Amelia there I'm a 00:02 Yale traed clil psychologist and 00:04 I'm also a former rearch profsor and 00:06 high tate I ed to be the director of 00:08 a labs tellg anxiety and prsn 00:10 and today honor of Pri Month I'm 00:13 gonna be talkg about key rearch 00:15 fdgs about mental health the 00:17 LGBTQ muny let me tell you about 00:20 about my experienc recently I'm New 00:23 I've been walkg around a lot and no 00:24 matter where I look I seem to fd a 00:26 pri display by the way if you're a 00:28 different part of the untry I would 00:30 love to hear your experience so please 00:33 but anyway everywhere I look every store 00:36 seems to have some sort of pri flag or 00:38 logo or some sort of msage about 00:40 acceptance or love and I thk this is 00:43 fantastic I thk 's amazg that 00:44 every year more and more people and more 00:47 and more pani are supportg pri 00:48 we know that more visibily leads to 00:51 greater acceptance so that's all very 00:53 good however is also the se that 00:56 the LGBTQ muny ntu to face a 00:58 number of stggl so we need to talk 01:00 more about that as well and this is 01:02 particularly the se when we look at 01:04 mental health we have twice as much the 01:06 likelihood of havg a mental health 01:08 disorr as our straight or cisgenr 01:10 unterparts the differenc bee 01:13 even more pronounced when we look at 01:15 suicidaly or high-risk behavrs so 01:18 today I want to talk more about mental 01:20 health the LGBTQ muny we need to 01:22 rm ourselv and I'm gonna be 01:25 tellg you about three different thgs 01:26 first of all the prevalence of disorrs 01:29 so we n better unrstand the 01:30 magnu of the problem send I'm 01:33 gonna be tellg you about some of the 01:34 most tertg fdgs the last 01:36 few years tryg to unrstand what is 01:38 drivg is higher rat of mental health 01:40 problems start I'm gonna be tellg 01:43 you about adaptatns of CBT protols 01:45 so they n better serve the needs and 01:47 the specific challeng of LGBTQ folks 01:50 at the end I'm gonna be sharg some 01:52 tips wh you on what you n do to help 01:55 your iends who are the LGBTQ 01:56 muny so let's get started so first 02:00 what is the prevalence of mental 02:02 disorrs the LGBTQ muny well as 02:05 I mentned before we are twice as 02:06 likely as I'm straight and sistren 02:08 unterparts to have a mental disorr 02:10 and this cuts across the world anxiety 02:12 prsn substance abe psychosis you 02:16 name so 's ditive of very 02:18 marked differenc and reflects a big 02:21 problem the differenc are even 02:24 much more pronounced when we look at 02:26 suicidaly so for example LGBTQ youth 02:29 are five tim as likely as are straight 02:32 and cisgenr appears to have attempted 02:35 suici and there's this really 02:37 tertg survey om The Trevor 02:38 Project and there's a lk below showg 02:41 that 18 percent of LGBTQ youth reported 02:44 attempted suici last year not 10 years 02:48 ago not 20 years ago last year so even 02:52 though we're makg a lot of progrs 02:54 a lot of ways 's very clear that we 02:56 still have a long way to go when 02:57 to mental health and also when we 03:00 look at the transgenr muny 03:00 suicidaly is a huge problem 40% of 03:05 transgenr people have reported 03:07 attempted suici at some pot their 03:09 liv that's one two and that's ne 03:13 to 10 tim higher than the average for 03:16 so we're makg a lot of progrs a 03:18 lot of ways but 's very clear we still 03:21 have a long way to go send what 03:25 acunts for differenc mental 03:27 health between the LGBTQ and the 03:29 straight and cisgenr muni well 03:31 we don't que know we don't have a 03:32 fe answer 's a very plex 03:34 qutn and 's gonna take a long time 03:36 for to figure out but what I n 03:38 tell you is that a lot of rearchers 03:40 have been dog very ol work the 03:42 past or so so I'm gonna be 03:44 tellg you about some of my favore 03:46 studi right now I'm gonna start by 03:48 tellg you about - mory strs 03:50 mol this is a really ol and elegant 03:52 mol that has fluenced a lot of the 03:54 rearch over the years and 's que 03:57 basilly we've known for a very long 03:59 time that strsors are associated wh 04:01 and lead to mental health problems so 04:05 what my orr is intify different 04:07 typ of strsors that place an extra 04:09 burn