In the spir of <a href=">LGBTQIA+ awarens</a>, <em>Allure</em> talked to three asexual people to mystify the orientatn and talk about what means to them to be ace.</p><h2><strong>A Married, Gray-Asexual on Her Inty</strong></h2><p>Meghan Cross knew she <a href=">wasn’t heterosexual</a> but uldn’t put her fger on a scriptn that sound right. Then June arrived, when some of Cross's iends were chattg about asexualy for <a href=">Pri Month</a>, and got her thkg. She started dog rearch onle, readg first-person acunts wrten by asexual people.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>At the time, Cross <a href=">thought asexualy</a> meant you hated sex. She had been wh her hband for eight years, married for three, and knew that didn’t scribe her. She and her hband had sex. "I was like, 'This mak so much sense. This is exactly what I am.'" Navigatg a healthy asexual-heterosexual relatnship reli on heavy munitn. "It’s jt munitg, listeng, unrstandg. Beg open to what your partner is sayg and be willg to adapt if you need to," she explas. It was helpful to explore how she felt sexually, but there were still some kks to work out when me to romantic attractn.</p><p>Cross says learng about romantic and sexual attractn — and how they operate separately — was when she started to put the puzzle piec together. She had thought she was bisexual until she learned about romantic attractn. "I enjoy that exists separately, that you n have a ep emotnal attractn to somebody that is void of sexual sire."</p><p>She explas romantic attractn as wantg to s on the uch holdg someone’s hand, vers wantg to engage sexual activy wh them. Cross also feels self-acceptance is key to a <a href=">healthy sexual inty</a>.</p><p>“The biggt thg for me is that you’re not broken. I spent so much time thkg that there was somethg wrong wh me bee all my iends were havg sex. I jt didn’t have an tert or sire,” she says. "You’re not broken, there’s nothg wrong wh you, and there are other people who feel exactly the same way that you do."</p><h2><strong>What It's Like to Be a Southern Ace</strong></h2><p>Lakayla Wilhe, a 21-year-old stunt Orlando, found out about asexualy high school the same way many <a href=">queer people fd their muni</a>: by g the Inter. They say back then, this was all new to them; they knew that you uld be straight or gay, but the word "asexual" simply wasn’t on their radar.</p><p>Their <a href=">sadns and prsn</a> fluctuated throughout their high school life. When they graduated, they wanted to be more open and let go of the grief of hidg their inty. They <a href=">me out as nonbary</a> and asexual, and dog so, found a muny.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>"I met some really great people out of high school and said, 'Listen, this is who I am. I don’t want to be sad anymore,'" they remember. For young adults, they say that fdg a GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) club and peers who will listen n help alleviate the prsure. "I enjoy the pany of the experienc I have wh people as they are. I thk ’s more for people that don’t intify as LGBTQ. It’s for them, ’s not for ." Their <a href=">platonic relatnships are extremely important</a> to them and pour happs to their life.</p><p>"My fay and I are a really tight-kn group. I’ve known my bt iend sce I was five; others sce middle school. We’re all really, really close,” they tell <em>Allure</em>. “There’s nothg this world I wouldn’t do for them."</p><h2><strong>An Asexual Man on His Platonic Relatnship</strong></h2><p>"It’s gog to happen eventually." That’s what Rob Peterson kept tellg himself as a teen. "Sooner or later, I’ll have a csh on someone. I’ll want to have sex. I’m jt too young right now." But never happened. Peterson realized this wasn’t an age issue; was about him as a person.</p><p>The Korean-German 26-year-old first heard the word "asexual" mentned a ma-for-TV documentary. He said the show was pretty awful the way that many ma-for-TV specials are, but somethg clicked. Tumblr, a monly ed space for the queer muny, solidified : He was asexual and aromantic.</p><p>Peterson thought he was ahead of the game when me to the mhy-ghy stuff. “I was really upset as to why people uldn’t see all this romantic stuff was fake; don’t exist," he says. "It’s all jt om the media. They’re buyg to Valente’s Day and jt <a href=">not cricizg enough</a>.”</p><asi aria-hidn="te" class="PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf jYbPsf"><div class="PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx iaCIKi"><p>"Asexual people n be very happy a relatnship, and asexual people n have sex."</p></div></asi><p>It took him a while to "get the memo," his words, and to unrstand that people actually do have romantic feelgs. He is now datg a <a href=">nonbary person</a> platonilly. "I re very eply about them. I still don’t have any romantic feelgs, but I like this person a lot," Peterson says.
