I see Corky now as a ltle b offensive, but I didn’t then, bee I uldn’t then, the way a fish don’t know he’s water. A lot has happened the last 25 years (Matt Kelar is a urologist Oregon right now, for example, no, really). But the ia that popular culture n do anythg for gay dienc other than make them hate themselv is about forty-five mut old. I’m glad we ma the shift, and I wonr what the kids who’ve grown up on the other si of will make of this movie.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">I’d still remend they see . They may not love that the movie mak you lgh at the characters’ lack of talent. They may be too evolved to lgh at Parker Posey fanng away at a sgle chicken wg on a filthy grill like we did. They may groan when Corky, nied the massive fundg he’s asked for, tells the town uncil he’s gog to “go home and be [his] pillow,” the way I do now. But somehow I thk they’ll still love . It’s the most quotable movie of all time, <em>Caddyshack</em> for theater people. There is an sential kdns way down ep beneath the punchg down; everybody gets some versn of a happy endg. And the performanc, good lord. He’s been dazzled by Corky throughout the movie, and he might have been “Red, Whe and Blae” himself if dns hadn’t been held durg bs hours. On the way out, the pharmacist giv Corky a sly, ltful look. A full up-and-down. Elevator ey. On first viewg, registered as one last gay joke, but now I see as somethg more. The pharmacist lik Corky, he se him fully and is attracted to him, but Corky don’t notice. Whether out of self-loathg or oblivns or both, Corky throws himself at the hot straight boy and miss the perfectly good man right ont of him. It’s a smart, silent ltle ment on what a lifetime of shame will do to a person. A moment of real empathy.</p><p data-no-id="15" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Or maybe ’s jt one last gay joke.
