So when Ball heard that her iend Merv Griff was lookg to revive his ncelled quiz show, “Jeopardy!,” she remend that Griff hire Trebek as the program’s new host. In September, 1984, Trebek hosted his first episo of “Jeopardy!,” and, sometime around Christmas, his last will be aired. After a year-and-a-half-long battle wh pancreatic ncer, he died on Sunday, at the age of eighty, Los Angel.</p><p class="paywall">For more than thirty years, Trebek prid over the blue game room. His sus were starched and his eyebrow was arched; his prence alone ma nttants and dienc stctively straighten. Like Art Flemg, the origal host of “Jeopardy!,” Trebek need to project moral fortu. Trebek’s chic profsorial meanor—the glass tipped down the nose, jt so; a mop of brown hair that, later years, beme a trimmed flash of whe—telegraphed to viewers that <em>this</em> game was fair. One of the hallmarks of the show is s nsistency. The game has always followed a strict pattern: Jeopardy!, Double Jeopardy! (worth twice as much), and the Fal Jeopardy qutn. But there is also a sort of drama that transpir each time. Conttants race to prs their handheld signallg vic, and whoever is first offers her answer, while lookg to Trebek—all the way over there, at his lectern—for his reactn. One objective is to get the answer rrect. Another is to please Alex Trebek.</p><p class="paywall">It’s easy to fet to appreciate the eak ubiquy of “Jeopardy!” One of the most popular, longt-nng televisn shows of all time is a trivia gantlet that, by sign, sts bookish obssiv. (Some of the most mon profsns among the show’s nttants are attorney, software engeer, graduate stunt, and stay-at-home mom.) It’s a miracle that the show is so excg to watch. This is due almost entirely to Trebek. As a host, his mand was warm but curt. He was not an m.c.—Johnny Gilbert, his voice-of-god announcer, brought the vtigial showmanship—not a “personaly.” He never changed his meanor, even as the landspe of game-show televisn tipped, over the years, toward the loud and the rnivalque (“Fay Fd,” “Who Wants to Be a Millnaire?”). Trebek took the game serly, givg permissn to, whout embarrassment, fd pri procurg, while yellg on the uch, our ltle trkets, our factoids. No matter how by you were, you uld always afford the half hour; was dnertime, anyway.</p><p class="paywall">Gee Alexanr Trebek was born the mg town of Sudbury, Ontar, 1940. His father was an immigrant om Ukrae, and his mother was French-Canadian. Between the two of them, they spoke English, French, Ukraian, Polish, and Rsian. (“It was like a mi Uned Natns,” Trebek said, 2011, durg a speech at the Ukraian Cultural Center, L.A.) In his early twenti, while attendg the Universy of Ottawa and need of money to fish out his gree, Trebek took a job at the Canadian Broadstg Corporatn, as an announcer for rad segments. He hosted more than a dozen short-lived game shows—at one pot, he was hostg three at the same time. He projected a suavens and m that uld be excgly ngo wh the over-all vibe of a show like “The New Battltars” or “Double Dare.” And, ocsnally, he would venture to the realm of news, takg on the role of the handsome everyman broadster.
