They had an apartment plex this one area, and there were all the l. And the church wasn’t like, “Hey, e jo our cult”—they jt ma them feel like part of a muny, beckoned them wh this warmth and acceptance. I remember stayg wh all kds of characters for a while, all around the Midwt. We stayed Coon Rapids [Mnota] a ty apartment wh this Rsian fay: two parents and their five ltle kids, then three of kids and my parents a two bedroom. We stayed wh the two women who were livg this Amish liftyle, so my sister and I had to wear drs and srv around our heads. I remember when my dad said we uld wear pants—I was so stoked bee I was a tomboy. It was like this pendulum that had swung all the way to one si wh beg reprsed and pent up, so jt had to go to the other. My parents beme very open, and was a trmatic shift. We went om not celebratg any holidays to havg our first Christmas and Halloween when I was 8 or 9.</p><p>At that pot my parents bought a hoe [ the Mneapolis suburbs], but right before we bought the hoe, my dad was like, “We’re sellg everythg and movg to a b, this is what God is tellg to do.” So, we sold all of . And then, sure enough, that wasn’t what we were supposed to do. That’s somethg I’ve always tend to do. I’m the olst of three and I still do . It was like, “The pile of thgs I got to do stacks up to the sun. I'm angry at the world. I jt want this feelg to be gone. I'm not sure that I n take anymore.” Then the chos was like, “That's jt the way life is sometim.” My first few songs were about that—always thkg about life om outsi of . A lot of my perspective had to do wh my dad bee he was always havg philosophil discsns wh me, askg qutns and enuragg me to ask qutns.</p><p>He’s a songwrer and he would spend so many nights gettg the tranc on the guar or piano where he wouldn’t want to stop. That medatn—where the most important thg was followg the path of spiratn and gettg everythg you n before disappears—really seeped to me. He would always talk about the me and how will vis you if you put your soul a certa state. On some level he was nscly givg me this tool for healg, but I’m not sure if he realized that would bee my ma form of survival.</p><p>When I was ltle, he tght me everythg he knew—basic chords but also chords and melodi that aren’t typil to learn your first stag of playg guar. He also had this way of regnizg his own shortgs and brgg teachers. My sister, brother, and I all took voice lsons, and we all practiced karate. He always wanted me to be pennt and fearls. He tght me the tools to never be alone any place, how to read people tuively. When I was 12, he would put me on a b to Mneapolis, and I would transfer St. Pl and take another b to go hang out wh this mician and stay-at-home dad, who would show me rerds and work on songwrg wh me. My dad would also take me to open mic nights, and I would play bars when I was 12.</p><p>My dad was basilly my manager om ag 13 to 16. I was on this tra towards beg a child pop star. Not that I would have necsarily bee a star, but that was the goal. It wasn’t my goal, though, which I learned after makg a uple rerds wh producers and profsnal adult micians. I jt didn’t know what my visn was at 13. Look at anybody’s work that they did between 12 and 20: You n see yourself growg up. It was like if you took a kid’s art project and put thoands of dollars behd and said, “This is solidified.” It was tratg for anyone who was part of . I didn’t have a label or anythg. My dad’s super rourceful and a really passnate speaker. He would jt prent my mic and get people who believed on board, so there were a handful of people who fund the two albums I did between 13 and 16. hoe. I went to school through eighth gra, but I had a really hard time school socially. My dad agreed to set me up wh two tutors [stead of high school], and I met wh them a uple tim a week to study for my GED. I got my GED when I was 16, and I was jt dog mic full time. But there was a turng pot around then where thgs got really tough wh my dad.</p><p>I left and stayed wh a iend. I cut my hair. It was the first time that I asserted myself as an dividual and cid to remove myself om the suatn. And then I began workg wh this guy <a href=">Jeff Anl</a>, who took me unr his wg and remd me that nothg’s at stake. I was so strsed. I’d had people who’d vted my mic and been ma aware of that prsure nstantly, even though I didn’t really like the mic that much. That’s right when I started gettg to Elltt Smh and Iron & We, and I wanted to move to a more stripped-down sound. I also wanted to go to school aga and be around peers.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I heard about this five-week summer program at Berklee [School of Mic] and went on a scholarship when I was 17. It’s an expensive school and we didn’t have the money, so I had this crazy motivatn when I went for the summer program. I ma an appotment wh the Dean of Admissns and went up there wh my guar to play him a song. I told him that I didn’t know mic theory but that I wanted to go there. And he felt somethg om the song.