put Keh Richards, the prcipal guarist and the mil soul of the Rollg Ston, at the top of their annual list of “rock stars most likely to die” wh the year. Even by rock standards, Richards was a heroic nsumer of hero, e, mle, LSD, peyote, Mandrax, Tual, marijuana, bourbon, and other rehments, and seemed to all observers that he was livg on borrowed time. Rock’s sualty list was already omoly long; Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Jopl merely headled the necrology. In 1969, Richards and his fellow-Ston had lost Brian Jon, who drowned a pool jt a few weeks after the band fired him. Richards did not so much guard his mortaly as flnt . He memorialized his near-nstant sensibily by givg open accs to Robert Frank, Annie Leibovz, and other image-makers, who ptured him, backstage or hotel rooms, half drsed and thoroughly zonked. You looked at those pictur of Richards, slumped, stoned, and stupid, and you figured was only a matter of days before the wir would announce that he’d choked to ath on his own vom.</p><p class="paywall">In fact, Richards went on and on, stumblg through ncerts a nartic haze, sleepg through rehearsals, always on the edge of oblivn, and yet, together wh Mick Jagger, producg some of the most memorable pop mic of the time. Between 1968 and 1972, the Ston rerd “Beggars Banquet,” “Let It Bleed,” “Sticky Fgers,” and “Exile on Ma St.,” the re of their repertoire. They went on to perform those songs as long as Satra performed “Love and Marriage.” The distctivens of the Ston was due ls to Jagger’s vols than to Richards’s pacy to gt the blu-guar styl of Chuck Berry and Jimmy Reed and create somethg new. There were far better technicians than Richards, far better soloists, but his sense of rhythm and riff and taste, his signature staed chords and open spac, gave the band s sound. And, through all, the Grim Reaper was nied a backstage pass. <em>New Mil Exprs,</em> havg kept Keh at No. 1 on s athwatch for ten years, fally gave up and nced his immortaly.</p><p class="paywall">The Ston have not wrten a song of nsequence thirty years, but they have survived four s longer than their great ntemporari the Beatl. And, even as their origaly has waned, their performg un and rporate mache has been honed to perfectn. Sce 1989, the Ston have earned more than two billn dollars gross revenu, helped along by sponsorship als wh Microsoft, Anhser-Bch, and E*Tra. Promotour, Promopub, Promotone, and Midor, firms based Holland, for tax reasons, handle the var ends of the Ston’ bs ncerns, and everythg is watched over by teams of acuntants, immigratn lawyers, secury experts, and, until very recently, an aristocratic bs adviser named Prce Rupert zu Loewenste-Wertheim-Frnberg. Even years whout tours or albums, the Ston fd a way. They licensed “Start Me Up” to Microsoft when the pany rolled out Wdows 95, and “She’s a Rabow” to Apple when a le of iMacs was need of promotn. Acrdg to <em>Fortune</em>, the Ston are behd the merchandisg of some fifty products, cludg unrwear sold by Agent Provotr. The Ston logo—a fat, lasciv tongue thst through sg, open lips––is as regnizable on the rporate landspe as the Goln Arch.</p><p class="paywall">“The whole bs thg is predited a lot on the tax laws,” Keh Richards told <em>Fortune</em>. “It’s why we rehearse Canada and not the U.S. A lot of our astute mov have been basilly keepg up wh tax laws, where to go, where not to put . Whether to s on or not. We left England bee we’d be payg nety-eight cents on the dollar. We left, and they lost out. No tax at all. I don’t want to screw anybody out of anythg, least of all the ernments that I work wh. We put thirty percent holdg until we sort out.” Keh may fancy himself a symbol of ’68, but he channels the fisl policy of Grover Norquist.