And though Sachs, for his part, unrstands that his role as Brimsley <em>Bridgerton</em> is a much smaller sectn of the romance stori swirlg around the ton, he’s been thrilled to see his character’s backstory fill out through young Brimsley, played by Sam Clemmett, and to have his own Brimsley thread that arcs through his performance <em> Queen Charlotte</em>.</p><p data-no-id="5" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">“There was this extraordary moment while filmg the fal scen of <em>Queen Charlotte</em>,” rells Sachs. “It was a night shoot at Blenheim Palace, the scene outsi the ball where [young Brimsley and Reynolds] are dancg, and fas to Brimsley dancg on his own. We were so buzzed by the time we fished that shoot; we were jt standg on the steps of our hotel Oxford, havg a beer as the sun was g up. And I realized that next door to the hotel was the theater where I ma my but 30 years earlier. That’s where all started, the Oxford Playhoe, where I got my first job out of drama school. I left that show 2011, and they rried on for another five seasons. People regnize me for that all the time here, which is weird. But I thk ’s bee Netflix bought six months before lockdown, and lots of people started watchg om the start. I never thought I’d be on televisn, if I’m hont. I never saw anyone like me. I thought I’d jt do plays, but now I’m the send biggt seri ever. I have this theory that if you want lns of viewers, should have a sgle tle, beg wh a B, and I should be [<em>lghs</em>]. I read a uple of l, and then I pletely fot about . Bee we don’t do romantic fictn; we do Aten or Dickens. Then they rang and said that they’d like me to play Brimsley. I asked who Charlotte was gog to be played by, and they told me Golda, and that was the first I knew of s tentns to be clive. I got the six episos, and I thought, “I’ll read two today and do the other four tomorrow.” I read all six one stg. I was really hopg season two would be as succsful as was bee, as a gay man, havg a leadg actor [Jonathan Bailey] who was openly gay playg a straight romantic lead and not beg an issue was amazg to see. I knew uld change our dtry — all those young actors who I know have been told to keep quiet n now pot at Jonny and go, “Nope, don’t harm your reer.” Season one changed the racial polics of stume drama; season two changed sexual polics our dtry. So, all that standg about season one and two, I was thkg, “Okay, so this is his fay, and this is where he’s om, etcetera.” And then Shonda up wh somethg far more tertg! People keep askg what happened to Brimsley and Reynolds, and I jt go, “I’m sayg nothg bee whatever I e up wh would be nothg pared to if Shonda ever approached that qutn!”</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>VV: When did you know that Brimsley was gog to be young Brimsley?</strong></p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>HS:</strong> Tom Veri sent me an email sayg he was so pleased that I was gog to be <em>Queen Charlotte</em>, but I knew nothg about at that pot. They wanted a picture of me my 20s, which I hated havg my photo taken, so I mmaged through and found my drama school graduate picture. They sent me the picture of Sam, and I was massively flattered. But I wasn’t sure if Sam was! Like I’ve said, when I first signed on, I didn’t realize that young Brimsley was gog to be such a big part of <em>Queen Charlotte</em>. But when I got those scripts, I read them like they were crack e bee I was fally fdg out about who I was. I make this rather facile joke that I thought I’d been givg peak Idris Elba heterosexual butchns for two seasons, so I don’t know where Shonda got the ia that Brimsley was gay, and that always mak people lgh really loudly. But I am thrilled wh all.</p><p data-no-id="23" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>VV: Did you meet Sam Clemmett to talk about him takg on the role of young Brimsley?</strong></p><p data-no-id="24" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>HS:</strong> I met Sam at the read-through, and we jt bond immediately. It was like havg a new nephew. And bee he’d done two years <em>Harry Potter</em>, I knew we’d speak the same language, as we’re both theater creatur. We met about three tim after that, but om the begng, I said, “It’s yours. Do wh whatever you like.” I didn’t want him to feel any way beholn to me. I said, “You’re startg his story; you do whatever you like.” I jt wanted him to have that eedom. What I fd fascatg is that of the four of who cross over om <em>Bridgerton</em>, you knew the least about Brimsley, so therefore, you get to know the most about him <em>Queen Charlotte</em>. Adjoa, Golda, and me got to watch three scen, and was credibly movg bee they had tablished those women as strong, powerful, matriarchal, bright, wty women, and to see Arsema and India, the really lite, sort of not yet fully formed young people — the three of were jt floods of tears. It was almost like watchg home vios, rememberg when I was that young and life hadn’t h me yet. Normally, she’s throwg orrs over her shoulr bee I’m always five feet behd her, but <em>Queen Charlotte</em> there’s more talkg between the two. That first scene when I’m talkg to her about her dghters and we are eyeballg each other and she’s not bollockg me, she’s actually listeng to what I’m sayg, was movg bee wh the panmic and Covid protols, I sudnly felt like was the first b of actg I’d done for about four years sce most of what I get to do is rpond to her orrs. Golda, Tom, and I all hugged after that scene. Tom is a really good actor, but a brilliant director, and I thk subnscly we’d all been wag for a moment like this where we got to explore the characters together a more -pth way. I love the meaty moments I get to have wh Golda. Tom is so genero as a director — he se everybody and creat this really warm, creative set. I’m sure ’s part of the reason Reynolds and Brimsley don’t stay together the end. It certaly domated her life — her sire to look after him and to get an heir meant she may not have been the bt mother possible. There’s that betiful scene when I tell her that her dghters are not gettg married not bee they’re beg difficult or willful, but bee they don’t want to leave her here alone while Gee is still alive, and that ’s an extraordary act of love, what they’re dog. She thks they’re jt tryg to be irratg, and I’m tellg her that’s not who they are. Gee’s illns has affected her, ’s affected Brimsley, ’s affected her children. It’s sort of like she’s the CEO of three of the biggt pani on the pla. And when one is unr that prsure, some of the kdns gets bbed off at the sis, and her kids get the neck. When I say I’m <em>Bridgerton</em>, even though some people haven’t watched , they know exactly what is all about. That’s a real thrill. I tell people is the equivalent of a long, hot bath wh lots of ndl and bath oil listeng to your favore album. People need distractn. We love the grty crime dramas and the toxic fay sagas, but <em>Bridgerton</em> is this world we all didn’t know we need. The ma thg is the joy that people get om .
