They had an apartment plex this one area, and there were all the l. And the church wasn’t like, “Hey, e jo our cult”—they jt ma them feel like part of a muny, beckoned them wh this warmth and acceptance. I remember stayg wh all kds of characters for a while, all around the Midwt. We stayed Coon Rapids [Mnota] a ty apartment wh this Rsian fay: two parents and their five ltle kids, then three of kids and my parents a two bedroom. We stayed wh the two women who were livg this Amish liftyle, so my sister and I had to wear drs and srv around our heads. I remember when my dad said we uld wear pants—I was so stoked bee I was a tomboy. It was like this pendulum that had swung all the way to one si wh beg reprsed and pent up, so jt had to go to the other. My parents beme very open, and was a trmatic shift. We went om not celebratg any holidays to havg our first Christmas and Halloween when I was 8 or 9.</p><p>At that pot my parents bought a hoe [ the Mneapolis suburbs], but right before we bought the hoe, my dad was like, “We’re sellg everythg and movg to a b, this is what God is tellg to do.” So, we sold all of . And then, sure enough, that wasn’t what we were supposed to do. That’s somethg I’ve always tend to do. I’m the olst of three and I still do . It was like, “The pile of thgs I got to do stacks up to the sun. I'm angry at the world. I jt want this feelg to be gone. I'm not sure that I n take anymore.” Then the chos was like, “That's jt the way life is sometim.” My first few songs were about that—always thkg about life om outsi of . A lot of my perspective had to do wh my dad bee he was always havg philosophil discsns wh me, askg qutns and enuragg me to ask qutns.</p><p>He’s a songwrer and he would spend so many nights gettg the tranc on the guar or piano where he wouldn’t want to stop. That medatn—where the most important thg was followg the path of spiratn and gettg everythg you n before disappears—really seeped to me. He would always talk about the me and how will vis you if you put your soul a certa state. On some level he was nscly givg me this tool for healg, but I’m not sure if he realized that would bee my ma form of survival.</p><p>When I was ltle, he tght me everythg he knew—basic chords but also chords and melodi that aren’t typil to learn your first stag of playg guar. He also had this way of regnizg his own shortgs and brgg teachers. My sister, brother, and I all took voice lsons, and we all practiced karate. He always wanted me to be pennt and fearls. He tght me the tools to never be alone any place, how to read people tuively. When I was 12, he would put me on a b to Mneapolis, and I would transfer St. Pl and take another b to go hang out wh this mician and stay-at-home dad, who would show me rerds and work on songwrg wh me. My dad would also take me to open mic nights, and I would play bars when I was 12.</p><p>My dad was basilly my manager om ag 13 to 16. I was on this tra towards beg a child pop star. Not that I would have necsarily bee a star, but that was the goal. It wasn’t my goal, though, which I learned after makg a uple rerds wh producers and profsnal adult micians. I jt didn’t know what my visn was at 13. Look at anybody’s work that they did between 12 and 20: You n see yourself growg up. It was like if you took a kid’s art project and put thoands of dollars behd and said, “This is solidified.” It was tratg for anyone who was part of . I didn’t have a label or anythg. My dad’s super rourceful and a really passnate speaker. He would jt prent my mic and get people who believed on board, so there were a handful of people who fund the two albums I did between 13 and 16. hoe. I went to school through eighth gra, but I had a really hard time school socially. My dad agreed to set me up wh two tutors [stead of high school], and I met wh them a uple tim a week to study for my GED. I got my GED when I was 16, and I was jt dog mic full time. But there was a turng pot around then where thgs got really tough wh my dad.</p><p>I left and stayed wh a iend. I cut my hair. It was the first time that I asserted myself as an dividual and cid to remove myself om the suatn. And then I began workg wh this guy <a href=">Jeff Anl</a>, who took me unr his wg and remd me that nothg’s at stake. I was so strsed. I’d had people who’d vted my mic and been ma aware of that prsure nstantly, even though I didn’t really like the mic that much. That’s right when I started gettg to Elltt Smh and Iron & We, and I wanted to move to a more stripped-down sound. I also wanted to go to school aga and be around peers.