Jonathan Larson, the mil’s creator, had died the night before the show's first preview at only 35 years old. Schulman says that she, like many others, assumed he'd died of AIDS. But Larson (a straight whe cis man) had a bra anrysm, and his unexpected ath led to a heightened sense of meang to his new mil about livg (at least, if you're a straight whe guy).</p><p>As Schulman watched the mil that would eventually bee the precursor to <em>Haton</em>, she wr about the experience watchg scen om her real life — and her subsequent novel -— on stage. Both followed mostly queer people livg the East Village the early '90s, when AIDS was ravagg the artists muny, except the central character <em>Rent</em>, Mark, was a straight whe guy (like Larson himself). The characters and stori om <em>People Trouble</em> were slightly rest <em>Rent</em>: The ma character’s girliend, an artist, leav him for a Black lbian; AIDS was ed as a plot pot to kill off the Puerto Rin drag queen character, only to further the narrative for a heterosexual uple who also had AIDS but were able to survive.</p><p>The were jt a few of the siari <em>Rent</em> has to Schulman's heavily tobgraphil book, but after s of sharg her story <em>Stagtck</em> and terviews, she's not worried about gettg cred. (Many who knew Larson have rroborated his knowledge and e of <em>People Trouble</em> durg the creatn of <em>Rent</em>.)</p><p>Today, Schulman is more terted how AIDS narrativ ntue to be misreprented mastream pictns, both cludg and beyond <em>Rent</em>.</p><p>"There still has yet to be a substantial rporate product that has accurately reprented the AIDS crisis, even to date," Schulman says. "So to have those piec pict alone, abandoned gay men wh AIDS who had no polil movement and no muny support was absolutely the oppose of what had already occured."</p><p><em>Rent</em> don't do much to change this ia, eher.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>“The fact that the straight whe male is the protagonist is ultimately the problem," she says. "But then there's the specifics about how gay people wh AIDS die and straight people wh AIDS live, and that's the centerpiece of <em>Rent</em>."</p><p>Fstratgly, straight people long have taken queer stori and eher sanized or sold them as their own (ually both simultaneoly), so Schulman don't feel like this phenomenon is specific to her. She nam Madonna's "Vogue" as beg one of the more well-documented attempts to prof off of queer culture, but also fds there to be ls obv on that, like <em>Rent</em>’s relatnship to <em>People Trouble</em>, are ls clear-cut om a pyright perspective.</p><p>"Grassroots ias that were radil get recycled when they are on the nose, and get reattributed to the person who is attached to the recyclg, and then they are posned as the people who vented those ias," Schulman says. "Once somethg is on the nose, 's no longer radil, bee 's easily ntaable. And when ias require social transformatns and reposng of hierarchi, that's when they are the posn to create real change, and that's when they bee reprsed."</p><p>Still, Schulman remas hopeful that there will eventually be somethg that eclips <em>Rent</em> or other poor pictns of AIDS the media, a narrative that gets right for the queer people and the people of lor who were there the thick of all.</p><p>"If anyone's payg attentn out there who has power rporate reprentatn," she says, "'s time for thentic stori about what actually happened durg the epicenter of the AIDS
