I was privileged to grow up as a swimmer a middle-class, northern New Jersey suburb where the vast majory of my teammat and classmat would ultimately react to me beg openly gay wh somethg between acceptance and full ally-ship. I remember some tearful moments, lerally askg God to not let me be gay. I was raised Catholic, told that marriage was between a man and a woman, and that beg gay was a s (somehow worse than other ss).
When I was younger, I did not even know myself what beg gay was, and as I got olr and learned, I would never let myself fully grapple wh until senr year. When I was barely ready to embrace myself, Steve smothered me wh support and even helped me learn how to be OK wh beg gay. I went to llege at Tufts as an openly gay man on the swim team, but I still had to “e out” when someone on the team asked on a night out, “Oh, are you gog home wh that girl? ” When jok about beg gay or the word “gay” were thrown around as a slur synonymo wh “stupid” or “silly, ” I had to e out and say that wasn’t right.
