Three men sus were drkg red we and eatg pasta that st thirty-four dollars a servg. One of them was a hedge-fund manager, a famo short seller. Another was the fancial journalist Andrew Ross Sork. The third man, om London, was the actor Damian Lewis.</p><p class="paywall">Sork had ma the troductn. The hedge-fund manager and Lewis were dog most of the talkg. “Do your bs have a societal benef?” Lewis asked. He wanted to know what ma a hedge-fund manager more than “a paper shuffler.”</p><p class="paywall">The hedge-fund manager said that he and his peers basilly functn as market-based regulators—that they have a fancial centive to expose wrongdog. Sork had set up other dienc for Lewis wh fancial machers. One of them urged Lewis to nsir an unrperformg pany wh entrenched management or a sclerotic board: an activist vtor, even if he me and cut thgs and fired people—well, that’s palism.</p><p class="paywall">“What about your pensatn?” Lewis said, at the rtrant. “Do you serve ?”</p><p class="paywall">Lewis was preparg for his latt role. In “Billns,” which premièr on Showtime this week, he plays Bobby (Axe) Axelrod, a knockaround guy—Yonkers native, Hofstra grad—who scraps his way up om golf ddie to hedge-fund emence: library benefactor, wearer of shmere hoodi, keynote speaker at the Deliverg Alpha nference. He is the son of an surance broker (Lloyd’s) and the brother of an equi trar (Merrill Lynch). He went to Eton, where he rells srg up funds om “somebody’s rich uncle” to rent the school theatre—he and his troupe of iends, llg themselv the Chameleons, put on a productn of “The Long and the Short and the Tall.” As Sergeant Nicholas Brody, a Uned Stat mare and recently rcued prisoner of war, “Homeland,” he reportedly mand two hundred and fifty thoand dollars an episo. He is at ease the world of money, and fortable wh acknowledgg .</p><p class="paywall">As a preproductn exercise, tourg boardrooms wasn’t the sort of extravagantly crafty immersn program that prompts other actors to equent bootmakers’ ateliers and mental hospals. “I am Damian Lewis, not Daniel Day-Lewis,” he told me, wh a w as self-assured as was self-pretg. Rather, his approach was forensic. He wasn’t tryg to <em>be</em> a hedge-fund manager but to intify and analyze what distguished one. For the past six months, the hoe, which Lewis and his fay have lived for a , had been unr renovatn. “My wife and I have realized that basilly our tast meet at the tersectn of hotel lobbi and speakeasy bars,” Lewis had told me, New York. “We keep sayg, ‘Oh, sh, is our home gog to jt end up lookg like a night club Manhattan?’ ” McCrory was workg—filmg “Peaky Blrs” Liverpool. Tomorrow was movg day. “There’s no way I’m gog to get the tck down here,” Lewis said, squtg as he surveyed the length of the block. “It’s gog to be a disaster.”</p><p class="paywall">Totg his cleang suppli, he walked up a garn path to the hoe’s entrance.</p><p class="paywall">“This is our brand-new blue door, which I’m still not sure about,” he said. “I’m the guy who asks you to pat everythg twice.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">“So how many ats is that, Alex?” he lled, to a workman.</p><p class="paywall">“That’s three.”</p><p class="paywall">“I thk ’s gonna work, boys,” Lewis said, removg his sho to reveal a pair of gray socks wh red rerced to.</p><p class="paywall">He ran a fger over the glossy surface.</p><p class="paywall">“Groovy.”</p><p class="paywall">Lewis was home on a week’s break om “Billns”—the Amerins were celebratg Thanksgivg. He had to ll the ble pany, pick up the kids om school, go back to the hardware store for an extra door handle, as he’d need twelve and got only eleven—thgs that a famo actor would be a chump to do Los Angel but a wanker not to London. The fay moved to Los Angel once, when Lewis was dog “Life.” “It is an ferr cy to London,” Lewis told a reporter. They moved back after eighteen months.</p><p class="paywall">Lewis may be the world’s most famo actor who has never anchored a major film. When I asked him if he sticks to televisn tentnally, he said, “You shouldn’t thk for a send that I’ve somewhere or somehow ma a mment to only dog the premium-ble shows.” He ntued, “But there are other nsiratns, to do wh fay, which is hardly the answer of an artist, but ’s realy. ”</p><p class="paywall">Durg his tenure on “Homeland,” Lewis spent a cumulative five months of the year Charlotte, North Carola, where the show was filmed. He would sometim “cry tratn,” he said; on Halloween, he drsed up a sry clown stume and got on Skype wh his kids. Unually for a man—a man renowned for his portrayals of terse masculy—the dilemma of how to “have all” domat his nversatn. “I try hard to be a morn dad,” he told me. “I like not jt beg the figurehead of the fay— means that I want to take the kids to school, I want to pick them up, and I want to take them on their playdat and e home and do their homework wh them and unrstand actually tail what their homework is rather than havg relayed to me by my wife.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In London, dk was approachg.</p><p class="paywall">“Let’s have a wanr,” he said. “It’s such a pretty eveng.”</p><p class="paywall">As he strolled the siwalks—wavg to neighbors, potg out landmarks—he seemed to be subjectg himself to a sort of trial. “Why do one go away?” he said. “What is that driv you on? If you are stctively, or have been brought up or ted a way that you mand of yourself that you make the bt of your life and the bt of your opportuni, then there is a nstant nversatn gog on between fns of succs vers fns of happs. The two don’t always go together, and at what pot do you stop strivg so hard to be succsful the nventnal sense, bee every fibre your body has been ted to take your opportuni, vers arguably a more enlightened view, which is you don’t have to chase and go for the thgs?”</p><p class="paywall">When “Billns” me along, Lewis was almost annoyed—another TV show, another Showtime productn, another nflicted middle-class guy, another year (at least) of mutg across an ocean. At the height of the “Homeland” craze, Print Obama ved Lewis and McCrory to a state dner.
