There is a steely Thatchere streak Young (he se no ntradictn his mment to chary work that addrs the equali his own party’s stery polici exacerbated over the past ), somethg many of the younger red wall MPs share, while they also follow the wake of the social liberalisatn of the Conservativ unr David Cameron. The former prime mister regnised that his si need to accept society had moved on and Young is the beneficiary that he n be an openly gay Tory MP and be planng his marriage, thanks to a law his own party troduced 2013. The panmic, of urse, has ma his engagement rather more prolonged than was origally hoped.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="pkpw9"></div></div><p><strong>GQ: How and why did you get to ontle polics?</strong></p><p><strong>Jab Young:</strong> It was the n up to the 2010 electn. I was llege at the time and there was a real buzz about the fact the ernment uld change for the first time que a while. So I started gettg to polics then. My gran took me along to a htgs meetg for the Labour MP for Middlbrough, Stuart Bell, which was the seat I grew up . He didn't turn up and I remember stg the dience beg so angry that he uldn't even be bothered. And this was a guy who had been the MP for 30-odd years. And so, at that moment, I thought, “I’m gog to polics bee I want to get rid of him.” Then I read through all the different maniftos and the Conservative Party was the I was most drawn to. I got volved om there and started mpaigng. It was durg the mpaign for the Middlbrough by-electn 2012 [after Bell's ath] when I cid to stand for parliament. And then I stood 2015 Redr, where I me fourth, which wasn't great. I stood for uncil 2017, then aga the general electn 2017 and then had the opportuny to stand aga 2019, and I'm jt so pleased that I'm here bee was always one of those thgs where you dream of reprentg the area that you grew up , where I went to llege and did my apprentichip. But, also, we set up a centre for a chary lled Christians Agast Poverty. And the two approach were very different. The food bank was crisis food and would give fai food when they need that stant, whereas Christians Agast Poverty was more about teachg people how to budget g the money that they had and how to pay back some of their bt over an extend perd of time. That's why I feel much more fortable. By puttg people a box there's an element of whether that's discrimatn – you're almost dog the very thg that you were attemptg not to do. Jt bee people look this way or sound this way, or jt bee they fancy the typ of people, don't mean that they should nform to any pre-existg standard.</p><p><strong>Do you thk that approach is a polil strategy?</strong></p><p>I don't thk 's a strategy. At the end of the day, we're Conservativ and so actually keepg the stat quo is, to some extent, our mantra. And that means not rpondg to chang culture jt bee they are fashnable. But we should rpond when ’s the right thg to do. You weren’t gog to solve somethg like same-sex marriage overnight.</p><p><strong>What LGBT+ issu do you particularly re about?</strong></p><p>One of the issu that I really champn sce g to parliament is tryg to get nversn therapy outlawed the UK. It's a very difficult issue, bee at what pot is the state terferg wh people's parental relatnships or relign and thgs like that? But I want to see people go to prison if they try to nvce a gay person that what they're dog is wrong. In some ways, I speak om my own experience the fact that I'm a gay Christian. And that's what's led me to be que passnate about fightg nversn therapy.</p><p><strong>Did you experience any discrimatn yourself when you were mpaigng?</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Not really. I have experienced my life and I’ve had the odd ment. But I don't really wear on my sleeve. I’m engaged to a man and I wouldn't be shoutg about if I was engaged to a woman. This is my life pennt of my role as an MP and so I jt get on wh . Whereas, if I was postg about every day and thgs like that, I probably might end up gettg a few more ments.</p><p><strong>Have you had any thoughts about the historic attus of some Conservativ towards same-sex relatnships? For example, Sectn 28?</strong></p><p>I thk has left a legacy and specifilly for olr LGBT people. It's not really a memory for me, but for all the olr LGBT people ’s still is an issue, but I thk there's an element of that was of that time and attus have changed massively. I remember the 2016 US printial electn and all the clips surfaced of Hillary Clton sayg marriage was for a man and a woman and thgs like that. And yet no one today would argue that Hillary Clton isn't a progrsive polician. I know the areas that I'm mpaigng and I would go and knock on those doors and hear them say, “We’re backg Boris and we're backg the Conservativ” and was md-bogglg, bee I've knocked on the doors before and I know the rponse that I've had. It was a strange feelg. Everyone was really hant about whether or not you uld actually believe what was happeng bee of what happened 2017, when we ially started door knockg and was posive. And this uld change aga, but for areas like South Bank, which is one of the poort areas the untry, to put their fah me was a really humblg experience. I don’t thk my precsor, Anna Turley, had that attu. If I was to put myself her sho, the biggt issue on the doorstep was Brex and she had gone agast the wish of her nstuents on that. So that was her difficulty.</p><p><strong>Are you nsc of yourself as a kd of new face of the party, someone that the party would want to promote?</strong></p><p>Well, no, not particularly. I’m here to work for my nstuents. And que often people put this thg ont of you and say, “You’re probably jt a one-term MP” and thgs like that. But I thk that's the wrong way to look at , bee don't matter whether you're gog to be here for four years or 40 years, you're here to work for the people that put you there, however long that perd of time may be. I don't foree myself beg a mister by the next electn bee I've got a seat to work hard for.</p><p><strong>People are obssed wh what an extraordary year 2020 was, but what was like for you as a new MP?</strong></p><p>I remember back March, I was I was jt gettg faiar wh how to read the orr paper properly and all the protol and then obvly all of that changed. It's been que difficult to adapt to that. You're polics bee you want to speak to people and not beg able to do face-to-face or even walk down the high street is difficult. You’re not gettg the same nnectn that you would have wh people.</p><p><strong>What are your terts policy-wise?</strong></p><p>I'm terted our energy policy and future energy secury. I'm chair of the Hydrogen All Party Parliamentary Group. I'm also chair of the Chemil Indtry at APPG. Havg worked that dtry, the are the thgs I'm bothered about. A year ago no one else was really terted , but this last year is jt, well, explod – that's probably a bad word to e! The tert hydrogen has jt massively evolved. This is partly due to the panmic, bee we've faced this forced recsn and we have to thk about what we want our revery to look like. Some of the thgs that would have been nsired another five or ten years we've been able to brg forward. We were gog to produce five gigawatts of hydrogen by the year 2030. So that's a massive amount, nsirg that's what Germany is planng on producg by 2030. To be that posn is amazg. I'm phg for to nsir hydrogen the gas works. So there’ gog to be a trial Leeds and Tesi about triallg 100 per cent hydrogen a gas work. When you nsir that somethg like 85 per cent of all hom the UK are on the gas work, beg able to swch those to hydrogen works, rather than natural gas, means that we n drastilly cut our rbon emissns