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I heard about this five-week summer program at Berklee [School of Mic] and went on a scholarship when I was 17. It’s an expensive school and we didn’t have the money, so I had this crazy motivatn when I went for the summer program. I ma an appotment wh the Dean of Admissns and went up there wh my guar to play him a song. I told him that I didn’t know mic theory but that I wanted to go there. And he felt somethg om the song.</p><p>After I went home, I got a ll om him that San Teschi [of the Teschi Tcks Band] was dog a seri of ncerts to raise money for one stunt to get a full ri to Berklee. I end up gettg , gog to Berklee, and beg one of like two girls the guar partment while I was there. There was this nng joke around school that if you were a girl, people would jt ask you all the time, “So you’re here for vols, yeah?” So was super ol to be supported by this shreddg female guar badass. Not to foc on her genr, but was jt really enuragg to see a woman dog somethg that you mostly see guys dog. It felt good to be away om home, to make my own cisns and not have this loomg ia of a reer over my head. I really veloped a lot as a wrer while I was there.</p><p>The summer [after I graduated] I moved to New York. I met Buck [Meek, Big Thief guarist and her chief llaborator datg back to <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Buck and Anne</a>] on the day I moved there, at this rner market Mr. Kiwi. Technilly we had already played a show together Boston, so we regnized each other but weren’t sure om where. I didn’t know anyone the cy, and he was like, “Well, I’ve been here for a ltle while, I ri my bike everywhere, I n show you how to get around the cy.” We jt explored, and eventually we started to play songs together. We cid to buy that whe nversn van and go on tour, jt make that our whole liv. We didn’t make a band jt to make a band—we waed for the right people to e. But where other songwrers would let the vivid tails of such childhood trma take the lead, 25-year-old Lenker lmly exam the memory om her mom’s perspective. They had an apartment plex this one area, and there were all the l. My parents met through church and got married really shortly after, when they were both searchg for nnectn and meang, jt like everyone is when they’re 20.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>They both rried heavy burns om their childhoods and were growg up as they were raisg . And the church wasn’t like, “Hey, e jo our cult”—they jt ma them feel like part of a muny, beckoned them wh this warmth and acceptance. Then revealed self for what was, and thank God my parents were jt like, “We’re out of here.” I was only there until I was 4, but there was a lot of ridual bris—I was g out of what felt like a cloud of judgment and ntrol for another four years.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="ndb71q"></div></div><p>At that pot we lived out of our big blue van. I remember stayg wh all kds of characters for a while, all around the Midwt. We stayed Coon Rapids [Mnota] a ty apartment wh this Rsian fay: two parents and their five ltle kids, then three of kids and my parents a two bedroom. We stayed wh the two women who were livg this Amish liftyle, so my sister and I had to wear drs and srv around our heads. I remember when my dad said we uld wear pants—I was so stoked bee I was a tomboy. I went straight to wearg long, baggy shorts and backwards hats.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>We lived 14 different ho until I was 8, rentg here and there. My dad sudnly had this realizatn about the relig stuff. He felt like he’d been ceived and he was almost throwg relign off himself. It was like this pendulum that had swung all the way to one si wh beg reprsed and pent up, so jt had to go to the other. My parents beme very open, and was a trmatic shift. We went om not celebratg any holidays to havg our first Christmas and Halloween when I was 8 or 9.</p><p>At that pot my parents bought a hoe [ the Mneapolis suburbs], but right before we bought the hoe, my dad was like, “We’re sellg everythg and movg to a b, this is what God is tellg to do.” So, we sold all of . And then, sure enough, that wasn’t what we were supposed to do. A lot of my perspective had to do wh my dad bee he was always havg philosophil discsns wh me, askg qutns and enuragg me to ask qutns.