</p><p class="paywall">The last time the Ston were out on the road, between 2005 and 2007, they took more than half a billn dollars—the hight-grossg tour of all time. On Copabana Beach, R Janeiro, they played to more than a ln people. Few spectacl morn life are more sublimely ridiculo than the geriatric members of the Ston playg the openg stras of “Street Fightg Man.” The arena is typilly jammed wh middle-aged fans, who have donned après-office relaxed-sized jeans, paid the ster, parked the mivan the lot, and, for a few hundred dollars a seat, shimmy along wh Mick Jagger, who, havg traed for the tours as if for a champnship bout, pranc exhstibly through a two-hour set, at his bt evokg the spawn of Jam Brown and Gumby, at his worst g off like someone’s liquored-up Aunt Gert, termed to trash her prettier sister’s weddg wh a gome performance on the dance floor. Ever sce 1975, “the tour of the giant flatable ck,” as Richards lls , the Ston have tried to outdo themselv wh spectacle. Ocsnally, they have gone too far. “There was a huge bs of gettg elephants onstage Memphis,” Richards says, “until they end up crashg through ramps and shtg all over the stage rehearsals and were abandoned.” But, beyond the spectacle, we e to admire the unlikely persistence of the Ston, an enty nearly half a century old, chuggg illy, termedly on. The lads are approachg seventy. Pney, dyed, and bony, they storm through a set list that is by now as venerable and unchangg as the Diabelli Variatns. “You do, ocsnally, jt look at your feet and thk, ‘This is the same old sh every night,’ ” Richards has said, and yet he go on playg and the crowds go on payg, reluctant to give up, the last lk to glory days.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The newt artifact of the band’s endurance is Keh Richards’s chipper new tobgraphy, lled, fiantly, “Life” (Ltle, Brown; $29.99). Half book, half brand extensn, ’s an entertag, ramblg monologue, a slurry romp through the life of a man who knew every pleasure, nied himself nothg, and never paid the price. Maybe <em>you</em> n’t always get what you want. The le don’t apply to Keh.</p><p class="paywall">One obv veat: a memoir by a man whose memory is fogged by untls years of nartic obleratn is a memoir of a particular kd. In 1978, when Richards was asked why the Ston lled their new album “Some Girls,” he replied, “Bee we uldn’t remember their fuckg nam.” Neverthels, Ltle, Brown paid Richards seven ln dollars to produce the book. Richards, turn, selected a skilled ghost––Jam Fox, the thor of “Whe Mischief,” a well-told history of the murr of Josslyn Hay, the twenty-send Earl of Erroll, who was one of the many dissipated expats livg Happy Valley, outsi Nairobi. For Fox, wrg about the dgs, sexual adventure, and exquise boredom Happy Valley was good preparatn for “Life.”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">Richards and Fox know why the rear has put down his money: the same reason that Keh staggers around the stage even today, thirty years after kickg hero, and, grng manially, tells the cheerg crowd, “I’m glad to be here! I’m glad to be anywhere!” It’s the tillatn of hearg om someone who has never seen the si of a factory or an office, and has nsumed what there is to nsume and survived to crow about the fact. This is the man who vented the riff to “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfactn” his sleep and yet has known satisfactns beyond the imaggs of Giao Casanova. And so “Life” is a hurry to enhance the Myth of Keef and give what we want. It opens wh an extend scene of the Ston tourg the Amerin South, 1975, their rs packed wh high-class nartics––“pure Merck e, the fluffy pharmactil blow.” But the town of Fordyce, Arkansas, populatn four thoand two hundred and thirty-seven, Richards ns to trouble wh the ps. An antic narrative of Ston misbehavr and Southern jtice ensu. Richards, who has jt bragged to of his posssn and gtn of vast quanti of dope, feigns prehensn the face of a possible prison sentence. Which, as ual, he dodg.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Richards boasts of his nstutn. He not only reunts his “acid-fueled road trip wh John Lennon” but also mak sure to tell that Lennon “uldn’t really keep up.” Richards rells, “He’d try and take anythg I took, but whout my good trag. A ltle b of this, a ltle b of that, uple of downers, a uple of uppers, ke and smack, and then I’m gog to work. I was eewheelg. And John would evably end up my john, huggg the porcela.”