Formed 1980, the anizatn strived to provi a nurturg environment where gay Asians uld fd support through shared personal experienc and exchange of rmatn. The group had s genis after artist Richard Fung attend the 1979 Natnal March on Washgton for Lbian and Gay Rights, spirg him to lnch an anizatn that would create a sense of clivy and belongg for the Asian Canadians Toronto.
When Fung got back om the nference, he ntacted Gerald Chan, an activist who had published “Out of the Shadows”, an article on beg gay and Che, the Toronto-based magaze Asianadian. As an anizatn, GAT aimed to promote uny and mutual support among gay Asians by anizg social, cultural and tnal activi for their members. GAT’s ma polil goal was to create a llective gay Asian muny as a source of empowerment.
