David … sent msengers to fetch her, and she me to him, and he lay wh her.” (2 Samuel 11:2-4)</p><p class="">This erasure of the bisexual nature of David's affectns is worth ntemplatg as we mark Bisexual Awarens Day today. Many mastream nomatns and ngregatns have ma signifint progrs welg and affirmg lbian and gay people. The fah muni have weled LGBT people to their ngregatns and learship and rporated the fight for LGBT equaly to their social jtice work. Some ngregatns have even begun to rpond to the needs and ncerns of transgenr people. But the “B” the LGBT acronym is still largely ignored.</p><p class="">This visibily of bisexuals many fah muni mirrors their visibily society at large. A <a href=">recent study</a> shows that nearly one-third of Amerins unr age 30 nsir themselv bisexual. In spe of this, and spe the lived experience of many men and women, there is a wispread belief that bisexualy is not a real orientatn. Consir the <a href=">dtup</a> July between actrs/mol Cara Delevgne and Vogue after the magaze ran a story suggtg that Delevgne’s bisexualy was a phase: It is evince of the dismissive – and, ultimately, harmful — attus many take toward bisexualy. In fact, <a href=" target="_blank">rearch shows</a> that bisexualy is a distct orientatn. A 2013 Pew Rearch Center Survey found that <a href=" target="_blank">40 percent</a> of those who fall unr the LGBT umbrella the U.S. experience romantic and sexual sir and attractns toward people of different sex and genrs.</p><p class="">The failure of society at large to regnize bisexuals — much ls embrace and wele them — exacts a paful toll: That same Pew survey of LGBT people the U.S. found that jt <a href=" target="_blank">22 percent</a> of bisexual people said their sexual orientatn was a posive factor their liv, pared wh 46 percent of gay men and 38 percent of lbians. The Pew survey also found that bisexuals are more likely to be closeted than their gay and lbian peers: jt 28 percent of bisexual rponnts said they were out to the most important people their liv, pared wh 71 percent of lbians and 77 percent of gay men. It is perhaps not surprisg, then, that rearch also shows that bisexual people have higher rat of hypertensn, poorer physil health, and <a href=" target="_blank">higher rat</a> of smokg and e of alhol than lbians, gay men, and heterosexuals.</p><p class="">As sanctuari, spirual hom and beans of social jtice, fah muni have a particularly important role to play providg for the spirual and social needs of bisexual people.
