and htled porn star om 1997’s <em>Boogie Nights</em>, were to fd himself 2016, he might look somethg like Mikey Saber—the bedraggled adult film star who occupi the enzied center of <strong>Sean Baker</strong>’s latt film, <em>Red Rocket</em>. Unlike Dirk, Mikey hasn’t been railed by dgs and the advent of home vio. It’s simply time that got him, his work dryg up after 20 years the bs. Pennils and, would seem, homels, he returns to his native Gulf Coast Texas, ready to start a starry-eyed scramble all over aga. </p><p>Baker ma a fascatg choice when stg Mikey: the MTV VJ turned actor turned rapper <strong>Simon Rex</strong>, who also did some (solo) porn as he was gettg started as a mol. Like Mikey, Rex’s heyday was around 25 years ago too; his legacy has largely been rced to “remember that guy?” snickers and a sort of nspiratorial knowledge shared by many gay men their 30s and 40s who timately knew Rex’s earlier work.</p><p class="paywall">Which is all to say, Baker’s choice is a rather perfect one— ntextual terms and actual on, too. Rex’s performance is fleet and nimble, gregar and shad darkns. He and Baker make stacto mic together, as Mikey’s profile shifts om hangdog loser to somethg far more plited. <em>Red Rocket</em> is yet another example of Baker’s keen handlg of actors, profsnals and not.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Like much of Baker’s other work, <em>Red Rocket</em> is a discursive ramble, gallopg along after Mikey as he tri to make nice wh his tranged wife (<strong>Bree Elrod</strong>) and her spic mother; returns to the the weed slgg tra he plied his teens; and tri to figure out his next move. We are rootg for him some ways, bee Baker’s films are always passnate even toward the ls than moral, and bee Rex imbu him wh such ragged charm. Mikey is an appeaser and an optimist, quick wh a joke and a pliment, swiftly fosterg an timacy between himself and a stranger. He’s likable, spe his obv ms. </p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="hjvkw"></div></div><p class="paywall">But as the film unfolds, we beg to see somethg sister there, too. Mikey is cluelsly va, an unendg braggart ever monologug about past porn-world glori. And n’t go unnoticed how hollow Mikey’s iendls actually is; he’s g everyone around him, climbg over them to get back to his salad days of AVN awards and Hollywood hom. Manipulatn naturally to him, so naturally that he might actually be a socpath.</p><p class="paywall">Rex ftly librat this portra of a regular guy gone rotten wh self-tert, a man who once trad on his good looks (and still do to some extent) searchg for his next angle. He fds the form of a teenage girl named Strawberry (<strong>Suzanna Son</strong>, makg an spic film but), who works at a donut shop and is immediately taken by this solico storm blown om another ast. The portns of <em>Red Rocket</em> unnervgly pict a kd of groomg, a procral wearg down of norms and hibns that, Mikey’s se, wh a rrg-do se. Rex, dartg and shy-eyed and ever-movg, potently munit the menace of Mikey’s prence, perhaps only visible to at a nsired distance.</p><p class="paywall">That’s a grim subject for a film as bright and fun as <em>Red Rocket</em> often is. But that is typilly Baker’s m.o., to prent liv the margs all their ambivalent dimensn. Is somethg bigger about Ameri beg said here, hted at all the TV news snippets about the impendg 2016 electn heard the background? Maybe. <em>Red Rocket</em> might be about the nsumg Amerin mache, which sps out s waste as nsum other liv. But I don’t thk Baker is really tryg to be that sweepg. The film is bt viewed as a tricky character study, one about the undulatns and relentls mands of self-worth—and, of urse, of money, which is always a foc of Baker’s films. </p><p class="paywall">I don’t thk Rex himself ever knew this level of speratn as his own cur reer meanred through time. But he seems to unrstand somethg fundamental about Mikey Saber—not, I would hope, the character’s predatory impuls, but perhaps his memory of a glowg center to which he once stood much closer. To get back to that nex place—where money and fame and perhaps even pri nverge—one might do some pretty nefar, selfish thgs.
