been tryg for him—he ntracted <em class="small">COVID</em>-19 January but was asymptomatic— has been far more so for people who fall to neher tegory. But om there he tours to an extend seri of jok about the L.G.B.T.Q. muny—he refers to beg trans as the genr equivalent of wearg blackface—which have mired the special ntroversy.</p><p class="paywall">For two weeks after s release, on October 5th, “The Closer” was among the ten most viewed programs on Netflix—but was also met wh outrage. Jaclyn Moore, the shownner for the Netflix seri “Dear Whe People,” who is whe and trans, nounced “The Closer” and pledged not to work wh Netflix the future. (This led to a social-media backlash om people askg why “Dear Whe People,” a show about Black perspectiv on whe racism, had a whe shownner to beg wh.) B. Pagels-Mor, a Black trans nonbary Netflix employee who was helpg anize a workplace walkout to prott “The Closer,” was fired for allegedly leakg ternal documents about the special to the prs. (Pagels-Mor nied leakg the material.) The walkout took place on October 20th.</p><p class="paywall">Meanwhile, rponse to allegatns that Chappelle’s ments “The Closer” might lead to vlence agast trans people, Ted Sarandos, a Netflix -C.E.O., a memo sent to employe, fend the special and ced other more L.G.B.T.Q.-posive ntent on the platform, such as the edian Hannah Gadsby’s two specials. Gadsby rpond by nouncg Netflix, wh poetic enomy, as an “amoral algorhm cult.” Sarandos also noted the pany’s “strong belief that ntent on screen don’t directly translate to real-world harm.” This was a cur posn, and, on Wednday, Sarandos felt pelled to nce that, fact, “ntent on-screen n have an impact the real world, posive and negative.” Comedy is powerful precisely bee riffs on and ridicul mor and habs. Years later, he explaed that he’d been nflicted about the effect of his brand of racial humor, which relied heavily on enactg stereotyp orr to ridicule them. He had begun to wonr whether his dience got the send, more subtle layer of his work, or whether was entertaed purely by the stereotyp. Some crics said that the prsure and the expectatns that me wh the ntract and the succs of the show’s prev seasons had been so tense that the edian jt cid that he wanted out. But Chappelle, as he told David Letterman, was attuned to nuanc his work that would have been more nvenient (and more lucrative) to ignore.
