January 20th, at around 12:04 <em class="small">P.M.</em>, the natn’s nservative talk-show hosts once aga beme the voice of the ristance. Many of them had spent eight years grapplg wh the vexg Princy of Gee W. Bh, so when Barack Obama was sworn they sudnly found themselv eed om the hibg effects of ambivalence. A liberal new Print had joed the faiar array of villas the Hoe and the Senate, and although none of the big-name talk-show hosts celebrated this velopment, all of them seemed energized by . Sean Hanny, who had generally been supportive of Bh, ed a spiffy new slogan to reflect the changed polil climate: “The Conservative Unrground, the Home of Conservatism Exile.” Rh Limbgh, who sometim cricized Bh durg his send term, quickly realized that the feat of the Republin Party would only enhance his stature as a rog speechmaker, unnstraed by electoral polics. (After Limbgh said, of Print Obama, “I hope he fails,” the Obama Admistratn and s alli found eful to clare Limbgh the unofficial lear of the Republin Party; May, Limbgh announced his rignatn wh mock solemny, sayg, “I was appoted whout my acquicence.”) And on January 19th, the day before the Inguratn, the rad and televisn host Glenn Beck lnched a nightly show on Fox News, ftly channellg the fiance and bewilrment of dissint Ameri.</p><p class="paywall">Even this world of born-aga refeniks, Michael Savage is an anomaly: a heretic among heretics, nearly as ntemptuo of his fellow rad stars (he refers to Limbgh as “the golfer,” and lls Beck “the hemorrhoid wh ey”) as he is of Print Obama. He lls himself a “gen-yoo-we pennt nservative,” which is a kd of sal pch—and, apparently, an effective one. His daily broadst, “The Savage Natn,” is one of the most popular talk shows the untry. The magaze <em>Talkers</em> ranks Savage third on s “Heavy Hundred” list, behd only Limbgh and Hanny, and timat that he reach more than eight ln listeners weekly.</p><p class="paywall">What he giv those listeners is one of the most addictive programs on rad, and one of the least predictable. San Francis is his adopted home town (he lls “San Fransicko,” a nickname that may or may not be affectnate, pendg on the ntext and his mood), but he livers his analysis and his anecdot a vegary New York accent, ocsnally seasoned wh Yiddish, and this voice alone nveys somethg of the nostalgia he feels for his boyhood the Bronx and Queens, the forti and fifti. He is quick to anger, and often provis evince of his firm belief that polil unrstatement is overrated, as when he mentned, passg, that Print Obama was “draggg by the neck to the neo-Marxist natn of the new Venezuela.” He yields to no one his disda for liberals (he once wrote a book lled “Liberalism Is a Mental Disorr”), not to mentn illegal immigrants, dulent food-stamp recipients, Judge Sotomayor (“a stone-hearted racist and a narcissist”), gay-rights activists, the Congrsnal Black Cc, and, for that matter, our natnal pastime. (“I still n’t believe that this day and age an adult would go to a baseball game,” he says, addg, suggtively, that baseball is very popular Communist Cuba.)</p><p class="paywall">Jt about any news story leads him back to his central this: that lefti are g the world, or tryg to. After a Somali pirate was ptured and brought to New York for trial, he told listeners to expect a backlash: “Some terrorist ont om Milwkee’s Somali muny, my opn, is already sayg, ‘He’s a child! He shouldn’t be judged, already, as a man.’ I haven’t seen Al Sharpton, yet, llg him an environmental warrr. I haven’t seen Jse Jackson sayg, ‘We’ve lked arms; we shall overe.’ But don’t be shocked.” Televisn viewers may still remember Savage’s brief, unhappy tenure on MSNBC, which end after he rpond to a prank ller by sayg, “Oh, you’re one of the sodom. You should only get <em class="small">AIDS</em> and die, you pig.” And earlier this year he found himself at the center of a strange ternatnal cint, after the Brish ernment announced—seemgly out of the blue—that he was on a list of twenty-two “hate promoters” who had recently been banned om enterg the untry. On his show that day, he played “God Save the Queen,” by the Sex Pistols, and said, “The punks had right—there is no future England.”