</p><p class="paywall">At tim, the book sounds like a nsequence-ee versn of William Burroughs’s “Junky.” In one extend passage, Richard scrib his daily diet:</p><blockquote class="BlockquoteEmbedWrapper-sc-SdiGL jPeLne paywall blockquote-embed"><div class="BlockquoteEmbedContent-RbGs gmbtPx blockquote-embed__ntent"><p>I would take a barburate to wake up, a recreatnal high pared to hero, though jt as dangero s own way. Otherwise I jt had too much energy to burn. So you wake up slow, sce you have the time. More specifilly, “Life” follows the subtegory of the mician-addict memoir: Art Pepper’s “Straight Life,” Ana O’Day’s “High Tim Hard Tim,” Hampton Haw’s “Raise Up Off Me,” and Mil Davis’s fabuloly profane llaboratn wh Qucy Troupe.</p><p class="paywall">After fishg Richards’s book, I read a stack of the jazz memoirs, along wh bgraphi of other addict geni, cludg Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker. In the wake of revisg all the speratn, the bad dope, the prison terms, the liv cut short, I found somethg almost creepy about lucky Keh’s ego and blhe spirs. Richards is full of ckeyed advice for the potential junkie and voyr: no malg, take only the bt and purt dgs, and, please, never overdo . (“Well, I shouldn’t say <em>never;</em> sometim I was absolutely fuckg atose.”)</p><p class="paywall">Richards admir the mic of his precsors and betters, but he do not feel their pa. He is almost uniquely sulated om the junkie’s prediments by layers of money, attorneys, and privilege. Charlie Parker ma “Relax’ at Camarillo” after emergg om a mental hospal California of the same name. Richards ma “Exile on Ma St.” as a tax exile livg on an tate Villeanche-sur-Mer. Durg breaks om shootg up and rehearsg, Richards would ply the Mederranean a speedboat search of Eurotrash: “We’d pull to Monte Carlo for lunch. Have a chat wh eher Onassis’s lot or Niarchos’s, who had big yachts there.”</p><p class="paywall">Another staple of the rock memoir or bgraphy is the talogue of sexual nquts, and, on this subject, Richards is almost shy. He tells that his lleagu Jagger and Bill Wyman bloodlsly tabulated their nquts. Keh is the passive sort. The ladi e to him. “I have never put the make on a girl my life,” he says. They are que the pair, young junki love, nstantly dodgg jail terms. They nnot, however, dodge tragedy. In 1976, while Keh is on tour, his third child wh Pallenberg, an fant named Tara, di his crib. This is Keh’s nsired exprsn of regret: “Never knew the son of a bch or barely. I changed his nappy twice, I thk. . . . Ana and I, to this day, have never talked about .” This exceeds the lims of ordary reticence.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Pallenberg’s addictn and misbehavr are too much even for Richards. It’s not so much that he’s nvced she had an affair wh Jagger—her third Stone!––as that she outstripped Keh’s lims the nce partment. “She was unstoppably self-stctive,” he wr. “She was like Hler; she wanted to take everythg down wh her.” Fally, Keh fds happs, and a far steadier existence, wh an Amerin mol named Patti Hansen.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Richards is rough on many people this book, as he has been numero terviews over the years. He thks ’s part of his roguish charm. He slags the punks as talentls. He has an ocsnal nice word for U2, but he is dismissive of everyone om Prce (“an overrated midget”) to Elton John (“an old bch”) and Bce Sprgsteen (“If there was anythg better around, he’d still be workg the bars of New Jersey”). The unschooled may be surprised to read “Life” of how hard Richards n be on Mick Jagger, whom he sometim refers to as “Brenda” or “His Majty.” He nnot bear Jagger’s pretensns, his “lculatn,” his overattentn to bs affairs, his lt for tablishment approval, and his ocsnal tenncy to treat Richards and the other band members like the help. He portrays Jagger as fsy, joyls, and out for himself: “It’s almost as if Mick was aspirg to be Mick Jagger, chasg his own phantom. And gettg sign nsultants to help him do . . . . I ed to love to hang wh Mick, but I haven’t gone to his drsg room , I don’t thk, twenty years. Sometim I miss my iend.” Richards, who liv like a squire on gated tat ral England and Connecticut, nces that Jagger is his “brother,” and he will always have his back, but he clearly thks of himself as the more thentic man and mician.