on the mental and emotnal 04:11 health of the LGBTQ muny and 04:14 there's two typ of strsors 04:15 the first one are distal strs 04:17 the are thgs that sort of happened 04:19 out there and they happen to like 04:22 victimizatn or bullyg or vlence or 04:25 discrimatn and then the send type 04:28 of strsors are strsors that have 04:29 more to do wh how we react to 04:31 suatns for example ncealment of 04:33 our inty or ternalized homophobia 04:36 or shame or excsive fear of rejectn 04:39 and you n image how the two typ 04:42 of strsors are nstantly teractg 04:44 wh each other placg a really 04:46 strong burn on the mental health of 04:49 LGBTQ folks so the studi that I'm 04:52 gonna be tellg you about right now 04:53 have actually tted different piec of 04:56 this mol a number of populatns 04:58 wh the LGBTQ muny some buckle 05:02 so the first tell you this one is g 05:04 om the Universy of Washgton and 05:05 's lled the impact of mory 05:07 strs on mental health and substance 05:09 e among sexual mory women 's a 05:11 survey of 1, 400 women who intify as 05:13 lbian or bisexual and what the 05:15 rearchers found was that ternalized 05:17 homophobia ncealed inty and 05:20 victimizatn were associated wh more 05:22 symptoms of prsn and more 05:24 substance abe problems what I fd to 05:27 be the most tertg on this telly is 05:28 that each one of those three strsors 05:30 was penntly associated wh the 05:32 mental health problems so that means 05:34 that each one of them was acuntg for 05:36 a ltle b of more variance every 05:40 no strsor is too small they're all 05:42 acuntg for variance our mental 05:44 health they all matter on to the send 05:47 study this one is g om Harvard 05:50 and om Hunter College and 's lled 05:52 genr mory social strs 05:54 adolcence dispari adolcent 05:56 bowlg and substance e by genr 05:58 inty 's another survey study this 06:01 time 5, 500 our lsons and roughly 450 06:04 of them intified as beg a genr 06:06 mory well the rearchers found was 06:09 a beg general mory was 06:10 associated wh a greater likelihood of 06:12 substance abe problems basilly one 06:14 pot five to two tim as likely as the 06:17 non genr mory peers what I fd to 06:20 be the most tertg about the study 06:23 be the victim of bullyg mediated 06:25 the relatnship between beg a genr 06:27 mory and havg substance abe 06:29 problems so what do mediatn mean 06:31 this is a statistil analysis and 06:33 basilly allow the rearchers to 06:35 figure out that the relatnship between 06:37 beg a genr mory and havg a 06:39 substance abe problem uld be a 06:41 unter force so uld potentially be 06:44 ed by beg the victim of bullyg 06:46 now keep md that we nnot 06:49 necsarily draw al ferenc here 06:51 bee this is rrelatnal data but 06:53 nohels this is a super super 06:55 tertg study so the third study 06:57 's g out of Yale Universy was 06:59 actually done by two of my former lab 07:01 mat my former rearch mentor so 07:03 here go a big shout-out to Mark Hudson 07:05 Muller he's now a profsor at Columbia 07:07 and to Kay McLghl who is now a 07:09 profsor at Harvard the name of the 07:11 study is emotn regulatn and 07:13 ternalizg symptoms a longudal 07:15 study of sexual mory heterosexual 07:19 's another survey study of about a 07:21 thoand middle schoolers but here they 07:23 did two time pots so Taiwan and then 07:25 time two which was roughly seven months 07:27 later and what the rearchers found was 07:30 that same-sex attractn was associated 07:32 wh more anxiety and more the prsure 07:34 both Co sectnally and over time but 07:37 more tertgly that relatnship was 07:39 mediated so was partially or fully 07:42 acunted for by difficulti regulatg 07:45 emotns and so this a way is 07:47 providg support for the mory 07:49 strs mol right the lk between 07:51 beg a sexual mory and havg 07:53 mental health problems has a lot to do 07:56 wh pg wh strsors has to do 07:58 wh alg wh the environment and 08:00 wh all the thgs that sexual mory 08:02 teenagers have to face so very very ol 08:05 study and then on to the study number 08:07 four this one is a study g out of 08:09 Yale CUNY and also hunter and 's 08:12 lled daily mory strs effect 08:14 among gay and bisexual men a 30-day 08:17 diary study so this is a study of 08:19 approximately four hundred gay and 08:21 