ATLANTA - The streets of Midtown Atlanta were packed Sunday morng as thoands me out to celebrate Atlanta Gay Pri. Atlanta is often referred to as the gay pal of the South due to s progrsive reputatn, highly visible and robt LGBT muny, vibrant LGBT nightlife culture, and a growg number of LGBT people relotg to the cy.
In 2010, The Advote named Atlanta the "gayt cy Ameri. Spurred by the uprisg’s natnal attentn as well Atlanta’s own Lonome Cowboys raids, 100 monstrators—mostly whe mal—marched down Midtown’s siwalks rryg “Equal Rights for Gays” posters. This small act of prott sent rippl through the cy’s gay muny.
Mayor Maynard Jackson clared the day of the para, June 26, to be Gay Pri Day Atlanta. The followg year, Mayor Jackson issued a subsequent proclamatn for Civil Liberti Day after facg backlash for his emphasis of Gay Pri 1976.

Activist Larry Lghl wrote The Barb, “If the [1977] March did nothg else but show other gays our potential, was well worth the effort. Though not a part of the official Atlanta Pri Para, Hotlanta River Expo’s gural year attracted more than 300 gay men raftg down the Chattahoochee River. By 1989, the event had grown to one of the largt gay events the Southeast.
Back on land, Atlanta Pri officially beme Atlanta Lbian, Gay, and Transperson Pri 1980. The followg year, Lbian, Gay, and Transperson Pri Week was celebrated lolly by an timated 3, 500 participants. Programmg expand beyond the tradnal para and rally to clu a live ncert, rad show, art show, film ftival, history symposium, block party (on 7th Street between Piedmont Avenue and Juniper Street), voter registratn drive, and an open hoe for the cy’s Atlanta Gay Center and Atlanta Lbian Femist Alliance headquarters.