</p><p class="paywall">Some rears may light Richards’s sly have--all-ways self-regard, but for me the most wng sectns of the book are the tal of his beg, the way his close adolcent iendship wh Jagger and their mutual love for their blu hero rapidly led to the formatn of the Greatt Rock-and-Roll Band the World. It’s a thrice-sung story, but Richards and Fox put the song over well.</p><p class="paywall">Keh Richards and Mick Jagger were children of postwar London and schoolmat at the Wentworth Primary School, Dartford. Keh was an only child of workg-class parents. His father, Bert, was a foreman at a General Electric plant. Raised on jazz, blu, and the emergg sounds of Amerin pop mic, Richards sang the school choir. After his voice changed, he lost tert school and started hangg around Dimash’s ice-cream parlor, listeng to the jebox. “It was the one ltle b of Amerina Dartford,” he wr. “Life was black-and-whe; the Technilor was jt around the rner, but wasn’t there yet 1959.” At night, he tuned to Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Ltle Richard, and his hero, Elvis Prley, on Rad Luxembourg. The were the years of “the Awakeng,” Bra’s enthiastic receptn of Amerin mic. A buddg mician, Richards beme terted simen: Elvis’s guar player, Stty Moore; Fats Domo’s arranger and tmpet player, Dave Bartholomew. At Sidcup Art College, a feer school to a job at J. Walter Thompson, Richards spent all his time goofg off and listeng to blu rerds. Then, 1961, at the Dartford tra statn, he ran to Jagger, who, he disvered, was a blu fanatic and a rerd llector. Jagger had all the latt disks om Chs: Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howl’ Wolf, Willie Dixon. The two boys listened to the rerds over and over aga.</p><p class="paywall">Jagger and Richards started a band and lled , at first, Ltle Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. By the sprg of 1962, they had hooked up wh another blu nut and guar player, Brian Jon. The followg January, they were joed by a dmmer wh a taste for jazz, Charlie Watts, and a bass player, Bill Wyman, whose ma qualifitn was the ownership of a Vox amplifier. The were the Rollg Ston.</p><p class="paywall">As the band took shape, Richards learned to py B. B. Kg’s sgle-note simplicy and T-Bone Walker’s double-strg solos––a technique that saved the band money, bee uld “elimate the need for a horn sectn.” Richards and Jagger had a simple ambn: all they wanted was to be “the bt blu band London and show the fuckers what’s what.” Monkish their votn, they lived cheap apartments and practiced through the night. “Anybody that strayed om the nt to get laid, or try to get laid, was a traor,” Richards rells.</p><p class="paywall">The band played clubs around London lled the Flamgo, the Ealg, the Crawdaddy, the Marquee, and the Red Ln, and, the fluid days of 1963—as the Beatl, a relatively veteran band, were their ascendancy—the Ston released their first sgle, a ver of Chuck Berry’s “Come On.” The rerd shot onto the charts, and wh a week the Ston were stars. That was all took. “Sudnly they’re drsg up dogtooth-check fuckg sus and we’re shed along on the ti,” Richards says, but the boys soon got rid of the psdo-Beatl look. They did fe on their own terms. First as an openg act for Ltle Richard and Bo Diddley (om whom they learned untls lsons of pacg and showmanship) and then as headlers, they ed rts wherever they went.</p><p class="paywall">“In England, for eighteen months, I’d say, we never fished a show,” Richards rells. Their short set featured vers of “Not Fa Away,” “I’m a Kg Bee,” and “Around and Around,” and yet the screamg was so tense that some nights the band jt played “Popeye the Sailor Man” to see if anyone would notice. The boys threw bottle ps and s; the girls were prepared to rip the Ston apart, so ep was their erotic enzy. An old janor who had helped clean up told Richards, “Very good show. Not a dry seat the hoe.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">When the Ston first me to Ameri, the summer of 1964, they played on bills behd Bobby Goldsboro and the Chiffons, and suffered the sults of Dean Mart, who mocked them as hairy primiv. They even shared a bill wh a ntortnist lled the Amazg Rubber Man, who, e to thk of , may have been a formative fluence on Jagger’s evolvg stage antics. It was only when, that same year, Jagger and Richards––the self-proclaimed Glimmer Tws––started wrg songs that they pulled to a race wh the Beatl. 