Offhandly seeg a few episos wh iends over the years did nothg to improve s reputatn. From what I uld tell, <em>Friends</em> was a show about Straight People Antics maly nsistg of bad romantic munitn, slavish votn to genr rol, and a shy veneer of mid-twenti promiscuy.</p><p>But last week, as I sat down to tentnally watch the show for the first time, I realized I’d been wrong about the show. <em>Friends</em> is more than jt a goofy seri of ntrivanc based on hyperbolilly strict standards of heteronormativy; ’s a show about beg regularly harassed and huiated for performg a queer sexual or genr inty, maly by one’s clost nfidants. And though ’s temptg to give the show some slack bee of s cultural ntext, that don’t actually exce any of s toxicy. In fact, wh the benef of hdsight, ’s easy to see how the show bolstered homophobia and transmisogyny our culture for years to e.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>Often, when <em>Friends</em> unr fire for s msy history wh queerns, fans and advot pot to the way the show was received upon s arrival the mid-90s. <a href=">Commentg</a> on the show’s one-night revival 2016 for the <em>Chigo Tribune</em>, Bethonie Butler oped that “[w]rg <em>Friends</em> off as homophobic ignor the cln of Ross' ex-wife, Carol, and her partner, San,” two supportg characters who helped propel the show to two GLAAD Media Award nomatns and one w for Outstandg Comedy Seri.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>It’s certaly te that any semi-rpectful portrayal of lbian love 1990s televisn was rare at bt, but that don’t mean San and Carol’s plotle was <em>good</em>. As supportg characters, their relatnship is nstcted primarily to make Ross unfortable and emasculated by appearg to tmp his agile masculy. In Butler’s mentary, she c GLAAD Director of Entertament Media Ray Bradford as sayg Helena “wasn’t what we hate seeg on TV by a e” bee “there was nothg tragic” about her story — except, of urse, the years of huiatn and rejectn om her fay. In fairns, pared to the wealth of media featurg trans characters as ad sex workers and crazed killers, Helena is a downright realistic and enjoyable character: she’s a great performer wh a fabulo high-femme style and a strong sense of self-assurance. It’s everyone around her who has issu, and that sense, her cln really did reprent a step forward for televisn, holdg a mirror up to 1990s Amerin culture all s unflatterg glory. It's easy to look back and assume that tolerance is <em>really</em> what's beg mocked; led away om Chandler’s mother to avoid g a scene, Moni's father remarks “I didn't even get a chance to pretend I'm okay wh ,” one of the show’s most barbed one-lers.</p><p>But to leave the discsn there is to ignore the eper problem wh <em>Friends</em>: s “realistic” portrayal of cultural attus towards queerns end up rercg those same attus, not drivg society forward. Although female characters like Phoebe are allowed to explore their sexuali, ostensibly-cis men like Joey, Ross, and pecially Chandler are not given the same chance wh their genr. Instead, they’re ridiculed and shamed for the slightt viance. In a c-plot durg “The One Wh Chandler’s Dad,” Joey disvers the thrill and fort of wearg women’s unrwear and gh to Phoebe about how he’s “always wonred about” pantyhose, while Ross is revealed to have taken on a female inty, “Bea,” durg childhood; both are roundly mocked (wh Phoebe even tellg Joey that “’s important” for him to take off the panti and reprs the feelgs they give That’s not a good thg for a show that peppers random episos wh queerphobic subplots and throwaway gags.</p><p>If you n enjoy <em>Friends</em> 2018, more power to you, but be hont wh yourself about what you’re watchg: a bunch of whe people stg around and makg fun of whoever “acts gay” between hookg up.