bisexual men and has a diary format 08:24 so if I wonr what's a diary study 's 08:26 actually really really ol sign so 08:29 stead of actually askg people to 08:30 tell how they've been dog over the 08:32 past month or a few months a diary 08:35 every day how are they dog what 08:38 strsors are they're facg how are 08:40 they feelg what the rearchers found 08:42 was that one gay and bisexual men were 08:44 enunterg mory strs their 08:47 posive emotns sort of went down 08:49 their experience of negative emotn 08:50 went up but what I fd to be really 08:53 tertg about this study is that the 08:55 effects of enunterg strs lger 08:57 to the followg day so the more 08:59 strsors they experience say on a 09:01 Tuday and the more negative emotn 09:03 and the ls posive emotn they will 09:05 report experiencg on a Wednday so 09:07 this is to me is fascatg bee 09:09 once aga unrsr the lgerg 09:11 effects of enunterg mory strs 09:14 and for the third part of the vio this 09:16 is where thgs get really upliftg 09:17 we're gog to be talkg about 09:18 treatment right and how to improve the 09:20 health of the LGBTQ muny so what 09:23 I'm gog to tell you about right now is 09:24 my most favore study this is studied 09:27 by John p'chenk is om Yale Universy 09:29 and 's lled LGBTQ affirmative 09:31 gnive behavral therapy for young 09:34 adult gay and bisexual men a randomized 09:37 ntrol trial of a trans diagnostic 09:39 mory strs approach so this is a 09:41 study which John basilly took CBT 09:45 protols for anxiety disorrs and 09:46 tailor them to the needs of gay and 09:49 bisexual men as per their mory 09:51 strs mol so you might rell om my 09:54 CBT vio that CBT pris two typ 09:57 of techniqu right thkg about 09:59 strsors differently and behavg 10:01 differently the face of strong 10:02 emotns so by thkg of the mory 10:05 strs mol we n see that you know we 10:07 uld thk of emotns we uld thk 10:09 of suatns differently by puttg 10:11 to perspective all the strsors were 10:12 facg and the role they're playg 10:14 our thkg and also when we're feelg 10:16 strsed when we are victims of 10:18 difficult suatns right n be 10:20 very temptg to behave pulsive 10:23 ways to drk a lot to e dgs to have 10:26 a safe sex and so on and so forth so 10:28 what the protol did is tght 10:30 clients how to behave differently the 10:33 face of those strong emotns and was 10:35 both to those very difficult suatns 10:37 the protol lasted about ten weeks and 10:40 they they found some really tertg 10:42 stuff so pared to participants 10:44 assigned to a wa list those who were 10:48 rctns prsn alhol e 10:50 pulsive sexual behavrs and also 10:52 risky sexual behavrs there were no 10:56 chang terms of anxiety or 10:58 terms of mory strs but this is 11:01 probably bee the treatment was 11:02 relatively short but nohels is 11:04 an credibly promisg le of work you 11:08 know you uld expand on a uple 11:09 of ways right you uld make even 11:10 shorter so you n actually dissemate 11:13 more wily and get to more people or 11:15 you uld actually make even longer 11:16 to try to get through that anxiety 11:19 that mory strs that this 11:21 particular length of time didn't allow 11:23 for but anyway really really tertg 11:25 stuff I'm exced to see what's next 11:28 do you guys have qutns by the way or 11:31 unrstudy of another studi please 11:33 leave me a ment below I greet them I 11:35 rpond you n also msage me on 11:38 social media I'm on Instagram dr.

The fight for gay rights the Uned Stat has e a long way sce the Stonewall Uprisg of 1969, when gay and trans patrons of the Stonewall Inn New York Cy fought back agast police tryg to arrt night marked the begng of the gay rights movement the US, a s-long fight that jt a few years ago rulted the momento 2015 Supreme Court cisn legalizg gay marriage the lg on June 26, 2015, didn’t end the stggle for equaly and protectn. Across the untry, LGBTQ Amerins still face legalized discrimatn unr the law when to hog, jobs, parentg, and even June, ’s important to celebrate how far the US has e regnizg gay rights — and to be proud of that fact — but only if we also remember how far we still have to go to ensure that the equal rights and digny of LGBTQ Amerins are regnized unr the are some of the battl for equaly that are still beg fought across the untry.
