We’d planned this phone ll as a chance to talk about the state of homophobia and transphobia mic, but our nversatn bounc around wildly — om Pri experienc (still very much on our bras) to the state of LGBTQ reprentatn the mic dtry to their own journey wh genr as well as their wdg path through the dtry. On one hand, my reer began before gay marriage was passed the U. In certa queer circl, and even certa circl that I felt were like whe gay power circl, I did feel a changg of the guard a posive way, where wrers and edors and people that pull some weight the media are now people of lor, are now trans or genr non-nformg people of lor, are now lbians.
But also Lil Nas X [appears to intify as] a cis male gay. And I know she’s experienced timidatn and homophobia, but at the same time I feel like she’s fely more accepted the hip-hop muny bee she still has the same kd of hyper-mascule braggadoc as a cis het male. Hip-hop has this reputatn for beg particularly homophobic, and people the dtry talk about as if ’s the genre that has been the slowt to embrace LGBTQ cln.
MYKKI BLAN ON MARRIAGE EQUALY: “THIS WILL DO MORE FOR GAYS AND LBIANS THAN PEOPLE THK”
Well, I would say that I disagree that hip-hop is more homophobic than pop. And while historilly hip-hop has been a very homophobic, transphobic and queerphobic mil genre, to say that hip-hop is more homophobic than pop or untry or R&B I thk is actually racist, bee mak so that the more historilly passable genr are not rponsible for the transgrsns that they have ma agast the queer, genr non-nformg and LGBTQ muny. It almost absolv them and imak hip-hop a spegoat, when general we’re talkg about an entire mic dtry that has long been very homophobic.
