Given that star-studd portfol and his own lifelong love of movi, seemed sted that this unpretent bigwig (“I’m a kid om the Bronx,” he says) would end up ptivated by a hoe that embodi the goln age of motn pictur.</p><p>Huvane had been livg a renovated Cape Cod Los Angel’s Benedict Canyon when a Realtor tempted him wh a granr property Beverly Hills that suggted an trigug past: a 1930 half-timbered mansn wh steep storybook gabl. “As soon as I got past the gat, I knew I was trouble,” Huvane says wh a gr, addg that the two-acre spot’s picturque allure was amplified by a lazy drive and a tree-shad tennis urt. “It felt like a hoe where Hollywood people had lived.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>Ined they had. Archect Arthur R. Kelly, a master of hom graced wh “digny, a tranquil good taste and refement,” acrdg to a 1922 article <em>The Buildg Review</em>, created the stcture, once known as Ne Gabl, for Johnny Mack Brown, a former all-Amerin halfback whose promisg reer as a leadg man at MGM was cut short when his Alabama drawl proved unsued to A-list talki—and by the arrival of Clark Gable. (Huvane later disvered photographs of Gger Rogers playg tennis at Ne Gabl and Charlie Chapl attendg a garn party there.) Sadly, the terrs—which origally had been rated by celebrated Massachetts antiquarian Henry Davis Sleeper and gmented by Sleeper’s favore archect, Halfdan M. Hanson—weren’t exactly ready for their close-up. In the ’50s Brown, by then a fixture of B-gra Wterns, and his wife sold the hoe to fay iends, who remoled some of the rooms felico ways. Fortuoly, when Huvane scribed the place to signer and iend Michael S. Sce the prev owners’ alteratns had unrmed the stcture’s athetic tegry, the team felt ee to modify the floor plan and ennoble the envelope. A wall of the fay room was bumped out to provi enough of a platform so the master bedroom above uld have a balny. Wdows were refully enlarged to maximize the garn views. The roofle of one gable was adjted so the bedrooms shelters uld have more natural light. Ceilgs were raised here and there to create loftier proportns and more spatially lightful nfiguratns, such as the boldly raked tray ceilg that now crowns the master bedroom. “In many regards the hoe is now que new,” Covgton explas, “and everythg was rearranged. The origal kchen is now a gut room, for example, while the new kchen tak the place of an unual sequence of small rooms that may have been ed back then for changg cloth to play tennis.”</p><p>The centerpiece of the hoe remas the soarg entrance hall, wh a ’30s flyg stairse (the archects add a new banister) that seems ready for any one of Huvane’s notable clients to sweep down. Off this space are an array of vg statns, cludg a ntral-tone livg room, brightened by ntemporary art and dappled wh velvet sofas and welg wg chairs; the area do double duty as a screeng room, and s baronial sense of sle was enhanced by a cisn to lower the floor by about two feet. Nearby is the library, a round chamber enriched wh warm oak panelg (“Hollywood Tudor, if you will,” says Covgton, who had the lwork ctom ma England) and topped wh a mold-plaster ceilg that offers a lighthearted take on Elizabethan precent.</p><p>Huvane gravat toward tradnal furnure and muted lors, particular shas of blue and green, yet Smh found ways to challenge his client’s fort zone. The dg room, for stance, is led wh a Gracie wallpaper illtratg scen of the Ottoman Empire that mak an exotic backdrop for an aristocratic para of leather-clad chairs flankg a triple-pestal mahogany table. “I never would have picked out somethg as dramatic as that paper,” Huvane adms. “But Michael said, ‘Tst me on this. You will love .’ I did, and I do.” After a pse, the agent humbly adds, “Comg home to this hoe is pretty ol—and mak me very grateful.” And there’s not a velvet rope
