not until the summer of 2005, acrdg to her, did she meet the man who would make her world-famo, Gianni Agnelli’s geo grandson. “He worked for me, but that was not the sence,” Kissger says. “I gave him an opportuny to meet all the people I know ternatnal affairs. I let him share my life. I took him to Japan, Korea, and Cha. I ed him as a note-taker. But he was very perceptive. After he’d take not, I asked him what did he thk of thgs, and he would give me his ments, which were right on. This was a qualy very siar to his grandfather. In September 2001, jt after 9/11, Lapo arrived New York to bee the personal assistant of Henry Kissger, after Gianni Agnelli, whom Kissger lls his “bt iend,” had asked the former secretary of state to teach Lapo somethg about ternatnal relatns. Lapo has said that he was basilly Kissger’s gofer, spendg 30 mut every morng teachg his venerable boss how to e a personal puter, but Kissger says he was much more than that.</p><p class="paywall">“He lived a fast life, mostly wh Italian Italians om Italy who were based here,” says the lumnist Taki Theodorapulos, who would regularly see Lapo at the downtown Cipriani and other Euro hangouts Manhattan. Gianni Agnelli would e to New York to vis Lapo, who lived the Agnelli apartment at 770 Park Avenue (which would sell after Agnelli’s ath, January 2003, for close to $25 ln). Mar D’Urso, a longtime Agnelli timate, would often jo Kissger, Agnelli, and Lapo for dner. When I ll D’Urso, he says he n’t talk, out of loyalty to Lapo and his fay. “But,” he says, an terview he gave to <em>Corriere lla Sera</em> the day after Lapo’s overdose “is accurate.” At that time D’Urso said, “When Agnelli started spendg more and more time New York bee he wasn’t feelg well, Lapo would be very close to him.... Lapo uld ask [his grandfather] any sort of qutn, even the most discreet on. In 2005, however, GM paid $2 billn to bail out of the al wh the money-losg tomaker. “Fiat needs a se,” Lapo would say as he set out to fd a way to rcate the image of the pany’s rs for his generatn. He found an answer one weekend at a sailg race Portofo, where he ran to his old roommate Alberto Brci, who had lnched a luxury-sportswear pany lled Hydrogen. The first product he had put out was “l’Avvoto,” a repli of the jean shirt Gianni Agnelli had ma famo. That weekend Brci was wearg a <em>felpa,</em> or zippered sweatshirt, emblazoned wh the words CHILL OUT IN PARIS.</p><p class="paywall">Lapo loved the sweatshirt, Brci says, so he took off and gave to him, and wh that the two iends simultaneoly exclaimed, “Why don’t we do one for Fiat?”</p><p class="paywall">They chose a bold pany logo om the 1920s, and Brci went to work. Soon he showed up at Lapo’s office wearg the new <em>felpa</em> unr his jacket. His iend went wild for , and the Fiat sweatshirt, priced at 250 ros, beme Lapo’s first step a mpaign to revive the rporate image.</p><p class="paywall">“Lapo said, ‘Alberto, right now Fiat is not makg amazg rs,’” Brci remembers. “‘If you look at German, Japane, and French rs, you’ll see they’re makg nice rs at a very nice price. We have to change, to make rs that are better than they’re makg, but we n’t do om one day to the next. First Italy, then Europe, Japan, Rsia, and the Uned Stat, thoands of Fiat sweatshirts flew off the shelv. “We got $5 ln worth of publicy whout spendg one ro,” Brci says.</p><p class="paywall">“We will transform Fiat to a love mark!,” Lapo said as he proceed to stick the Fiat name or logo on sneakers, women’s handbags, motorcycle jackets, baseball ps, watch, luggage, and the pany’s own le of w—most of the products nspicuoly nsumed and promoted by the Fiat scn himself, the one-man personifitn of the radil chang afoot his grandfather’s pany.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Then me the rs. First there was the Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat’s pact luxury r, posned as a hip mol for affluent young women. Lapo helped create a jazzy, 10-mute promo to be shown movie theaters, along wh targeted cell-phone msag and a storeont Milan, which he turned to the rince of “Ms. Ypsilon,” an imagary Milane cutie. Acrdg to <em>La Repubbli,</em> Lapo had a star (for Stella) tattooed on his wrist, and Marta got an <em>L</em> for Lapo tattooed on hers. “After work he’d take a plane (always mercial—he don’t like private jets) om Tur to Rome orr to spend a night and a day wh her, and then go back to work aga,” says Brci.</p><p class="paywall">All Italy relished the sweet romance of the young Agnelli prce and his movie-star Crella, wh jt a few reported exceptns—namely, the Agnelli fay. In September 2004, a year before the overdose, Lapo’s brother, John, married his longtime girliend, Lavia Borromeo, on an island owned by her fay, Lago Maggre. The 700 guts at the receptn clud royals, policians, and dignari, rangg om Prime Mister Silv Berlni to Henry Kissger, to Elle Macpherson. Lapo arrived whout Marta, sparkg mors that Lavia Borromeo disliked the pretty starlet, although Lavia would later ny such reports. However, Lapo’s mother, Marghera Agnelli, was ls subtle, tellg an terviewer of her distaste not only for Lapo’s choosg an actrs for a girliend but also for his high-profile liftyle. “A lifetime of tryg to stay out of the media, and then you have a son who screws all up for you,” she was quoted as sayg the newspaper <em>Il Fogl.