Or, if you were lucky enough to be stuck there wh the <em>right</em> person, might sert-oasis purgatory fact be a kd of heaven? The film picks up after Samberg’s Nyl has re-lived the same hipstery Palm Sprgs weddg a ln tim, and right before he drags Crist Milti’s sister of the bri to his fely recurrg maral nightmare. Together, and wh more than a few Lonely Island-style hijks, they try to pe their time-loop. Along the way, they nsir the horror—or is joy?—of eternal habatn.</p><p>For better or worse, the circumstanc of quarante have led upl everywhere to nont a siar qutn: what happens to a relatnship when every day is the same? Samberg, joyfully boyish at 41 ballp and Stud Ghibli tee, opens the first of our two Zoom lls wh an admissn. “It's weird to be dog prs aga at all,” he says, “thkg about sayg anythg about the world other than COVID or the protts and everythg, and Gee Floyd.” This wasn’t an idle gripe. <em>Brooklyn Ne-Ne</em>, his s about an affable band of tectiv, had been pulled to the natnal bate around policg sparked by Floyd’s ath, as dienc and works alike began to rethk the mers of shows about benevolent ps. But Samberg had <em>Palm Sprgs</em> to promote, as both star and producer, and had brought himself around on the ia. “You know, the world was kd of fucked up before, and 's still fucked up, and we were dog prs before, and makg movi,” he says. “I'm gog through all the same stuff,” he’d realized, “and at night I want to watch stuff. So I gus puttg somethg out is okay.” What he’s puttg out has that newly relevant panmic layer, s echo of our endlsly repeatg days. And Samberg mak no secret of the fact that he’s plenty happy for this to be the recurrg day he’s stuck , and for the people he’s relivg wh to be his wife, the harpist and songwrer Joanna Newsom, and their young dghter.</p><p>Their days at home are placid. There’s a piano, mostly ed by Newsom. (Samberg’s repertoire reach s outer lim wh the two-note melody—<em>duh-duhduhduh-duhduhduh-duhduhduh-duh</em>—om Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.”) There are three harps, also mostly ed by Newsom: two for mom, one toddler-sized, a gift om Newsom’s preferred harpmaker. They opened shop 2017, and had somethg of a banner year last year, velopg two of 2019’s bt-loved TV edi <em>I Thk You Should Leave wh Tim Robson</em> and <em>PEN15</em>. “I never woke up any morng beg like, ‘I want to produce,’” he says. The pot was always wrg and tellg jok, preferably wh his bt iends. “But ’s started to bee somethg that's really ol. The moments where you get to allow people you rpect and admire and thk have ol new voic fulfill the thgs they want to do, 's really gratifyg. Jerry Sefeld had the quotidian gripe. Andy Samberg, to his ocsnal chagr, has the edy rap song. Pretty much the only job he ever wanted was <em>SNL, basilly</em> anized his life around gettg there. He transferred om UC Santa Cz to NYU’s film program, did standup for a while after llege, and suffered through what he scrib as a miserable dn for a sketch-edy theater, sce seemed like that was another viable path to Stud 8H. But the bs that really worked—on his way to <em>SNL</em>, as well as durg his time there—were the vios, many of them song-based, he ma wh his junr high bt buds Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Tacne. All three had grown up on a diet of goln-age hip hop, gettg to rap and reggae while attendg Berkeley High. And when they rned L.A. after llege, they regnized that, sce none of them uld sg, rappg uld be “a wonrful livery system for jok,” Samberg explas. Their relatnship to the form is plited: “There's strangely no one who dislik edy rap more than ,” he says now. “It jt happened to be somethg that we started dog as a joke, jt for ourselv, that people really enjoyed.”</p><p>The group honed s craft to a laser-sharp, transcenntly dumb pot, llg themselv The Lonely Island and postg vios onle. Those vios got them a gig wrg jok for Jimmy Fallon’s MTV Movie Awards hostg gig 2005, and on Fallon’s remendatn, the group sred <em>SNL</em> dns. Lorne Michaels was charmed, signg all three—Tacne and Schaefer joed the wrg staff, while Samberg was hired as a st member. <a href=">“Lazy Sunday,”</a> which saw Samberg and Chris Parnell vigoroly rappg about cupk and <em>The Chronicl of Narnia</em>, aired December 2005; that week, traffic to an upstart vio-hostg se lled YouTube jumped by more than 80 percent. The Lonely Island would go on to produce more than a hundred more shorts for the show. He was always better known for his pretaped shorts than for appearg live sketch. His <a href=">Nilas Cage imprsn</a> radiated an tensely appealg psychotic bliss.</p><p>To a gree, Samberg and his iends were jt dog what ma them lgh. And while Samberg’s goofy affect and floppy haircut uld give the imprsn that they weren’t thkg terribly hard about the procs, they were edy technicians. Real grrs. And beyond that, they were gnizant of how easily their work uld tip to iffy terrory. “To be blunt,” Samberg says, “beg a whe person makg edy raps is a dicey game. And we were aware of that om the start.” So they approached the genre om a place of love, staplg dick jok to -the-know allns to eper-cut rap and R&B. Perhaps more importantly, all their work adhered to one le: <em>We have to be the butt of all the jok.