Dpe his flntg relatnship wh Rachel, Matt has been the victim of gay mors. Our gay ntent clus naked celebs, dick and penis pics, hot scen om movi and seri, and nu celeb vios. In Queer Domtici: Homosexualy and Home Life Twentieth-Century London (Palgrave, 2014), Matt Cook explor queer men’s experienc of home and homemakg the metropolis.

An important and signifint break wh prev studi, cludg his own, that privileged public arenas the formatn of homosexual subcultur, Queer Domtici stead illumat how the personal and the private ntributed to buildg ternnected relatnships and muni.

If so, how do your se studi illumate queer hom even the absence of homosexual partnerships? JB: Queer theorists have posed that vtment home, and related plicy wh palism, ntribut to a policized homonormativy. How do your study support or refute the associatns of queer domticy wh homonormativy?

MC: I thk that is too simplistic to figure home as apolil or hetero- or homo-normative. Romantic socialists Edward Carpenter and Charl Ashbee through to the squatters and munards of the Gay Liberatn Front have shown how home and the anizatn of domtic life uld be a part – and a fundamental part — of livg radilly and explorg what radilism associated wh sex, genr and sexualy might mean. JB: The Sexual Offenc Act (1967) dified the ‘rpectable’, domtilly stable, monogamo uple as the only valid optn for gay men.

Particular prsur and anxieti were a part of everyday life for many gay men post 1967. The issue of homelsns has been so prsg for many queer men, yet too often we are unable to tell specific stori and are stead only able to refer to the homels as a group and so misleadgly imply a homogeney of experience.

I was very aware too of how disproportnately whe my acunt is, reflectg part the ways which queer and gay liv have been renred culturally. I do try to engage crilly wh the relatnship between race and gayns — partly via my Brixton and Nottg Hill se studi and the home life of photographer and artist Ajamu X.
