GUY AND LOMPER GAY?
* full monty gay *
A much later addn, 2014’s Pri, was based on the te story of gay and lbian activists who aligned themselv wh Brish mers durg their 1984–1985 strike, a powerful aln that ultimately built support for LGBTQ+ rights among the untry’s workg class and Labour Party.
THE VOICE OF CHICAGO'S GAY, LESBIAN, BI, TRANS AND QUEER COMMUNITY SINCE 1985
Other films, like Billy Ellt (2000), touched on queer them ls directly via issu around masculy and genr expectatns workg class muni, while featurg gay supportg characters. The film is sentially about a group of men dog somethg that they nsir to be pretty gay.
LETTERS SHOW MONTY AS 'REPRSED GAY'
They’re sort of the verse of the scene another queer 1997 film, In & Out, which Kev Kle’s gay character attempts to move like a straight man, stiffeng his walk and ristg the urge to dance exuberantly.
Given the revelatn of his sexualy later the film, ’s reasonable to wonr whether shame and ternalized homophobia played a role Lomper’s suici attempt. They experience no blowback or homophobia that we’re shown.
THE FULL MONTY'S STEVE HUISON SHAR TOUCHG FAN RPONSE TO THE ANCHISE'S GAY REPRENTATN
While I thk ’s safe to assume that men gettg their k off is part of The Full Monty’s appeal for gay dienc, there is somethg fundamentally not-gay about the film’s approach to pictg the male body—and ’s not jt the fact that looks away when the characters fally liver on the film’s tle.
It lacks the gay gaze. Of urse, homoeroticism isn’t the only barometer by which a film’s queerns should be judged.
But a film about male strippers, the absence of the gay gaze is signifint. 5 or 2: certaly not exclively heterosexual, but also, not that gay, really.