</em></p><p class="has-dropp paywall">A seri of tragedi propelled John and Lapo Elkann to the top of Fiat. When Gianni Agnelli died, he was logized by both the Pope and Italy’s prime mister. But Fiat shar had sunk 80 percent sce 1998, loss for 2002 were almost $4.6 billn, and the pany’s bt had been downgrad to junk stat. Agnelli never even nsired his only son, Edoardo, who by then had bee a hero addict wh severe psychologil problems and a epeng fascatn wh Islam. “The newspapers were wrg about Edoardo as a man who had disappoted the fay, and he was hurt,” says his iend Count Gelas Gaetani. “I believe this is one of the reasons he woke up and drove his r to the bridge.” In November 2000, wearg pajamas beneath a brown rduroy su, Edoardo drove his Fiat Croma to a viaduct known as the Bridge of Suicis, between Tur and Savona, and leapt to his ath. At the funeral, Gianni Agnelli was observed leang on Lapo, “almost nailed to the arm of the child that had bee a boy wh a head full of hair,” wrote Mriz Crosetti <em>La Repubbli.</em> “Gvanni Agnelli loved Lapo bee, probably, he remd him of himself when he was young—exuberant, easygog, a ltle crazy.”</p><p class="paywall">Alan Friedman adds, “Lapo and his brother, John, drs the same way Gianni Agnelli drsed: the tie wh the particularly large knot, short length; the button-down shirt, but the llar buttons open; the Rolex or Long watch worn on top of the sleeve.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">Agnelli gave John Elkann his Fiat votg rights, acrdg to <em>The Tim</em> of London, and bequeathed to Lapo most of his ctom-ma sus. Bee Gianni and Lapo wore the same size, the sus didn’t even need alterg. Wh his crown of curls and his grandfather’s sunken ey, pale plexn, and sense of style—which would earn him a place on *Vany Fair’*s Bt-Drsed List 2005 and e one young London woman to gh, “He mak English men look unbearably drab”—Lapo was Gianni Agnelli rernated. His ascent to the Fiat boardroom began May 2004, when tragedy stck once aga. Umberto Agnelli, l’Avvoto’s brother, who had taken ntrol of Fiat after Gianni’s ath, also died of ncer, and the pany’s C.E.O., Gieppe Morch, tried to seize the throne even before Umberto was lowered to the ground.</p><p class="paywall">“At the funeral, Morch was receivg people like he was a son, shakg hands like he was a member of the fay,” Count Gelas Gaetani tells me over a succsn of w his favore Rome trattoria. Long-haired, beard, ebullient, Gaetani is Italy’s most flamboyant we ambassador; once married to a Czano heirs, he is famo for openg, pourg, and drkg we as he plummets to the earth while skydivg. He is close to Gianni’s elst sister, Sanna, “Suni,” who at 83 is the facto head of the clan. He says the fay sprang to actn as soon as they realized that Morch was vyg to bee the head of Fiat. “Suni put the sisters together,” says Gaetani, meang Gianni’s three other sisters—Clara, Cristiana, and Maria Sole—who shed om their quiet, aristocratic liv to attend to the turmoil the Lgotto. Wh days, word me that Gieppe Morch was out, and he was soon replaced by Serg Marchnne as C.E.O. and Ferrari boss Lu Corro di Montezemolo as chairman. (Morch cled to be terviewed for this article.)</p><p class="paywall">“So, Gvanni Alberto ad, Edoardo ad, Umberto ad—the only keepers of the flame left, really, are the Elkanns,” says Alan Friedman. It was te that Fiat was on the rocks, “a ms,” as even Suni would later say. But if the pany was gog down, would go down wh Agnelli blood at the helm. John Elkann was promoted to vice-chairman of Fiat Group, and Lapo Elkann was named worldwi director of brand promotn for Fiat Auto. The young men’s mother, Marghera, dispatched lawyers to addrs the terms of her father’s will, which she felt favored her children by Elkann over her children by Pahlen. The matter was settled before reachg urt. Fiat’s future was now the hands of John and Lapo Elkann.</p><p class="paywall">Lapo was then 26.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">‘Run, Boy, Run!” That was the headle <em>Prima</em> magaze over an article about Serg Marchnne and how he would drive Lapo, as well as his team and Fiat at large, early the summer of 2005, durg the 100 days before the lnch of the r on which the tomaker had bet s future: the Gran Punto. There’s tradnal marketg, which is brochur, advertisg, TV mercials, and showroom signs,” a Fiat rep tells me his office the Lgotto. “And the other elements have been spun off and given to Lapo.” The other elements clu “below-the-le promotnal activi that enhance the brand,” cludg Fiat’s sponsorship of the Wter Olympic Gam Tur Febary (Lapo signed the Jamain bobsled team to reprent Fiat and appear to ads), product placement (Lapo got the Fiat Panda accepted as Jam Bond’s r the upg <em>Caso Royale</em>), special events, and whatever else Lapo and his staff n thk up.