For twenty-three years, was the most fluential, and often the most tertg, publitn of the Amerin right, champng a ls dreary and more adventuro nservatism, one that sisted that Washgton was the center of human events. But, durg the past five years, the magaze had lost about a third of s prt subscribers and some three ln dollars per year. In the send week of December, the C.E.O. of the <em>Standard’s</em> parent pany, Clary Media Group, told the staff that would close the magaze and transfer subscribers to a new nservative publitn that was already the works, a weekly supplement to the <em>Washgton Examer</em>. That Friday, the staff threw an Irish wake at the home of Andrew Fergon, perhaps the magaze’s most eloquent wrer. Bill Kristol, the <em>Standard’s</em> founr, remd them that his father, the pneerg neonservative tellectual Irvg Kristol, had tled a book “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Two Cheers for Capalism</a>.” Maybe, Kristol said, should be eded down to one cheer.</p><p class="paywall">In the prs, the magaze’s mise was a media story, nfed to the si pag and told a tone of half-sympathetic remiscence. But the ath of the major tellectual journal of nservatism, at a time of profound transn for the right, is about more than the strategic lculatns of a media holdg pany Denver. The cisive turn nservatism durg the half when the <em>Standard</em> shed subscribers and, eventually, s owners’ fah, was toward Tmpism, an evolutn that the <em>Standard</em> opposed so vociferoly that for a long time has been hard to separate Bill Kristol’s public persona om the anti-Tmp e. (As the 2016 Republin Conventn neared, Kristol had antilly tried to rec a challenger to <a href=">Tmp</a>, a somewhat quixotic effort which he was turned down by Jam Mattis, Mt Romney, and eventually a <em>Natnal Review</em> lumnist named David French.) The divisn over the Print among nservative él has been pecially sharp of late, as Mattis and Nikki Haley, favor among Washgton nservativ, left the admistratn, and Romney published an op-ed attackg the Print two days before assumg his Senate seat. The <em>Standard’s</em> sourc, iends, and sensibily were on one si of this divi. Many of s subscribers, fatally, were on the other.</p><p class="paywall">Many journalists spend their reers at the mercy of one billnaire or another. The <em>Standard’s</em> first owner was Rupert Murdoch, whose media portfol was broad enough that the magaze’s edors tsted him to have reasonable expectatns. (At the origal pch meetg, Murdoch turned to one of his executiv and said, “Let’s make sure we don’t lose too much money,” John Podhoretz, one of the magaze’s founrs, said on his podst.) In 2009, Murdoch sold the <em>Standard</em> to Philip Anschutz, a Republin billnaire who ma his fortune oil and railroads. One is si Washgton, a prtige that guarante both s fluence Republin admistratns and ngrsnal offic and s accs to important sourc. The <em>Standard</em> never really lost this currency, spe s rift wh the Print. The fal issue’s ver story was a iendly terview wh Haley, who seems as likely as anyone to lead the Republin Party after Tmp. But, for the magaze to thrive, required a broar brand, too. For years, to name-check the <em>Standard</em> was to project a certa image: that you were nservative whout beg btish or anti-morn, that you had some ecumenicism and tellectual style. That kd of currency filtered back to Colorado, where some of Anschutz’s executiv at Clary Media moved Republin donor circl. “Whenever Mt Romney or Pl Ryan or Cory Gardner would go through Colorado and have an event, they would say, ‘Oh, you guys own the <em>Standard</em>! It’s great,’ and they liked beg part of that,” the senr <em>Standard</em> edor told me. The ra st was not unlike the one supplied by <em>The Enomist</em>—name-drop a mundane settg and suggted that you had accs to a broar and more imagative world.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">In the Tmp years, the <em>Standard’s</em> reputatn Washgton held. Ryan McKibben, a Clary Media executive, “tried to get The Standard to hire highly partisan shock-jock screamers,” David Brooks, a <em>Standard</em> alumn, wrote the <em>Tim</em> last month. “He tried to tilt more the directn of a Republin direct mail fund-raisg letter.” By Memorial Day, 2016, when Kristol’s efforts to fd a challenger to Tmp beme public, the nflict wh Denver had epened. McKibben spoke wh Kristol. “He was surprisgly upset,” a source faiar wh the nversatn said. “He said this wasn’t what Phil Anschutz wanted om the magaze.”</p><p class="paywall">Soon after the electn, Kristol gave the job of edor--chief to Stephen Hay, one of the <em>Standard’s</em> most proment wrers, part to try to ease the tensns, but his own partisan apostasy had e to fe the <em>Standard</em>. Kristol <a href=">told me last year</a> that on the magaze’s cise 2017 he’d been acsted by some of his own subscribers, who told him that the magaze’s anti-Tmp stance was too rigid and that the <em>Standard</em> had lost s way. “People don’t like beg at odds wh the group they’ve been part of, one way or the other—the crowd at the dner party, or at the untry club. It’s psychologilly more difficult to sta than one would have thought,” Kristol said last week. “You believe what your peer group believ.” The Washgton crowd, the Gee Conways, are on his si, but the untry club is on Tmp’s. Last sprg, Hay, wh Anschutz’s permissn, started searchg for a buyer for the magaze; the summer, Clary Media executiv asked him to stop. When they pulled the plug, December, they required all the staffers to sign “non-disclosure and non-disparagement” agreements or else risk their severance pay.