</p><p class="paywall">This punk-rock terlu would not have surprised Savage’s regular listeners, who know him to be, more days than not, a marvello storyteller, a quirky thker, and an rrigible ee-associater. He sometim sounds ls like a polil mentator than like the star of a rivetg and unually vivid one-man play (he equently dumps llers, even sympathetic on, after about a sentence and a half), or a fugive character out of a Philip Roth novel. Savage seems rigned to the fact that the majory of Amerins, cludg many of his own listeners, jt don’t get —jt don’t get <em>him</em>—and never will. He is a permanent rint of the polil wilrns, sendg daily dispatch back to the diseased civilizatn that the rt of ll home.</p><p class="paywall">When Print Obama went to Bra for the G-20 summ, Savage voted a good portn of his show to the dner menu. He sffed at the vegetarian optns (“That mt be the Obama people”), wonred aloud whether a Bakewell tart was “a lady om one of the si streets,” and expound upon his hatred for Irish soda bread, sayg, “I don’t know what the big al is—’s full of butter and cream, yuck. <em>Very</em> high rate of heart attack Ireland.” All this talk about food ma him thk about dner, so he read the menu om a lol seafood rtrant. He took exceptn to the tilapia (“That’s, like, pond-grown—that’s the worst”) and to the oyster shooter (“It sounds like a dirty thg to orr”), and then turned his attentn to the ogs’ legs. It’s you and Teddy. One of you is gonna die anyway. Would you roast him, would you ok him, would you eat him raw?</p><p>Aw, stop , man!</p><p>But your md starts gog there. Somehow, the years of rearch ma him not a chipper health nut but a melancholy fatalist, all too aware that every day brgs wh a new dose of poison for his beleaguered body. “Theoretilly, when I get off the air I should go n, I should walk, I should bicycle, I should do a treadl,” he told his listeners, while lamentg that he never followed his own advice. He offered a synopsis of the night before: “The worst thg you uld do is go to dner. I went to dner. The send-worst thg you uld do is have two drks. I had two beers. The third-worst thg you uld do is e right home and watch televisn. I me right home and watched televisn. I didn’t sleep a mute last night. One nightmare after another.” He sighed. “I’ll do the same thg aga tonight.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">To an observer who lacks Savage’s exquise irrabily, his daily route might not seem so bad. He rerds two or three hours of live rad every weekday, startg at 3 <em class="small">P.M.</em>, Pacific Time. (The third hour often clus pretaped mentary, as well as dispatch om polilly nsonant rrponnts.) Savage ctomarily works om a home stud, or a few of them; he lik to remd listeners that he liv and works three or four “hidn lotns.” His ma llaborator is his executive producer, Beowulf Rochlen, who is based Oregon—also the home of Talk Rad Network, which syndit Savage’s show. Bee he worri about hearg loss, Savage ref to e headphon, so he munit wh Rochlen only durg breaks, or by means of bsque stctns and admonns, livered on the air. At the synditor’s sistence, the show is broadst wh a thirty-send lay, so that particularly flammatory ments n be expunged. Savage lik to talk about his love of jazz, Cuban mic, and early rock and roll, but he begs each hour wh a rhythmic cnch of distorted guars: a llage of riffs om Metalli and Mötley Crüe.</p><p class="paywall">On a Monday afternoon this past sprg, ls than an hour after the live portn of his show had end, Savage weled a gut to one of his hiouts: a betiful, clutter-ee ltle hoe overlookg San Francis Bay. He was wearg wi-legged len troers, sandals, and a short-sleeved shirt prted wh palm tre. As part of his trag herbal medice, Savage did botanil rearch Fiji, the neteen-seventi, and he still looks a b like the field rearcher he ed to be. An oil patg the livg room showed the rad host as a young botanist, wh a full beard, holdg his left hand the dark, kidney-shaped u of the <em>Degeneria viensis</em> plant. It was a bright, unseasonably hot day, and he was stalled on the back ck, wh Teddy, who seemed to be enjoyg the heat more than Savage was. An assistant brought out a ld bottle of Beck’s beer, two glass, and a bowl of salted peanuts.