</em></p><p>And so Samberg’s characters, buffoons an ever-expandg universe of dipshtery, were always the punchle. They’d jizz their pants, and bang their iends’ moms, and brag about recent acts of terurse, never the wiser that the jok were on them. Over time, The Lonely Island’s body of work alced to somethg like a five se agast whe-bro masculy. This, too, me om experience. Growg up, he says, “the really aggro, macho dus were the on that we didn't really jive wh. You get olr and you realize a lot of that is learned and tght, and not necsarily the flt of a kid. But makg fun of is always funny to , makg fun of dus that are sexist and homophobic and all that.” (His thkg has evolved there, too: “The way that you make fun of that has evolved, even. Co-hostg the 2019 Goln Glob, Samberg smuggled a not-que-joke about Ryan Coogler’s <em>Black Panther</em> to his openg monologue. He <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">posed a qutn to the director</a>, all well-meang but tastrophilly ill-equipped whe guy: "Ryan, were there, like, a bunch of old members of the actual Black Panther Party sayg, 'I n't even get an dn?'” The mera cut to Coogler, who looked befuddled. Samberg, all one breath, quickly unrcut the premise: “Jt kiddg, they were all amed and murred for wantg jtice and equaly. The world is and always has been a nightmare; jt seems worse now bee of our phon."</p><p>“It's not even really a joke,” Samberg says when I ask him about . “The joke is, I'm jt sayg the ernment fucked over the Black Panthers. The joke is that I'm settg up by makg seem like 's gog to be a super tone af, wack joke.” He’d met Coogler a few tim, knew they were both om the Bay, was blown away by <em>Fvale Statn</em>, Coogler’s 2013 film about the police murr of Osr Grant, and need to wre some jok about <em>Black Panther</em>.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>It was ls a chance to get polil, he explas, than jt a good joke, and one he felt prepared to tell: “That's somethg that I know about for real, [that] I've read about and learned about,” he says. Also, killed at rehearsal: “I wanted to say bee when I did the read-through, everyone lghed and was like, ‘That's ol. That's a good thg to say.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah. It feels right.’” He was the butt of the joke. He also got the lgh.</p><hr/><p><strong>When Samberg and I speak</strong>, the prott movement sparked by Gee Floyd’s murr by Mneapolis police has entered s third month. Statu are beg torn down, universy buildgs renamed. For the first time maybe ever, the role of policg Amerin life seems up for bate. But the fate of shows <em>about</em> police is altogether cloudier. <em>Cops</em> and <em>Live PD</em> have been nceled, while <a href=">shows about so-lled “good ps” have e unr scty</a>. Thgs seem somehow trickier for a edy like Samberg’s <em>Brooklyn Ne-Ne</em>, which is thought to excsively sanize police. In our moment of crisis, <em>Ne-Ne</em>’s well-tentned approach seems perhaps not up to the moment.</p><p>Samberg is quick to acknowledge that realy. He’ll also note that “I jt don't feel really like I'm the person to make any grand statement about . Shownner Dan Goor and the st <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">donated $100,000 to the Natnal Bail Fund Network</a>.</p><p>Samberg has been thkg about the lims of the show’s effectivens, s power to do what set out to. “We've done, quote-unquote, ‘the bt we uld’ so far,” he says. “Could we have done more? Of urse. Anytime anyone's a posn where they're askg themselv, ‘Could I have done more?’ the answer is always y. It's about what the goals were, and for , the goal, maybe naively so, was more about lghs. We were makg a workplace edy and we tried to acknowledge the thgs about policg that were not ial along the way.” He knows they’ll have to do more.</p><p>It’s not an exce, but ’s worth notg that Samberg was a ltle hant about playg a p to beg wh. “I didn't grow up beg like, ‘Tst and love the ps,’” he says. But, he not quickly, “I also didn't grow up Black or Lato and have to actually be fucked wh.” Early on, he’d joke wh his stmat about how odd was, that this squad of profsnal funny people had wound up wearg prop guns prop holsters.</p><p>At first, was easy enough to skip past that ncern. His ntract had n out at <em>SNL</em>, and, feelg a ltle burnt out om producg his weekly shorts, he’d cled to renew . He didn’t have tert leadg a work s, necsarily, but he’d ma a personal le to do whatever Ta Fey and Amy Poehler did, and they’d both done that. “That has never steered me wrong. They are smart and good,” he says, lghg, aware of the unrstatement. He felt a particular kship wh Poehler, thanks to what he lls a shared “buoyancy our styl.” When the producers Mike Schur and Dan Goor me llg, he was ready to listen. They’d built <em>Parks and Recreatn</em> around Poehler, and though Samberg don’t watch much work TV, the nnectn helped: “<em>Parks and Rec</em> was a fantastic show and I loved , and my wife loved , and we watched , and I love Amy, and I love Mike Schur,” he says, all bubbly effivens. “And he and Dan Goor asked me if I wanted to do another one of those, basilly, and I was like, ‘Sh, I have to say y.’