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">“If you know very ltle you thk ’s about Tmp,” one <em>Standard</em> staffer told me. “And if you know almost everythg then you thk has almost nothg to do wh Tmp. But if you know absolutely everythg there is to know you realize really is about Tmp after all.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">What has been lost all of this is the magaze. It uld be appealgly var. As sgular as Kristol’s neonservatism was, the <em>Standard</em> did not so much have a hoe style as a bunch of wrers unr one roof, and so uld veer om the punkish (Matt Labash) to the stylish (Andrew Fergon) to the mative (David Brooks) to the stacto and didactic. The most-read article the magaze’s history is a 2002 feature by Jonathan Last, which argu that “the ep lson of Star Wars is that the Empire was good.” My own readg of the <em>Standard</em> over the years leaned heavily on Labash, a Gen X cynic who tend to see rptn everywhere, ls for his Mencken affect than for his sharp sense of how human weakns and vany uld direct the urse of public events. Watchg Roger Stone champn Donald Tmp’s ndidacy for the Reform Party’s Printial nomatn, 2000, Labash noticed Stone mountg the mpaign b, which was named A Touch of Class, and announcg, “I’m here. Who needs to be spun?” The sential qualy of the Tmp apparat, s un-embarrassabily, was laid bare, two s ahead of schle.</p><p class="paywall">When I e-mailed Labash a few days after the news broke, he did not want to talk about the circumstanc of the <em>Standard’s</em> cle, but he was eager to talk about the magaze. “Here’s what a lot of people miss about the large shadow Bill st over the magaze,” he told me. “His own staff wasn’t always le wh him. We had pro-Tmpers on staff. I personally wasn’t a neon, or for the Iraq War, or for Sarah Pal.” To him, the magaze always worked on two levels. “On one level was all the noise of what Bill was up to, the headl he ptured, the Twter grenas he lobbed,” he said. But “on the send tier, there was always a lot of fe wrg gog on this magaze that vered the wateront. Freedom matters. And Bill was a eedom lover. Not jt for the people of Iraq, but for his wrers.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Sometim a b too much eedom. One joy of wrg om a nservative pot of view was that you uld more openly flout the tellectual nsens, but that had some obv sts. The <em>Standard</em> uld liver a humane and revelatory portra of Marn Barry, the disgraced former mayor of Washgton, D.C., his cle; and stubbornly sist, 2003, that Osama b Lan and Saddam Hse had been hoots; and, 2018, that Print Tmp should not only end the “war on al” the U.S. but also fance the velopment of al energy poor untri. The flip si of an sentially romantic publitn was an aristocratic crly toward the wanted to believe .</p><p class="paywall">By Thanksgivg, the end was clearly near. Wrers who often worked om home me , out of an stct to be together rather than apart. The junr staffers were so sick of hearg om iends that their reers would not suffer once the magaze closed that was a relief to be the office and away om the well-wishers. Alongsi the existential qutns there was a pragmatic one. It seemed very likely that the issue that closed the first week of December would be the last, and yet the magaze uld not formally acknowledge , bee no fal verdict had arrived om Denver.</p><p class="paywall">Eventually an ia emerged: a books say that close-read the last l of novels. <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The task fell to Alice Lloyd</a>, a young staff wrer and former middle-school English teacher who was relatively new to both journalism and the <em>Standard</em>. She queried the staff. Many people remend the last le of “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Great Gatsby</a>,” which she found weighty and ternally ntradictory. Fergon reced, om memory, the ncln to Sl Bellow’s “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Seize the Day</a>.” She assembled a long list of last l and then, wh her edors, began refg , so that as <em>The Weekly Standard</em> neared s end a portn of s staff was highly focsed on the last l of novels. When the fal issue appeared, wh Haley on the ver, Lloyd’s say was the only, elegant ht that somethg was over, even as argued that endgs are not what they seem. “To be tly termal, last l mt land, maybe moth-like, on ath,” Lloyd wrote. Otherwise, they left possibili open. “The bt last l don’t let anythg end.”</p><p class="paywall">Some edors are said to be seekg fundg for a revived <em>Standard</em>. Even if that succeeds, will surely be a smaller operatn, and the wrers will evably stter, many of them out of nservatism entirely. Whatever you make of the <em>Standard’s</em> edorial le, isn’t hard to see the nature of the loss. The nservative movement right now is populated by lears who do not like Tmp but who have not been able to envisn a future for the Republin Party that do not clu him and that n still spire the grassroots. They need more tellectuals, not fewer.
