I’m very aware of this legacy that the characters have, and how meangful Glen and Glenda are to horror fans and the trans muny and the people who f both of those tegori. I knew that I had big sho to fill — or ty sho to fill up, rather. (Ha ha, thank you very much.) </p><p>But I’ve been really tryg to foc on this new eratn of Glen and Glenda as their own characters, their own people. Wh Don’s help, I wanted them to feel like real people. The irony of them beg dolls to play there. But I wanted to highlight the fact that they’ve had all of the lived experienc sce we saw them last to add that level of trigue. And jt fills you wh this feelg of beg a part of somethg.”</p></div></asi><p><strong>What was like actg wh yourself?</strong></p><p>Wackadoodle. Unlike anythg I’ve ever done before. Nothg you uld ever do as an actor uld possibly tra you for this. I really jt had to jump headfirst, and tst myself, my rearch, and my passn to rry me through. Luckily, that’s exactly what happened.</p><p>There was a lot of technology behd that I didn’t expect at all. I knew that there would have to be some level of visual effects to make the twng shots happen. But I didn’t realize the sheer magnu of how much go to planng for those scen, and how many people there are nng this one specific mache. I thk the phrase is “ tak a village to raise a child,” but kd of felt like “ took the entire town to raise the two tws” bee was such a massive hands-on effort. All the gears have to be oiled, everythg has to be nng perfectly smooth to make sure all together. As an actor, there’s a lot of prsure to get exactly right nsistently.</p><p>The way that worked was, for whichever shots both Glen and Glenda were gog to be , they would set the mera, and they would shoot as Glenda. And then no one would touch that mera. And then I would leave for an hour and a half, put a wig on, change the stume, and e back. Then I would rerd an empty room wh a microphone and a speaker my ear repeatg my own l that I jt rerd back to me. When you’re that environment the timg has to be perfect. So that was a big learng curve. Havg been an out nonbary person livg pretty much ee of those terms for the last four or five years of my life, that was jarrg. I kept phg harr beg like, “What do you mean? What do you actually want? What do you mean by feme? Do you mean softer? Do you mean more nfint? Do you mean smoother? There are so many different ways to be mascule or feme. That’s not enough for me. I need more guidance.”</p><p>So we would have the disagreements stume ftgs, or on shootg days where we’re blockg. And at one pot early on, I was like, “Okay, guys, I figured this is the problem. We n’t e the [terms]. This wordage’s outdated and don’t help anybody. We have to figure out ways to shift the language to f who the characters are.” Bee both Glen and Glenda have both the mascule and the feme, and that was very purposeful by me. And Don and I wanted Glen and Glenda to not be one or the other. We wanted them to be their unique mix, like people are, and like trans people are. It kd of found s humor, and found s place by takg self too serly. It ma s legacy on beg this queer, mpy, anythg-go environment. And so fally, I was able to jt bt ee and have fun si horror. I thk that is somethg that bleeds through on screen bee you watch and you feel like you’re on this huge si joke. And I was able to brg that out wh Glen and Glenda not only by lerally havg a very dramatic, very trans stume change the middle of the day, every sgle day.