</p><p>The show was sweet, a strong ensemble buoyed by Samberg’s cheery clowng. He won a Goln Globe after the first season. He was goofg off, but he was growg, too. His <em>Ne-Ne</em> character Jake Peralta is a typilly joyful Samberg dg, a tective trated that his job don’t more closely remble Bce Willis’s <em>Die Hard</em>. The show’s ratgs wavered over the urse of s five seasons on Fox, but the dience did reta was voted enough to help fd new life—two seasons and untg—on NBC. That adoratn uld be creded part to the seri’ willgns to tackle, if awkwardly, the real-world issu that cut agast the <em>Ne-Ne</em> fantasy of kooky, kd-hearted ps. The whole project reprented a kd of liberal wishful thkg: “Wouldn't be amazg if there was a precct like the Ne-Ne, this re group of tectiv that has the moral pass you would wish for, and is tly diverse and reprents a lot of different people?”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>But the next episo of <em>Brooklyn Ne-Ne</em> will air a world transformed first by a panmic and then by a reckong over the role of policg Amerin life. Thgs will change: Terry Crews has said that the show’s wrers junked an ial n of four episos they’d already wrten, and ’s all but certa that the show will addrs our new moment. It’s gog to be hard, Samberg says, and though he’s wary of soundg fensive, he has a pot. This would have been smack the middle of Ferrell’s legendary n on <em>SNL</em>, and yet here was Ferrell, holdg the only job Samberg had ever wanted, explag that even <em>he</em> was wag for the whole adorg world to realize he was a d. The realizatn h hard. “Me at that age, readg that about him at that time, thkg he is maybe the funnit person to ever live, perd, [I] was like, ‘Oh fuck, there's no end.’ You're never on solid ground,” he tells me durg our send talk. That feelg, he explaed, never really went away—not when he got the <em>SNL</em> gig, not after he shot to fame on the show. And not now, eher, not really. “I'm more secure than I was,” he says. “But I don't tst .”</p><p>This echoed somethg he told me our ial terview. He’s worked hard, he said, to fd the work-life balance that beg a father and a hband requir; tradg the chaos of <em>SNL</em> for the work orr of <em>Ne-Ne</em> has helped. But no matter how full his lendar gets, he still stggl to turn down bucket-list gigs. “I'm not out of the mdset of, like, ‘Holy sh, I got asked to do blank. I have to do , or else I'll never get to do aga,’” he said. If he says no, well—what if he don’t get asked aga? Theoretilly, he’s been playg wh hoe money sce leavg his dream job 2012. But that don’t mean the hoe n’t change the l. “Somewhere I do genuely believe ,” he said. “If you don't take the opportuni when they're there, they'll go away.”</p><p>So 2019, Samberg shot the seventh season of <em>Brooklyn Ne-Ne</em>. He said y to -hostg the Goln Glob, and also to gog out on a Lonely Island ncert tour. He ma a sublimely weird <a href=">“visual poem” about Mark McGwire and Jose Canse</a> wh Akiva Schaffer, too, unr the logic that their most seemgly bird-braed ias (“Jack Sparrow,” notably) had an odd way of fdg enormo succs.</p><p>The <em>Palm Sprgs</em> shoot had to be crammed there, too, somewhere. He gets sent lots of potential scripts, but this was the rare one that checked all his box. The tone was there— uld benef, even, om a dose of Lonely Island chaos, and the kd of beefed-up romantic arc they’d learned matters while workg wh Judd Apatow on <em>Popstar</em>. It was the sort of genre-bendg movie he’d pay money to see, jt as a civilian. That felt good. Perhaps most importantly, he thought he uld actually do the part.</p><p>This was not an signifint nsiratn. “In the begng I was like, ‘I fely am not a good actor,’” he says, bluntly. He’d always felt a ltle weird about actg, generally, his Lonely Island antics a rebuttal to theater-kid talk-about-your-craft work. For reasons of budget (the shoot lasted three short weeks) and tax rebate (Palm Sprgs was played by scffy Los Angel suburbs), that plan was scrapped. But the traoff, he says—he’d make that aga a heartbeat. “The reason to make an die—to, like, eat sh on gettg paid money and havg a good schle and havg a good trailer and all of the chy movie ameni,” he says, “you forego that bee you're creatively exced about what you're dog. That was fely this.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>The film’s gotten great reviews so far, easily the bt of Samberg’s reer. There’s that huge sale number they sred at Sundance, too, and the producg work that’s geysered to the Lonely Island office, past the songwrer Babyface’s piano and onto Samberg’s sk, as a rult. (It’s Babyface’s old office.) The rona-affected release, of urse, means Samberg won’t have the chance to break his openg-weekend curse, and what be of <em>Brooklyn Ne-Ne</em> remas a thorny problem yet to be solved. Challeng, sure, but also not more than that.</p><p>The whole thg remd me of the way he scribed the appeal of <em>Palm Sprgs</em>'s script. “It was well-wrten, and mixed wh real edy. Which, for me, is how life feels," he'd said. “It's miserable and terrifyg and wonrful and betiful.” He chuckled.