</p><p>After I went home, I got a ll om him that San Teschi [of the Teschi Tcks Band] was dog a seri of ncerts to raise money for one stunt to get a full ri to Berklee. I end up gettg , gog to Berklee, and beg one of like two girls the guar partment while I was there. There was this nng joke around school that if you were a girl, people would jt ask you all the time, “So you’re here for vols, yeah?” So was super ol to be supported by this shreddg female guar badass. Not to foc on her genr, but was jt really enuragg to see a woman dog somethg that you mostly see guys dog. Technilly we had already played a show together Boston, so we regnized each other but weren’t sure om where. I didn’t know anyone the cy, and he was like, “Well, I’ve been here for a ltle while, I ri my bike everywhere, I n show you how to get around the cy.” We jt explored, and eventually we started to play songs together. We cid to buy that whe nversn van and go on tour, jt make that our whole liv. We didn’t make a band jt to make a band—we waed for the right people to e. That is how they rehearse, and how they have rerd all of their albums: eye to eye and practilly elbow to elbow. Even when they perform, they <a href=">face each other</a> <a href=">as much as possible</a>. Much has been said of Big Thief as a fay, an anism, a self-stag <a href=">esystem</a>. But what happens when the circle narrows to a sgle pot? On the two-part <em>songs</em> and <em>stmentals</em>—billed as a pair of standalone albums but really two extrible parts of a whole—<a href=">Adrianne Lenker</a>, the group’s sger and emotnal fulcm, stands alone, a solary figure learng to shoulr a burn of h absence. Here, si a “circle of pe and red oak/Circle of moss and fire smoke,” she strips her mic down to jt an atic guar and voice wh mimal overdubs, all rerd straight to tape. She wrote ne of the first half’s 11 songs right there on the spot. The send half is purely stmental; the fal si is mostly wdchim.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><cm-un></cm-un><p>Lenker ma the rerd a one-room b the woods of Wtern Massachetts where she holed up sprg, wag out the early days of the panmic and reelg om a broken heart. The simple pewood planks of the shack’s terr remd her, she said, of “the si of an atic guar,” which is to say felt like home. Her iend Philip Werobe, a rerdg engeer, was summoned wh a tckload of gear: half-ch tape mach, XLR bl, a bral mic. They spent a uple weeks settg up and another three weeks rerdg, and the sense of prence they ptured— two s, rerdg directly to Werobe’s Walkman—is almost overwhelmg. The guar sounds so close that you n hear the ridg of Lenker’s fgertips bbg agast iled steel. Ocsnally, her chair creaks or her foot bsh agast the floor. Some songs wear a halo of birdsong or rafall. Fragments om the ssns—orphaned chords stmmed the silence before a take begs, the <em>thunk</em> of what might be fgers prsg down on the keys of the tape mache—lter the fal mixdown like leav strewn across the b floor.</p><p>Given s most origs, this album uld have been jt a tour. (“I really admire <a href=">Joni Mchell</a>, <a href=">Neil Young</a>, <a href=">Leonard Cohen</a>—how they have such a breadth of material throughout the years, to old age,” Lenker told <a href="><em>The Rger</em></a> last year. “They seemed to follow their own thread of cursy and creativy, even through some weird phas when people were like, ‘I don’t know what they’re dog.’”) Instead, sounds like the sence of her mic distilled, steeped grief. In addn to the pa of Lenker’s own breakup, Werobe’s grandmother was dyg; he was sayg his farewells to her over Zoom. Big Thief’s tour had been cut short by the panmic. And no matter how far you went to the woods, there was no ignorg the ambient ache the natn’s bon, all that ath and neglect and malevolence. She begs the album wh a plea: “Lay me down so to let you leave/Tell me li/Wanna see your ey/Is a crime to say I still need you?” This naked send-person form of addrs is all over the songs, like “I’m not aaid of you now” and “You are changg me/You are changg.” They sound like private thoughts tted on the tongue, the sorts of solary matns shared wh the four walls of an empty space—the room tone of loss. It is an vatn to move <em>through</em> pa, to disappear to sound alongsi her.</p><native-ad posn="-ntent" shouldDisplayLabel="te"></native-ad><p>Some of the songs are as lovely as any Lenker has ever wrten: lh and verdant, chords fanng out like ferns, their major-key tonali at odds wh the heartbreak at the album’s re. On “anythg,” she tras the smic sweep of <a href="><em>U.F.O.F.</em></a> for the microspic tail of a moment of stillns: “I wanna listen to the sound of you blkg.” The wounds of her breakup are still raw, peppered wh the buckshot of memory. She sketch the arc of a doomed affair a seri of disnnected imag: wet sk and drippg mango, a Christmas Eve argument, dog’s teeth bg through flh, “unchecked lls and msag.” But the chos is sweet and unburned, and toward the song’s end, Lenker lets out a soft ltle “Whoo!” as though rried away by the mic. It’s a remarkable moment: In the midst of an unshakable sadns, the bety of this thg she has created elics a whoop of joy, a ty fist pump of affirmatn. Imag drift across the listener’s visn, unmoored om their origs, until she arriv at the chos: “Standg the yard/Drsed like a kid/The hoe is whe and/The lawn is ad the lawn is ad the lawn is ad.” The sg-song melody and repeated words sound almost like a playground chant; the way she sgs, “The lawn is ad”—her voice multiplied on the tape, harmoni ripplg like cirs clouds above the broad, flat Midwtern landspe— sounds almost ecstatic.</p><p>Unlike the A-si, the B-si is void of overdubs, givg the songs a more timate, stripped-down character.
