For Swift, the cisn to <a href=">re-rerd her earlier releas</a> was likely born om vengeance and mercenary stct: 2019, the label that owned the masters for her first six albums was sold to the mic manager Soter Brn, wh whom Swift has heatedly clashed the past. She has sce re-rerd the albums “<a href=">Fearls</a>” and “Red,” addg the poted appendage “(Taylor’s Versn)” to the new releas. For Wt, revisn feels like an extensn of his overwhelmg ambn. In 2016, mere hours after releasg his seventh LP, “<a href=">The Life of Pablo</a>,” Wt famoly announced, on Twter, “Ima fix wolv,” a reference to an apparently unfished track. Ultimately, he upload new or tweaked versns of more than a dozen songs post-release. In another tweet, Wt referred to the album as a “livg breathg changg creative exprsn,” addg the hashtag #ntemporaryart. Last year, Wt announced the release of the Stem Player, a beige, okie-shaped vice that is signed to allow ers to disassemble a track to nstuent “stems,” dividual mil ponents that make up the song. Perhaps there’s a moment the creative procs where a work gets very close to beg “right”—when an artist’s tentns for a piece and a bystanr’s experience of briefly ci—and tkerg after that pot merely ph the work out of alignment. Yet I still tend to thk of revisn as a generative and unrvalued practice, one that’s been stymied and marred by the damagg yet endurg ia of art as a product rather than a procs. Stunts oned craft-focsed creative-wrg programs are repeatedly told that “wrg is rewrg,” wh the ia beg that the actual labor—the work—is the meticulo hong, the refg, the worryg over, the pickg apart, the makg betiful. This is also, for many artists, where the pleasure is; one chisels and scrap until a face emerg om the stone. Perhaps, as the poet Pl Valéry wrote, a work of art is never really fished, merely abandoned. Maybe ’s important for an artist to let the work change as the artist chang—to progrs, to actualize, to double down on self. It’s a way of reclaimg mic as somethg more plex, dynamic, and human.</p><p class="paywall">This past sprg, support of the reissu, Lekman toured the U.S. and performed wh lol youth orchtras. “I wanted the thgs to happen at the same time, bee feels like they’re tied together a way,” he told me. “I want the songs to be motn, I want them to be allowed to change, I want to see what the young micians
