He is classilly betiful, but this is not the pose of a classil nu. His posture is cmpled, his dick flaccid, suggtg that somethg has gone awry. Jt behd him is a water-oler jug full of loose change and bills; there’s also a blurred figure, reflected the mirror, who appears to be naked as well. It is an unyieldg image, teemg wh mystery and w. So, too, is “Our Last Blunt Together,” which may be, as the tle suggts, the story of a breakup. In the picture, the feelg of pture is tensified by form. A hand, reachg up om the bottom of the ame—prumably belongg to the photographer—holds a blunt to the lips of a man reclg bed. The man is gazg out forlornly, but ’s hard to read his exprsn, as his face is partly obscured by the hand. Wh the imag, which are simultaneoly cryptic and exposg, Kg plit the ncept of visibily for Black gay men. The image is startlg. There is no body at all—only the ridue of one. It is a mimalist shot of a bed, gray sheets wrkled and drenched wh some fluid. I later learned that the photograph is an oblique self-portra. Kg was born 1993, Tucson, Arizona, the Sonoran Dert, an environment that mt have tght him the physics of heat and light. Shortly after high school, he moved up north, to Portland, Oregon, where he began to explore his sexualy and his tert photography. (He is an todidact, havg honed his photography practice outsi of the art-school system.) In 2017, Kg was diagnosed wh H.I.V. “Night Sweats” ptur the photographer’s early days of livg wh his illns. His self-portras tend to be off-kilter—“Orange Peel and Biktarvy,” a follow-up to “Night Sweats,” is a sp on the u still-life, featurg his meditn—but Kg is nohels an overtly personal photographer. The men the pictur are his iends, his past lovers.