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">On his rad show that afternoon, Savage had played tracks by Cannonball Adrley and John Coltrane, and he sought to draw a le nnectg the mic he loved as a boy, the herbal medice he practiced as a young man, and the polil philosophy he advot now: each se, he said, he was after a kd of eedom, and he said that was the big-ernment liberals who had abandoned eedom and, a broar sense, abandoned him. But succsful rabble-rog requir a certa kd of optimism—a belief that, sooner or later, your patrts will e to their sens. And part of what mak his rad show so engrossg is s unrcurrent of psimism: Savage never que seems able to nvce himself that the forc of righteons will prevail; ed, he often giv voice to a sneakg spicn that don’t much matter. Stg on his ck, he cheerfully admted as much. “I watch shows where they’re diggg up a mummy om four thoand years ago, botherg a tomb,” he said. “That person shaved, bshed his teeth wh a stick, took a sh, got laid, whatever. And now what? Who the fuck knows what his polics were?” Across the Bay was the Chevron Richmond Refery, half hidn between the hills and the ast. “If a terrorist blew up, ’d be the equivalent of ten nuclear bombs,” he said. “I sometim s here and thk about the fireball.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Bee of his antipathy for liberals and his cendiary style, Savage is sometim seen as an heir to inic rad provotrs of an earlier era, like Father Coughl, who emerged durg the Great Deprsn as an outspoken cric of both palist excs and the Communist menace (he later beme a more margal figure, railg agast “Jewish bankers”), and Bob Grant, whose tic broadsts ma him a star the neteen-seventi. But when Savage talks about his chief fluenc he is most likely to mentn the old-timers he listened to as a kid New York: Symphony Sid, the beloved jazz d.j.; Mel Allen, the old Yanke play-by-play man; Jean Shepherd, the pneerg monologuist. From that perspective, Savage might be merely the latt—and probably one of the last— a long le of garlo old-school New York rad personali. (His sensibily isn’t so far removed om that of Howard Stern, another Jewish kid om New York wh a rad show that thriv on provotn and nrosis. But Savage dismiss Stern as both a “sophomoric sensatnalist” and—maybe more damagg—a Long Islanr.) The form of Savage’s show—the quick cuts om one topic to another, the way faiar polil observatns give rise to bafflg digrsns, the fluctuatg tensn between his blue-state life and his red-state msage—is at least as important as s ntent, which means that ’s hard to unrstand him, and his appeal, at send hand. The immorate quot meticuloly talogued by the liberal media-watchdog se are accurate but misleadg, sofar as they rce a willfully erratic broadst to a seri of polil brickbats. (Savage lls him John McShame, and often suggts, nspiratorially, that he didn’t really want to beat Obama. “McCa may as well be a fall guy for the new world orr,” he said.) He told listeners, “You’ll have to go to one of the other talk-show hosts to get ‘Obama’s a Ma-a-arxist’ and ‘McCa is a wa-a-ar hero,’ ” addg, wh a trace of self-py, “I really don’t re about anymore.” What he really did re to talk about, more days than not, was his new book, “Psychologil Nudy: Savage Rad Stori.” He published himself, and sce last October he has been sellg onle, through his Web se. “Psychologil Nudy” is sentially a seri of transcripts of his broadsts, but this book is more sttershot than s precsors, more anarchic. There are seventy-five short chapters full of te (or tish) stori; one is only two paragraphs long, and is lled “Savage Liked Art Gra School and Hubris Adults.” It is by far the bt book of his reer, partly bee ’s the least booklike, and partly bee unrsr the perverse streak that is among his most appealg quali. (“It’s, like, a Brish thg,” he said. “People had nothg to do wh themselv after they pillaged the loni.”) He wonred if was gog to ra San Francis, then stopped himself, sayg, “I’m not supposed to talk about weather. It’s one of the l of a natnal show, is you n’t talk about anythg fun.” That ma him thk about global warmg (“global bull,” he lled ), and the fate of the lol salmon, and of salmon general. “It’s gotta swim all the way back, three years later, so n shoot s sperm on the egg and die,” he said. “What a way to live! I gus that’s why the French ll the <em>pete mort</em>.” That, turn, remd him of a “crazy” woman he knew as a child, who was seized by a kd of existential panic: “She took people’s hands, even children, and she’d say, ‘Tell me, why are we born if we have to die? Why did God give me children if they’re gonna die one day?’ ” Like most of his stori, this one didn’t really have an endg. “There’s no answer to ,” he said. “That’s why we’re focsed on polics—to make believe that we don’t re about the eternal qutns. This way, we n get mad at the Republins, or Nixon—you n say Nixon did . Or you n hate the Democrats, that they did . You don’t have to face your own problems.” He chuckled, as if he had jt remembered that lns of people were listeng. “You unrstand this?”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Savage was born Michael Alan Weer, 1942, the son of Jewish immigrants, and, like many succsful men who started off poor, he lov to talk about the bad old days. His father ran an antique shop on Ludlow Street, on Manhattan’s Lower East Si, and he put his son to work the basement, cleang bronze statu wh a toothbsh dipped a cyani solutn. Apparently, Savage’s father believed the sort of tough love that rembl love only retrospect. “It was like an Abraham and Isaac relatnship,” he wr, “Psychologil Nudy,” addg, “I thk if he had the rock and knife I wouldn’t be here today.” (Later the book, he par Abraham to an “Islamo-fascist.”) His mother took re of Michael and, for a time, his younger brother, Jerome, who was “born bld and af and unable to hold himself up,” Savage’s words. On the advice of a doctor, Jerome was stutnalized—“packed off like an animal to live and suffer and die silence, alone one New York snake p after another.”</p><p class="paywall">Although his father tolerated no discsn of relig fah, Savage was raised a thoroughly Jewish world, and he still wc when he rells the time he ma his sports r backfire ont of the synagogue durg Yom Kippur servic. (“I mocked my own people and my own relign,” he says now.) Bee he is a polil ally of evangelil Christians, and bee he has changed his name, he is sometim acced of verg up his Jewish roots, or implicly renouncg them. And so when he noticed that the staff at a lol Italian rtrant was “nety-ne per cent Hispanic people” he was spired to suggt (on the air, not the rtrant) the kd of polil promise he ually abhors: “You clean out the thirty per cent of illegal aliens who nstute our prison populatn, you get rid of the bums on welfare, you cut off ee medil re, and I’ll tell you what, then you n give everyone else cizenship, as far as I’m ncerned.”</p><p class="paywall">In 1963, Savage graduated om Queens College wh a gree blogy and no particular fondns for nservatism. (“Took me a lifetime to figure out I was brawashed school,” he says.) He worked briefly as a social worker, and he now says that the job tght him to loathe the welfare state; he beme somethg of a wanrer, and a nnoissr of the unterculture. In New York, he vised Timothy Leary’s Millbrook tate; after he moved to Hawaii, he persuad Allen Gsberg and Lawrence Ferlghetti to e and give a readg. Wh his wife, Ja Weer, he settled the Bay Area 1974, and he spent years mung wh the lol beats and hipsters, members of a radil ge that he now nsirs a symptom of Ameri’s sickns—and, maybe, the sickns that almost claimed him. He has lled Ferlghetti a “jealo ltle man,” and he has said that Gsberg was “the fuckg vil.” In “The Savage Natn,” he celebrat the ath of an unnamed “beatnik” poet— fact, ’s Gregory Corso—whom he lls “one of the blights of the human race.”</p><p class="paywall">Even as he was rejectg one unterculture, he was immersg himself another. In Hawaii, he began his transformatn to one of the natn’s foremost herbalists, earng master’s gre anthropology and ethnobotany. He brought his wife along on his expedns to Fiji, where he llected and analyzed lol medical plants, and 1978 he earned a gree that sounds like somethg om a nservative parody of liberal universy culture: a Ph.D. nutrnal ethnomedice om the Universy of California at Berkeley. As Michael A. He is still annoyed about a 2003 London <em>Tim</em> article that suggted that he would go down history as “an apostle of hatred.” So when he received an e-mail om a journalist askg for an terview he was eply spic.
