I have been lookg to the notn of masculy relatn to gay culture. For this blog post I will be discsg what (Dyer 2002) has wrten about Charl Hawtrey and Rock Hudson and their ntributns to the unrstandg of masculy. For anyone unfaiar wh the actor Charl Hawtrey om the Carry On films you… * charles hawtrey gay *
Hawtrey guard his relatnships very refully, perhaps no surprise an age when male homosexual behavur Bra was illegal and punishable by a prison sentence. As a flamboyantly gay man, he attracted the kd of attentn that was ght wh danger the 1950s. But unlike many homosexual public figur, he never pretend to be anythg other than his te self.
This was his very last Carry On assignment, although the films ntued until the end of the (he was to have played Cecil Gaybody the next film, 1973's Carry On Girls, but the role went to Jimmy Logan stead). In each one he embodi the gay effemate man, even whilst playg characters that clearly have wiv.
This character he nsistently plays tak ‘mpns’ to the extrem, which effect mak the dience believe he is unniably gay, but choosg to ntue to play this stereotype whilst at the same time playg a straight character is ed as a il tool. By livg up to peopl expectatns of a gay man he is que obvly challengg nventns of the mascule man.