</p><p>He’s a songwrer and he would spend so many nights gettg the tranc on the guar or piano where he wouldn’t want to stop. That medatn—where the most important thg was followg the path of spiratn and gettg everythg you n before disappears—really seeped to me. He would always talk about the me and how will vis you if you put your soul a certa state. On some level he was nscly givg me this tool for healg, but I’m not sure if he realized that would bee my ma form of survival.</p><p>When I was ltle, he tght me everythg he knew—basic chords but also chords and melodi that aren’t typil to learn your first stag of playg guar. He also had this way of regnizg his own shortgs and brgg teachers. My sister, brother, and I all took voice lsons, and we all practiced karate. He always wanted me to be pennt and fearls. He tght me the tools to never be alone any place, how to read people tuively. When I was 12, he would put me on a b to Mneapolis, and I would transfer St. Pl and take another b to go hang out wh this mician and stay-at-home dad, who would show me rerds and work on songwrg wh me. My dad would also take me to open mic nights, and I would play bars when I was 12.</p><p>My dad was basilly my manager om ag 13 to 16. I was on this tra towards beg a child pop star. Not that I would have necsarily bee a star, but that was the goal. It wasn’t my goal, though, which I learned after makg a uple rerds wh producers and profsnal adult micians. I jt didn’t know what my visn was at 13. Look at anybody’s work that they did between 12 and 20: You n see yourself growg up. It was like if you took a kid’s art project and put thoands of dollars behd and said, “This is solidified.” It was tratg for anyone who was part of . I didn’t have a label or anythg. My dad’s super rourceful and a really passnate speaker. He would jt prent my mic and get people who believed on board, so there were a handful of people who fund the two albums I did between 13 and 16. I went to school through eighth gra, but I had a really hard time school socially. My dad agreed to set me up wh two tutors [stead of high school], and I met wh them a uple tim a week to study for my GED. I got my GED when I was 16, and I was jt dog mic full time. But there was a turng pot around then where thgs got really tough wh my dad.</p><p>I left and stayed wh a iend. I cut my hair. It was the first time that I asserted myself as an dividual and cid to remove myself om the suatn. And then I began workg wh this guy <a href=">Jeff Anl</a>, who took me unr his wg and remd me that nothg’s at stake. I was so strsed. I’d had people who’d vted my mic and been ma aware of that prsure nstantly, even though I didn’t really like the mic that much. That’s right when I started gettg to Elltt Smh and Iron & We, and I wanted to move to a more stripped-down sound. I also wanted to go to school aga and be around peers.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>I heard about this five-week summer program at Berklee [School of Mic] and went on a scholarship when I was 17. It’s an expensive school and we didn’t have the money, so I had this crazy motivatn when I went for the summer program. I ma an appotment wh the Dean of Admissns and went up there wh my guar to play him a song. I told him that I didn’t know mic theory but that I wanted to go there. And he felt somethg om the song.</p><p>After I went home, I got a ll om him that San Teschi [of the Teschi Tcks Band] was dog a seri of ncerts to raise money for one stunt to get a full ri to Berklee. I end up gettg , gog to Berklee, and beg one of like two girls the guar partment while I was there. There was this nng joke around school that if you were a girl, people would jt ask you all the time, “So you’re here for vols, yeah?” So was super ol to be supported by this shreddg female guar badass. Not to foc on her genr, but was jt really enuragg to see a woman dog somethg that you mostly see guys dog. I met Buck [Meek, Big Thief guarist and her chief llaborator datg back to <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Buck and Anne</a>] on the day I moved there, at this rner market Mr. Kiwi. Technilly we had already played a show together Boston, so we regnized each other but weren’t sure om where. I didn’t know anyone the cy, and he was like, “Well, I’ve been here for a ltle while, I ri my bike everywhere, I n show you how to get around the cy.” We jt explored, and eventually we started to play songs together. We cid to buy that whe nversn van and go on tour, jt make that our whole liv. We didn’t make a band jt to make a band—we waed for the right people to e.
