“Saturday Night Live” st members, died yterday, at the age of fifty-seven. Hooks, a talented sger and actor who played everyone om one of the lounge-sgg Sweeney Sisters to Hillary Clton, was a key part of what ma her time on the show, om 1986 to 1991, the send “Saturday Night Live” goln era. Like her fellow st member and equent onscreen partner Phil Hartman, Hooks had a gift for subtlety. She uld satirize whout rortg to meanns; she had the timg and rtrat to highlight the humor a script whout overwhelmg . She wasn’t “big.” She, like Hartman, and Nora Dunn and others, was a grownup. Her performanc were both kd and acute. As a young edic performer, she joed the Groundlgs, Los Angel, and appeared on the great HBO show “Not Necsarily the News.” In 1986, she joed the st of “Saturday Night Live.” She left 1991 for a role on “Digng Women,” and later -starred “Primetime Glick” wh Mart Short. She had rol on “The Simpsons” and “Futurama,” and was beloved for her performance as a <a href=">tour gui at the Alamo</a> “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.”</p><p class="paywall">There’s a moment the <a href=">1986 Sweeney Sisters Christmas sketch</a> that ptur the greatns both of Hooks and of her era of  “Saturday Night Live.” The snazzy, big-haired, gown-wearg Sweeney Sisters are medley savants, able to turn any jail cell or hoe party to a B-list Vegas night club. Hooks plays Candy Sweeney, and Dunn plays her sister Liz, who’s jt announced to everyone at Candy’s Christmas get-together that she and her boyiend (William Shatner) jt got engaged. Carvey’s Church Lady, by that pot, has already bee shtick—a livery system for tchphras like “Isn’t that special?” But Hooks and Hartman play the Bakkers more subtly than they played themselv.</p><p class="paywall">Her Sead O’Connor on the gen <a href=">“Satra Group” sketch</a>, om 1991, had this same qualy. Wearg a bald p, a leather jacket, and tted glass, and speakg a strong Irish accent, Hooks played O’Connor as proud and smart, prcipled to the pot of humorlsns.
