Rather, wouldn’t have been crazy before the panmic. 2019 was the biggt year of Paak’s reer: He released his first top-ten album, <em>Ventura;</em> went on a massive world tour that clud a sold-out show at Madison Square Garn; and picked up a uple of Grammy Awards. “Then, fast-forward, and ’s COVID,” he says, putterg near the swg set that for now has ught the kids’ attentn, “and I have no choice but to jt stay the hoe.”</p><p data-no-id="4" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Paak, thirty-five, maly spent last year workg wh a buddg artist much closer to home. Sce the panmic began, he and Soul have llab’d on several projects—om Instagram dance mem to actual mic vios. Havg dner wh Bno Mars is normal. And havg BTS shout you out, that's jt bee he's the olt guy.”</p><p data-no-id="7" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Paak's own childhood was much different. He grew up Oxnard, along the ast north of L. A. His father, an addict who was abive to his wife, went to prison when Paak was jt seven; father and son never spoke aga. When Paak was a senr high school, his mother, who’d opened and shuttered a strawberry bs before gamblg profsnally, also went to prison, for securi d. “I’ve been through a lot of crazy sh. Comg up, I was jt ed to a lot of tragedy,” he tells me. “But I was also ed to a lot of optimism and hope and fay.” </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Paak’s mic is a lot of thgs: a blend of funk, soul, hip-hop, and R&B, often wh thought- provokg lyrics. Above all else, sounds <em>optimistic.</em> Watchg him perform live—seated at a dm set, grng manilly, sptg vers and sgg chos, keepg the beat all the while for his live band, the Free Natnals—is a form of mic therapy. Who knows when that’ll once aga be possible?</p><p data-no-id="9" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">“That’s probably where the biggt void is at,” Paak says. “For years, you’re on stag, and be like you need the sh of the admiratn; you need to hear people cheerg your name, to know that you still got . I thk he was probably ed to . But he’s havg fun now bee a lot of people have more time on their hands, so they n e vis him and make mic wh big Uncle Dre.” (In early January, Dre, fifty-five, had a bra anrysm; he announced on Instagram that he was “dog great and gettg excellent re om my medil team. But, of urse, Dre will always let Paak know if he's feelg a track or not.</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"His ear is his ear, man, he be hearg sh and 's like if he a't feelg , he'll let you know right away, man. It hardly ever has to grow on him, he knows right away," Paak tells me. "I like that about him though, sometim I'm a ltle cisive, so really helps me. It's like, 'Okay, well Dre a't feelg this, so maybe this a't the one, or I'm gog to take a chance on this.'"<br /></p><p data-no-id="15" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">The new album will also clu a llaboratn om fellow crilly acclaimed multi-stmentalist H.E.R. “Those ssns were amazg,” Paak says. “It's rare you meet real micians now that are artists that n really produce and handle everythg, and she's one of them. She's a monster the stud, and n play that damn guar and sg her face off.”</p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">He's also stayed touch wh Kendrick Lamar, who he worked wh on "Tts" off 2018's <em>Oxnard</em>. "We talk jt through texts and jt off and on," Paak tells me. "I always check on him and the fay and make sure he's good. Paak scrib their meet-cute. It was the summer of 2019. Mens “me to our Toronto show,” he says. “My dumb ass, I didn’t even know who was at first. I’d heard his name and sh, but I was like, ‘I’m not sure; I thk he’s an actor or somethg.’ I looked him up. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, this kid, he’s huge.’ I met him after the show, and he was jt the olt kid. Jt so pole, man.” </p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">And on March 5, Paak and Bno Mars shared their first llaborative song as Silk Sonic. The track, "Leave the Door Open" is a natural meetg of styl—a vtage, saty soul slow jam.</p><p data-no-id="21" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">"I'm so blsed that I never had to be nobody but me, and I n manver eely," he tells me. "That's the thg that keeps me the most happy is beg able to go to different rooms, whether 's wh the gangsters or the rockers or the hipsters or the tellectuals. It's like, everybody knows Anrson , I jt wanted the rpect all those rooms."</p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Mastream crossovers and dance mem are great and all, but Paak jt wants to be back onstage. “I want , man, I’m ready for the lights,” he says.
