The first Pri march Perth was held 1989, anized by the Perth Gay Liberatn movement. The Gay Law Reform Group of WA joed an Internatnal Day of Prott on October 22. Protts were staged WA, Queensland and Tasmania on the anniversary of hundreds of arrts of gay people Salaman Place, Hobart.
After much bate, a reluctant ernment passed a bill to crimalise homosexualy – 18 vot to 15 – March of 1990, but wh highly a highly offensive preamble and age of nsent higher than for heterosexuals.

On October 22, a rally was held on the steps of Parliament Hoe to prott over laws discrimatg agast gay men Wtern Atralia and to persua Parliament that the Bill should be passed. ” The first iativ of SUSWA were to ntact other groups wh the lbian and gay muny wh the aim of settg up a WA Pri Collective and anisg a “Pri Month” October.
A meetg held on September 16, brought together 30 members of gay, lbian, bisexual and transsexual anisatns Perth to form the Pri Collective (WA).

The march had almost an equal number of gay men and lbians and was an ditn of the alnist approach and make-up of the Pri Collective. October 26, the Para was moved om day to night-time and thoands watched the 350 gay men, lbians and supporters who took to the streets. The media rponse was extremely posive, referrg to the Para as “Perth’s Gay Mardi Gras”.
After a seri of meetgs at the begng of 2993, a public meetg May, endorsed a nstutn for Pri and elected 12 people to the Lbian and Gay Pri Commtee. Fundg rounds for 1996 saw a total of $31, 000 returned to the lbian and gay muny the form of grants for a number of projects. The Pri Commtee dited the Para to a 21-year-old gay man, Matthew Shepard om Wyomg USA, who had been btally bashed and left for ad, passg away whg Pri month on October 12.
