Southport Ave. Openg night will feature a screeng of “The Shy Shrimps Strike Back,” a follow-up to French directors Cédric Le Gallo and Maxime Govare’s edy that opened Reelg 2019.</p><p>The ftival will move Sept. 23-29 to Landmark’s Century Centre Cema, 2828 N. Clark St., before closg Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Chigo Filmmakers headquarters, 1326 W. Hollywood Ave.</p><p>“Ltle did I image 1981 that 40 years later, our ftival would still be gog strong,” said Brenda Webb, founr of Reelg and executive director of Chigo Filmmakers, the prentg anizatn.</p><p>This year’s ftival was anized wh Richard Knight, Jr., who has overseen the last 10 edns of Reelg. Before beg the featur programmer, Knight vered the ftival as a film cric; before that, Knight attend as a fan.</p><p>“It’s super excg that we’re still here, queer and watchg movi,” Knight said. “To reach this 40th anniversary tone unrsr the fact that we’ve e a long way, but we still have so far to go.”</p><p>Tickets and the full film lp and schle n be found on <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href=">Reelg’s webse</a>. </p><p>Tickets for most -person screengs at the Landmark Theater and Chigo Filmmakers are $12. Openg night tickets are $15 for the film and $40 for the film and s afterparty the Mic Box lounge and garn.</p><p>Other special admissn programs clu the $15 screeng of “Bros” at the Landmark and the closg night Dyke Delic program, which is $15 for jt the films and $30 to attend the afterparty.</p><p>Films will be screened virtually Sept. 30-Oct. 6 for $10 each or $125 for an all-accs pass.</p><p>This year’s ftival will feature 51 programs, cludg 37 feature-length films, a web seri and 13 short film programs, Knight said. The films e om 26 untri.</p><p>The ftival’s <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href=">openg night prentatn of “Shy Shrimps”</a> will be attend by one of the film’s directors, Knight said. He’s one of many directors, actors and other filmmakers who will vis Reelg for screengs, Q&As or panels, anizers said.</p><p>The film follows a rag-tag rabow water polo team om France that gets trapped a gay nversn mp Rsia while headg to the Tokyo Gay Gam. The feature uld not be filmed Rsia due to s homophobic laws, so was shot Ukrae jt before the war.</p><p>“Openg night will have the film, a s-down wh the director to talk about s makg bee there’s got to be some great stori there, and then an afterparty gala at the Mic Box,” Knight said.</p><p>This year will also mark the return of Dyke Delic, a lbian short film program curated by s founr, Sharon Zurek. Dyke Delic ran for several years at Chigo Filmmakers before Zurek left the nonprof, but she’s revivg the seri honor of Reelg’s 40th anniversary.</p><p>“Dyke Delic ually starts wh a social hour followed by a seri of fantastic lbian short films that Sharon programs,” Knight said. “It’s such a full-circle moment to have her back bee she was stmental raisg funds so Chigo Filmmakers uld buy the firehoe ris today.”</p><p>There will be four eratns of Dyke Delic throughout Reelg, cludg a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href=">fal screeng Oct. 2</a> that will close the ftival, Knight said.</p><p>The ftival’s centerpiece narrative feature is “<a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href=">Two Ey,</a>” screeng Sept. 29, which follows three ma characters different time perds: 19th century Montana, 1979 Barstow, California, and prent-day Wyomg.</p><p>“‘Two Ey’ has this really tenr gay love story and a betiful lbian love story,” Knight said. “It’s got transgenr and Native Amerin characters and touch on queer history, which I thk is important to do for our 40th anniversary — to show that we’ve always been here.”</p><p>The ftival’s centerpiece documentary is “<a rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank" href=">Jimmy Saigon,</a>” which shar filmmaker Peter McDowell’s personal journey to unver secrets related to his brother’s ath the Vietnam War.
