Atlanta-area dancers who specialize a style lled “buckg” (or “J-Settg”), which has spread om dance teams at HBCUs (historilly Black lleg and universi) to bee an unrground queer Black subculture across the South. The skill tak to execute the style’s precise, meticulo mov — not to mentn the sheer thrill of watchg teams of 5-8 men jumpg, twirlg, and kickg perfect unison — should ed be reason enough to earn them a spot on the Vegas strip. The entire cultural history of buckg uld never be ntaed by an 85 mute documentary, but this film’s goal go beyond simple historil bookkeepg. <em>When the Beat Drops</em> tells a unique story about the myriad ways race, genr, and sexualy work tanm to privilege some forms of art while actively margalizg others. Why did the story of “buckg” seem like an important one to tell?</strong></p><p>In 1995, I was closeted, and I cid to go to Atlanta for Gay Pri. So I go to a club and I’m on the dancefloor, livg my life. The next thg I know, the boys e out wearg whe boots and Hooters outfs and start dancg. Then this other team and they start battlg. I sat there for four hours watchg them go at . It was crazy that they had so much choreography, everybody knew the choreography, and that they uld swch up at any pot. The next day, I went to Piedmont Park for a big battle and there were maybe ten more crews there. I realized that this was a thg that I had no ia about, so I started gettg a lot of rmatn about the culture. Cut to twenty years later and I’m tryg to figure out what I want to do. I knew I wanted to direct and tell a story, but as a choreographer, people tried to pigeonhole me. They would say, “You’re jt a choreographer. You n’t direct.” So I took my meras down, went down and started filmg, and found this rich world. teams when we started. I didn’t thk they liked each other, so we schled a different team [to e ] every hour. It was crickets until 9:30, and then [ma character] Anthony walked through the door and brought everybody wh him. They had lled each other to ask, “What do you thk about this? What is [Jamal] tryg to do [wh our story]?” They me to the room wh an attu — they were really protective of their world. I thought they would want to get exposure, that they would jump at the opportuny. But was the total oppose. They told me that they were aaid I was gog to make a mockery of what they do. So I explaed my se, I told them that I’m a gay male dancer myself and that [their story] is really somethg up my alley and that I would love to show them the bt light. They took a while to thk about , but then they fally agreed. So was a tough start.</p><p><strong>I n actually unrstand how they would be reluctant. In the documentary, there’s a nng theme about the tensn between private and public liv, and how many men who do this at night have very different jobs durg the day — jobs that might fire them if their volvement this subculture ever gets out.</strong></p><p>As I learned more about them, I realized was a generatnal thg. I found that the olr the guys were the more reluctant they were to share their stori bee they were aaid of gettg fired or of what their fai might thk. The younger on seemed like they didn’t re. More like, “I don’t re if I lose my job. I’ll jt go to another one.”</p><p><strong>Is really generatnal though? One of the film’s most heated moments when a group of younger dancers start discsg a recent viral vio that shows J-Setters buckg the Christmas para. Though they were J-Setters as well, many seemed firmly agast the ia that buckg should be shown public and to fai. They disapproved of the attire — booty shorts, crop tops, etc. — and seemed to adhere to certa rpectabily polics.</strong></p></div></div></div><div class="GridItem-buujkM fVLMby grid--em I thought they would be more on the si of, “Let’s do . Let’s all get out there and jt do .” But many of them were kd of stuck this whole mentaly of, “We’re already Black. Now we’re gay.” It was this three-strik thg. I’ve been there before too, but I hate that we feel like this. We need to change that. We have to be proud of who we are — of who God ma to be — and keep movg. What I realized as a Black gay man myself was that, up until I met the guys, I had never publicly said I was gay — even though I had been wh my partner for at least seven or eight years at that pot. After I met them, and some of the younger boys were like, “I’ll do the middle of the street, I don’t re,” gave me a ltle more urage. After every terview, I would thk, “Why am I hidg?” Filmg this, I realized that I have to be thentic. That’s my philosophy now, but really wasn’t before I started filmg. As soon as I did that, seemed like the world opened up for me.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><strong>Do you thk buckg n ever go mastream?</strong></p><p>It’s hard for me to know bee this style is so specific to the South, and I don’t know if would translate to people worldwi, or even natnwi. I know uld, but only if was done properly. The funny thg is, Beyoncé’s “Sgle Ladi,” the choreography is all buckg, if you thk about . Her choreographer, JaQuel Knight, actually told me, “Oh yeah, we took some of that, some of this.” Of urse, I uld see all through the vio — even the ltle majorette outfs. But bee she didn’t cred or say “this is buckg,” the world didn’t really know where me om. They jt thought was some ol dancg.</p><p><strong>One of the thgs I liked most about this film was how was centered on Anthony, who is a big guy and someone we wouldn’t typilly expect to be a dancer.</strong></p><p>I sured the earth tryg to fd any footage of Anthony dancg the ‘90s bee, om what I hear, he uld wear anybody out. High kicks, spls, he was dog thgs that people jt uld never see a 300, 400-pound man ever dog. I wish we had that footage bee I really wish people uld unrstand jt how much of a powerhoe he really was back his heyday. I jt wish we uld have seen him, as a big dancer, dog his thg. He started this and weight was never an issue.</p><p><strong>If viewers n walk away wh one thg om your film, what would you want to be?</strong></p><p>We fd the people that are great people, really great guys, and I thk you uld easily jt unt them out as dancers that are jt twirlg at the club. But they’re so much more than that.