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Lapo lls his 30-member team his Samurai, and he assembled them not om the labyrthe hallways of look-alike offic the Lgotto but, acrdg to the Fiat rep, om “Co-Cola, Microsoft, and Proctor & Gamble—people who don’t have a motor-dtry md-set.” Most of them are unr 30. “It’s a volno of ias,” the Fiat rep says of Lapo’s partment.</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">‘That’s so ol!” beme Lapo’s recurrent rallyg cry as he sat surround by his Sat Bernard and his Samurai his whimsil office, which has been scribed by one wrer as “almost the room of a boy that hasn’t yet stopped beg a child.” It was filled wh toys, mol rs, gadgets, and a life-size Jamain mannequ on a hammock wh a sign readg, AT FIAT WE NEVER SLEEP. That was where Fiat’s veteran wizards of sign, marketg, and fance looked for their salvatn.</p><p class="paywall">“You have to remember that Fiat is not some sort of ttage dtry but a nearly $60-billn-a-year rporatn, a big multatnal,” says the Fiat rep. “So there is a team, and there are marketg and sponsorship experts, all feedg to the boss of this enty, which is Lapo. He has a big job.” Grg Airdo, Fiat’s tra-unn lear, adds, “In the begng, he said that every worker, whether you’re the tra unn or not, uld send him an e-mail, and many did wre to him, but that was stopped.” When layoffs multiplied, Lapo agreed to a suggtn for a rotatn of workers. “Some uld work ls, rather than beg dismissed,” explas Airdo. “That kd of ntact was unual for the Agnelli fay, and Lapo’s channel wh the workers was stopped.”</p><p class="paywall">“They tried to keep him out of the headl, but ’s impossible,” says Vera Schiavazzi, a lol wrer and journalism stctor. “He’s always on a first-name basis. ‘Oh, darlg!’ he’d say, and hug and kiss me, almost an embarrassg way.”</p><p class="paywall">“Tur and all of that life is very nventnal, and I thk this was very hard on him,” says Counts Mara Cigna. “His brother is married and is a much more together person. In my opn Lapo really don’t have anybody to n to and dish the dirt, you know?” As a rult he beme a publicy junkie and would sh toward journalists wh his thumbs up, “to symbolize everythg is O.K.,” as one wrote. “He vents a new thg almost every other day, om the fés [the latt, the Fiat Café, opened Milan April 2005] to the five-star beach [sponsored by Fiat, on Sardia]. All the reprentativ of exclive events fight to get him as a gut star, as do the newspapers.”</p><p class="has-dropp paywall">In the area around the Park of Valento, the prostut told reporters, Lapo drove a variety of Fiat rs, cludg, acrdg to a transvte named Ivana who spoke to me, “a Maserati!” They say he was seen cisg the streets all sprg and summer, always discreet, anonymo, unually quiet for him.</p><p class="paywall">After his overdose, the prs scend and the streetwalkers explod a vocifero chos. One drag queen said she had been wh Lapo three tim, and he was “very pole and genero, a real gentleman.” Another, a Brazilian transsexual, remembered how Lapo cised to a stop and intified himself only as Eduardo, seekg mostly nversatn. “He spoke a very good Portugue,” she said, “and said he had studied Brazil.... He treated me like a prcs. His looks, though, were sad. He always looked like he was beggg for affectn.” One of the prostut told the TV show <em>Striscia la Notizia,</em> “He would e often, about every two days.” When she was told that he had a betiful girliend, she rpond, “That’s jt ver-ups, there are always ver-ups.... Lapo is a habual client.”</p><p class="paywall">Police say Patrizia told them that she often procur multiple partners for special clients, and that sometime late the summer she took Lapo off the streets. In one prs report she later said she had met him at “a private party,” where she wore her ctomary miskirt and knee-high boots. She relled another article that he was very drsed down. “When he told me he was Lapo Elkann, the grandson of Gianni Agnelli, I thought he was makg fun of me.”</p><p class="paywall">Lapo’s publicist ni that Lapo equented the area. “I worked wh him day and night, travelg nstantly, and he was not a client of the transvt,” she says. I knocked on Donato Bro’s ground-floor door. No one answered, and several passg tenants told me, “She’s gone,” addg that she had fled to Milan, disguised a blond wig to avoid reporters.</p><p class="paywall">As I was about to leave, the door burst open like a shotgun blast, and a short, bald, fat john hurried out. At that time I got sred,” she said.</p><p class="paywall">That drove Patrizia to do somethg that simultaneoly saved Lapo’s life and wrecked . She picked up the phone.