1965 was the year of “Satisfactn.” In a pattern that was typil of their llaboratn the followg s, Richards me up wh the riff and Jagger filled out the lyrics.</p><p class="paywall">In the teen-aged imagatn, the virtue of beg a member of the band is that you end the day the sack wh the partner, or partners, of your choice. Not so, Richards says: “You might be havg a swim or screwg the old lady, but somewhere the back of the md, you’re thkg about this chord sequence or somethg related to a song. No matter what the hell’s gog on.”</p><p class="paywall">Never do Richards show as much pleasure as when he is scribg the feelg of playg his stment, particularly the electric guar, which, he says, is “like holdg on to an electric eel.” The e-to-J moment “Life” is purely mil, and occurs “late 1968 or early 1969,” after Richards has disvered one of the secrets of the blu. The six strgs of the guar are ordarily tuned E-A-D-G-B-E. After llaboratg wh the great stmentalist and arranger Ry Coor, Richards picked up “open G” tung, which the guar is tuned to a G chord: D-G-D-G-B-D. Mississippi blumen like Robert Johnson, Son Hoe, and Charley Patton ed this tung; so did Don Everly on “Bye Bye Love.” Richards removed the lowt strg on a Fenr Telester tuned G-D-G-B-D and me up wh the riffs to “Tumblg Dice,” “Brown Sugar,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “All Down the Le,” “Can’t You Hear Me Knockg,” and many others. Anyone who played a garage band the sixti and seventi remembers the experience of tryg to play the songs and disverg that they didn’t que have the drong, ronatg sound that Keh Richards got on, say, “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!,” the bt of the Ston’ live albums. Now, of urse, you n go on YouTube, punch , say, “Brown Sugar, lson,” and some fourteen-year-old wh a vio mera and guar is there stctg you on the way to e open G and “play like Keh.” Keh himself says bt: “If you’re workg the right chord, you n hear this other chord gog on behd , which actually you’re not playg. It’s there. It fi logic. And ’s jt lyg there sayg, ‘Fuck me.’ ”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Keh Richards is sixty-six. He’s a grandfather. He’s had emergency cranial surgery, albe for a very Keh sort of reason: he fell out of a tree Fiji. He says that he leads a “gentleman’s life.” He reads a lot of Patrick O’Brian’s sea adventur and Gee MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman novels. He has, mt be reported, also fallen off his library ladr. Where he ed to have a wolfhound named Syphilis, he now has a goln Lab lled Pumpk. He and his wife pack Pumpk onto a private jet and go to relax at their spread Turks and Cais. Gimme Shelter ed. He liv like a private-equy pirate.</p><p class="paywall">Age has provid Richards wh a ltle sight to his own ntradictns. He is thrilled wh his life, but he is also aware of the hollow nature of his outlaw image: “I n’t untie the threads of how much I played up to the part that was wrten for me. I mean the skull rg and the broken tooth and the kohl,” he wr. “Is half and half? I thk a way your persona, your image, as ed to be known, is like a ball and cha. People thk I’m still a goddamn junkie. It’s thirty years sce I gave up the dope! Image is like a long shadow. Even when the sun go down, you n see . I thk some of is that there is so much prsure to be that person that you bee , maybe, to a certa pot that you n bear. It’s impossible not to end up beg a parody of what you thought you were.”</p><p class="paywall">One of the more touchg moments the book is when the very young Rollg Ston arrive at the Chs rerdg studs, Chigo, a blu Mec. A workman is patg the ceilg. The workman’s name is McKley Manfield, better known as Muddy Waters. The Ston were head for a life of lns, and the least they uld do over time was pay tribute to their hero. They named the band for one of Manfield’s songs and sang his prais and the prais of all their bt forebears. Richards had ped the Reaper, but not his most sential bt, and he was te to . “Me?” Keh once said. “I jt want to be Muddy Waters.
