His name, Franck, isn’t revealed until midway through the film. Nor is the name of a somewhat olr man whom he beiends there—Henri, a man early middle age, who has man boobs and a bowlg-ball belly and ss apart om the younger, more nfint cisers. And neher is the name of an athletic, mtached man, Michel, whom Franck is attracted to, but who is volved wh another young man, Ramière (whose own name isn’t heard until late the film, after his ath).</p><p class="paywall">The first motor of the story is the rmal fn of the space which the movie is set: the part of the beach where men—only men—get together and hook up. (No woman is seen there, or anywhere, the urse of the film.) As for Henri, he had a girliend wh whom he ed to equent “the other si” of the lake—s hetero si—while seeg men on the down-low. The muny at large seems to accept that the beach and the lake are divid two. This very self-regulatn, the prospect and peril of lol popular le outsi the purview of higher thori, is the re of the drama.</p><p class="paywall">It’s all the more signifint that this muny is one that is stripped of the marks of muny. It is largely anonymo (there’s even a sort of joke embedd there: the French term for “rporatn” is <em>société anonyme</em>), and many of the men there are naked most of the time. In effect, all the men at the lake are strangers, regardls of their gree of physil timacy. Afterwards, Franck, alone aga, looks through the foliage toward the beach; he hears cri that sound like lt, and he se Michel and Ramière olickg the lake the goln near-sunset light, playg a dunkg game that quickly turns ser: Ramière lls on Michel to stop, and Michel don’t stop. The sequence offers an extraordary matched ntrast of sle, puttg the close-up of Franck’s ejaculatn at the same level as that of the entire lake and the killg that tak place there. It pairs pleasure and vlence, sex and ath—as if the events the lake were the natural nsequence of the volnic thst that preced .</p><p class="paywall">If sex seems to brg ath, that ath, turn, brgs sex: soon after the killg, Franck and Michel beg an affair. Franck even thks he’s fallg love, and he v Michel to his home. Michel ref, claimg that would dimish the mystique of their romance. Sex the woods is one thg, a dner at home is another. The very privacy that separat the gay men of ral France om the rt of the muny—the tac acrd that divis the beach to two sis—is a sort of livg proof that silence equals ath. In the wake of that ath, Guirdie offers what may be the strangt cematic beam of sunlight sce the last scene of Eric Rohmer’s “<a href=">Summer</a>”; ’s as if light self were bent to a primal pury of natural pleasure and natural stctn.</p><p class="paywall">Guirdie lks nature, eros, solu, the ept subjectivy, and ath. The ecstasy of sex is fundamentally at odds wh good admistratn. The foundg act of muny, and the re civic rponsibily—the disclosure of secrets, or, this se, talkg to the police—would be the ultimate ckblocker. That nflict is sentially and eply tragic. For Guirdie, the transparency of the well-n society may foster love but not sex, nstctive and endurg relatnships but not necsarily the unfathomabl of pleasure.
