In addn to talkg about how he me up wh the ial ia for the seri, John discs his procs for preparg for mentary tracks, receivg royalty checks, and the real reason that Bce Banner's name was changed to David for the show. <br/> <br/> <div data-cy="accent-divir" class="jsx-2008757641 divir"></div> <br/> <br/> <strong>IGN DVD: I've been a huge fan of <em>The Incredible Hulk</em> sce I was a ltle kid, and one of the thgs that stood out to me wh the DVD set was how well the episos hold up today when you watch them. To what do you attribute this longevy? <br/> <br/> Kenh Johnson:</strong> Well, 's funny. When I went back to do the mentary on the pilot, I told Universal I would do , and then as I was approachg , I thought, oh, God, what is this thg gog to look like? Bee I hadn't looked at 25 years. But I started screeng and I found myself immediately gettg ught up , and I thk that the succs and the longevy om the fact that 's based on really classic material. When I wrote , I had been readg <em>L Miserabl</em> at the time so I had Jean Valjean and Javert and the fugive ncept my head, and I took a ltle of that classic Victor Hugo and a ltle of Robert Louis Stevenson's <em>Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hy</em> and really imbued the origal pilot wh that sense of human drama. [Also], bee I really set out to me all of the emotns that somebody like David Banner would go through unr the circumstanc. And when I got Bill Bixby to be the lead, Bill jt absolutely h all of the not that I asked him to h, and he immediately ught you up his emotnal life. I thk 's that batn of emotnal life and basis the classics that have ma as succsful as is. <br/> <br/> <strong>IGN: So many of the tails you clu your mentary are really tertg, like the fact that the cematographer for the pilot also shot <em>The Magnificent Ambersons</em>. Had you done mentari before this one, or how did you put together your mentary track for this set? <br/> <br/> Johnson:</strong> The first mentary that I did was for my mi-seri <em>V</em>, and I listened to a bunch of other mentari before I did that, and a lot of them were very borg and very obv. The director would be sayg, "now the actor is walkg om the right si of the screen to the left si of the screen." I was like, we n see that! Tell what else is gog on - what are you dog wh the actors, what are you dog wh the mera, what's gog on unrneath and behd the scen. It was important to me to be able to be a ser stunt of film, the sense of what my thkg had been creatg a particular shot or sequence. So I went back and dug out my origal script, my shootg script - I have all of my director's scripts - and all of the not that I had about st and crew. I went on the IMDB and searched up everybody's creds so that I uld really talk about them tail. <br/> <br/> So when I'm stg dog the mentary, I've got a mic stand ont of me wh all of the not on , so that I n really plot through, and then I look at the film and beg to get a sense ahead of time where I want to talk about what - where is a good place to talk about this particular thg - and then if I'm dog a mentary, I lerally check stuff off as I go along to make sure that I've vered all. I mt say that the reactn people have had has been very gratifyg bee so many people, not even jt film stunts but jt folks tell me that they're really mentari that they really enjoy. <br/> <br/> The first one I did was for <em>V</em> and the send one was for <em>The Incredible Hulk</em>, the pilot and the two hour "Married" episo, which gave me a chance to talk a lot about Bix's personal life and the difficulti he'd had losg his child and all of this terrible stuff. Recently, I did one for the pilot of <em>Alien Natn</em>, which has jt e out on DVD wh the whole seri, and aga, the procs was the same. <br/> <br/> <strong>IGN: A big part of the stuff you talk about clus the cisn-makg that went to how much of the ic source material you would reta for the TV show, like you had the ia to make him red. <br/> <br/> Johnson:</strong> Yeah, I lled Stan Lee and I said, man, what's the logic of green? Is he the env Hulk? Is he green wh envy or jealoy? The lor of rage is red, which I was also phg for bee 's a real human lor - you know, when people get flhed wh anger. That mak sense, but the Hulk turns green. And Stan told me, "well, actually he started out grey, and then our prter me to " - not the publisher, but the prter - " and said we n do a pretty nsistent green, so we cid to go wh green." I said, Stan, that's not really very anic! But that was a battle I uld not w; at least I got to change Bce Banner's name to David, but I uldn't make the Hulk red bee he was jt too inic already the ic books. <br/> <br/> <br/> <strong>IGN: In the mentary you dited your disclatn for allerative ic book nam. Can you clear up once and for all why you chose to change his name on the show? Bee the mor has circled for s that folks thought Bce was a 'gay name'. <br/> <br/> Johnson:</strong> I don't rell feelg that way at the time, bee Bce Wayne was a pretty straight guy. But was more the alleratn that bothered me, the Lois Lane, Clark Kent, that sort of thg, and as always I was tryg to get as far away om the ic book origs as I possibly uld. I mean, virtually the only thg I kept om the ic book was gamma rays and green and metamorphosis, and everythg else was ma up out of what I hoed to be prented as the real world. So on those two, I did full mentari. The mentary I did on the pilot is now on the new set for Season One, and if they had asked me I would have done a mentary on "A Death the Fay," but at Universal, the left hand don't often know that there's a right hand. Well, not only Universal; I thk 's systemic wh all of the DVD operatns. A fan told me that <em>Alien Natn</em> was g out on DVD, and I lled Fox and said is this te, and they said, "well, yeah." I said, wouldn't you like me to do a mentary on the pilot movie? "Oh, would you do that? We didn't know where to ll you." <em>Please</em>. It was like lerally a last-mute thg - I thk I did , and two weeks later was productn. <br/> <br/> <strong>IGN: Are there other episos om Season One that you might like to rerd a mentary for? <br/> <br/> Johnson:</strong> I thk I might have been fun to go back and do the Tim Square episo. It's so funny - God, was eezg. It was Febary or early March and was like two gre Tim Square, but I sort of had the fantasy of seeg the Hulk n through Tim Square jt to see if anybody would notice. We did a uple - we had a shot where we were leadg him down the street, and did a uple of shots there, and then we went over to Park Avenue and got some shots over there that really tied him wh the cy, where you uld really see the Pan Am buildg down while Lou was nng toward . He had ltle half-sho on and no cloth and was jt eezg, and his whole fay me over om Brooklyn, which was really a hoot. To walk to his trailer and hear all of that Brooklyn dialect - "hey, Louie, you looked great out there!" - was such a hoot. But if they do manage to release subsequent seasons, then they'll put the mentary that I've already done on "Married" the send season. <br/> <br/> I would [also] like to do a mentary on "Promeths," which is the other two-hour episo that I wrote and directed. There's a zilln great stori about dog "Promeths," bee looked like a huge movie. My pilot for the Hulk was released Europe as a theatril feature, and I got a ll om Universal one day and they said, "ngratulatns - you've got the top-grossg motn picture Europe." I said what are you talkg about? They said 's been the top-grossg movie for two months. And 's a funny story bee about six months later I got a check om Universal riduals, and they said, "that's your share of the profs for the foreign theatril [release]." I said, the foreign theatril that ma $10 ln? And my share was six dollars and 71 cents (lghs). But that was jt the wrg check. I got my directg check later for three dollars and 25 cents - so I almost ma ten bucks.
