ten mut . I’d been pelled by the promise of an unfettable sapphic romance, but a cur wave of dysphoria overwhelmed me when I watched characters Nomi and Amana (Jamie Clayton and Freema Agyeman, rpectively) make love for the first time. I knew Clayton was a transgenr woman, that beg exactly why I wanted to give the show a shot — but my first viewg, I uldn’t immediately tell which one.</p><p>For some reason, perhaps bee I was still very early my transn when the show premiered 2015, I felt a ld shiver of disfort. I knew that moment that I wasn’t ready for <em>Sense8</em> and the world wanted to show me. In retrospect, I’m glad I did. Although <em>Sense8</em> is many ways the Wachowski sisters’ most fg creatn after <em>The Matrix</em>, that’s not entirely a pliment. Now, as the already-ncelled seri prepar to wrap up wh a two and a half-hour fale (butg June 8th on Netflix), and divisns wh the queer muny burn bright durg a pecially-volatile Pri Month, we n learn a lot by refully examg <em>Sense8</em>, where s creators went wrong, and the unnny bety that is Nomana. To the ntrary: though feels dishearteng to have to disavow such large portns of a show that has given birth to a glor queer pairg like Nomi and Amana — a relatnship that, fact, ronat even more strongly wh me given s siary to a romance my own life — we mt regnize s limatns, missteps, and omissns. <em>Sense8</em> is a show that fely wants ps at s Pri celebratns, bee wants to believe that those ps n willgly change, no longer the enforcers of thorarianism. But while we bate whether real-life ps belong at our rporatized Pri march, n we also e together to envisn a future where the police themselv are renred obsolete through the dismantlg of systemic opprsns? Can we nceptualize the seemgly impossible, which Nomi and Amana tell is “a kiss away om realy”?</p><p><em>Sense8</em> says “y,” but don’t want to thk too hard about what to ll that work — the anti-racism, anti-ableism, anti-transmisia, and other important work that mt be done our world for such a culture to take ep root. It is a show perfectly sued for someone like me: a whe trans woman who still holds the seri’ ialized versn of queer siblghood her heart, whose goal is llective liberatn across l of race and genr, who hop she’s found an Amana her own life. But if I want to embody this hope — the Nomana liftyle — I have to also reckon wh the full plexy of inty, and how val is to prehend and rpect differenc rather than attemptg to bte-force them to irrelevance. <em>Sense8</em> challeng to image a different, more nnected world, but also asks not to “see race.” In realy, we need a world that’s nnected enough to see and <em>celebrate</em> our smallt differenc.</p><p>The path forward is not ercively labells, nor slavishly voted to hierarchi of opprsn. It will require to move beyond the jtic of the past, but will also require to name and remember them so that we do not repeat our most terrible mistak. Simply put, we mt fd that sublime balance where uny do not preclu difference, nor difference uny. When I look through Nomi and Amana’s ey, I n tch a glimpse of that future of rabow strapons and radil love — and for all of the ways which <em>Sense8</em> failed, I’ll still pray every sgle day for
