GAY WHISTLER & GAY SKI WEEK – WTER PRI

When Whistler’s first gay ski week was held Febary 1992, was a relatively small and discreet event; s lack of advertisg and visual prence ma easy to miss when gog through the lol newspapers and archival rerds om that time.

THE ULTIMATE GUI TO GAY SKI WEEKS AROUND THE WORLD

In 1992, Brent Benaschak, who had recently opened a bed and breakfast Whistler, wanted to create a gay-iendly space both on the mounta and the valley while also attractg new visors.

His pany, Out on the Slop, produced Altu, the first rnatn of a gay ski week Whistler. In the mid-1990s, Altu anizers lnched a pk dot mpaign to show lol bs the enomic value of the gay ski week. Enomics were not enough to w over all of the crics, however, and Altu’s growth the early 1990s led to some homophobic reactns.

WHISTLER PRI AND GAY SKI WEEK

In 1994, homophobic flyers were distributed unr bs doors and on r wdows around Whistler durg the event. The flyers had the oppose effect than tend and rallied many rints and bs to publicly fend and monstrate their support for the ftival, cludg Mayor Ted Nebbelg, the first openly gay mayor Brish Columbia. This amendment led to lls to boytt the state and many people who had planned to attend Aspen’s gay ski week chose to attend Altu stead. Amendment 2 was later clared unnstutnal by the Supreme Court of the Uned Stat 1996, by which time Whistler’s gay ski week was tablished. Wh only twelve days to go before the ftival was set to beg, Sean Kearns (who owned the travel webse) reced Dean Nelson, Wayne Hartrick, Mark Clements-Kearns and Tatiana Kostiak to put together a stripped-down versn rebrand as GayWhistler Gay Ski Week.

10 GAY SKI WEEKS AND WTER PRI CELEBRATNS

Maybe those who may not be aware, gay ski weeks are annual gathergs of LGBT+ people, put together by a number of different anizatns—some by volunteer-led non-profs, others by for-prof party promoters—and held at var ski rorts around the world. Jonny BiermanI’m a lifelong skier, and lifelong homosexual, but until this year, I’ve always shied away om “gay travel” thgs. For me, beg gay and lovg skig always felt mutually somethg changed after the panmic.

A few of them were tenuoly nnected by workg for different offic of the same multatnal firm, but otherwise, they were all Whistler Pri iends—who met up once a year for gay ski week, perhaps saw each other passg throughout the year and perhaps did not, but otherwise planned on meetg up annually jt to enjoy a week of snow and astonished me how quickly I felt like a part of the group. We keeled over wh lghter, chased each other down the mounta, hurled snowballs, and did all sorts of gay stuff like talk about Real Hoewiv, share our g out stori, or talk about the tim we've had our hearts broken. Whistler Pri was a safe space where, y, most everyone was gay, but more importantly, we shared the mon tert of lovg wter sports.
