(Max Lark/WBUR)</figptn></figure></sectn><sectn class="article-sectn--ntent hang-punctuatn article-sectn--first article-sectn--centered"><p class="">Gordon College Wenham — one of the natn's flagship evangelil lleg and perhaps the only one New England — is at a crossroads.</p><p class="">Though officials say the llege is not acute fancial distrs, Gordon is <a href=">enterg a new chapter</a> by re-envisng s amics, <a href=">cuttg majors and elimatg faculty and staff</a>.</p><p class="">The llege has said the chang are signed to allow to adjt to changg tim while remag "mted to the liberal arts and anchored Christ." But some stunts and alumni say the llege is also facg a spirual inty crisis — one n't rolve wh tighter budgets.</p><p class="">Though most of New England's small lleg once had explic ti to Christian fah, today Gordon is a rary the regn. All throughout the school's 127th mencement Saturday, speakers voked God as they spoke to the assembled stunts and their fai.</p><p class="">In his addrs, llege Print D. Michael Ldsay thanked God for those stunts and asked that they monstrate their own gratu.</p><p class="nt-medium">"Graduat, as you walk across the stage, I hope you will e the very few short steps as an opportuny to whisper a prayer to God that says you're willg to reach for whatever is that he has store for you," he said.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="(Max Lark/WBUR)" loadg="lazy"/></picture></a><figptn class="article-fig-ptn">Gordon College, like siar Christian schools, has stggled to attract admted stunts to s mp. In 2017, only 16% of the 2,500 stunts admted end up enrollg — and every year, the llege watch, on average, as one seven of s stunts leave mp.</p><p class="">The llege isn't fancial ee-fall. But the enrollment issue is a ser dilemma — and there are petg explanatns for . Rick Sweeney, the llege's vice print of external affairs, said clg yield and "flatteng enrollment" down to the earthlit reason of all: the st.</p><p class="nt-medium">"We have a lot of data that shows ... the biggt factor our enrollment is price," Sweeney said. "It's as simple as that.”</p><p class="">Gordon giv nearly all of s stunts scholarships. Still, wh an average price of almost $31,000 a year, 's 14% more expensive than Virgia's Liberty Universy — the risg juggernt evangelil higher tn.</p><p class="">The school is also makg cuts. Eight standalone majors will be cut and nsolidated, and 11 faculty members and several staff are beg laid off. In total, 6.5% of the llege's workforce will go.</p><p class="">The termated profsors e mostly om the humani, particularly history and soclogy. (Max Lark/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">For some new graduat, though, feels a b more dramatic than that.</p><p class="">Graduated senr Shae Lee said was soclogy that she discsed some of biggt problems of society — misogyny, racism, poverty — and the ocsnal failur of Christians to nont them. Lee said qutns about the subjects were difficult to ask on an evangelil mp, but was worth . It ma her a better Christian, she said.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We brg up the qutns, and we fight wh , and we stggle wh the answers, and ’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, how else do you grow?’ ” Lee.</p><p class="">Lee has had to learn to stggle wh ntradictns durg her time at Gordon. She intifi as queer. At mencement, one rner of her mortarboard p was rated wh a ty rabow ribbon.</p><p class="">Yet, cg Scripture, school policy <a href=">forbids</a> what lls “homosexual practice … on or off mp" — addn to drkg, profany and premaral sex.</p></sectn><sectn class="article-sectn--ntent hang-punctuatn article-sectn--island"><blockquote class="article-pullquote"><p class="article-pullquote-text">"They're gettg rid of all of the faculty that make the school what is."</p><ce class="article-pullquote-attributn">Rebekah Rodrigu, recent graduate of Gordon College</ce></blockquote></sectn><sectn class="article-sectn--ntent hang-punctuatn article-sectn--centered"><p class="">There are pockets of tolerance on mp, Lee said, and the soclogy partment was one of them. She me out to profsors only a month before graduatn.</p><p class="nt-medium">"It's jt, like, so sual, and 's not a big al. It's really not!" she said. "But is here."</p><p class="">Two of Lee's favore profsors were among those laid off this week: Daniel Johnson and Margie DeWee-Boyd. The partments and programs that are gettg cut are nveniently on that have been more champns of stunts on the margs," she said.</p><p class="">Rodrigu pots the fger at Print Ldsay, who ma headl 2014 when <a href=">he signed a letter</a> askg the Obama admistratn to allow relig stutns like Gordon to make hirg cisns on the basis of sexual orientatn.</p><p class="">In Rodrigu' view, Ldsay — and the dogmatic Christiany he reprents — are Gordon's ma problems. She told Lee and other iends, "I did not shake the print's hand when I got my diploma, which I feel good about!"</p><p class="">Sweeney said he has heard mors that there was a polil element to the layoffs, but that they’re jt not te. The cuts were ma, he said, through a muny procs, “ a very ground-up way, based on the data and choic that we had to make. It wasn't tend, certaly, to isolate areas or dividuals.”</p><p class="">That said, Sweeney add, he expects the llege's nduct l to rema place.</p><p class="">Onle, many alumni and well-wishers read the cuts at Gordon as a bad omen for the enterprise of tolerant, thoughtful, Christian liberal arts Ameri.</p><p class="">Historian John Fea <a href=">wrote</a> of his sadns rponse to the cuts at Gordon. For him, they reprented a turn away om a natural nex of fah and learng. Unlike Gordon, 's growg fast, enrollg 10 tim as many stunts now as did the year 2000, wh the vast majory studyg onle. It's also explicly polil, aligned wh the Tmp admistratn and the Natnal Rifle Associatn. (Vice Print Mike Pence <a href=">spoke</a> at Liberty's mencement jt last week.)</p><p class="">By now, Fea said he fears that Liberty's polil brand may be a posive draw for Christians growg up today.</p><p class="nt-medium">"They don't offer any kd of more nuanced, tellectually reflective view on the Christian's relatnship wh the world," he said. "I mean, 's a culture-war school.”</p><p class="">It is an awkward moment for small lleg tasked wh balancg budgets and signg curricula that are attractive and appealg to future stunts.</p><p class="">Gordon has those problems, to be sure, but has another problem too: tryg to teach liberal arts to young men and women — wh rtls hearts, mds and nscienc — and at the same time, meet the nservative mands of s fah.</p><p class=""><em><strong>Correctn: </strong></em><em>An earlier versn of this story misspelled Print Ldsay's last name.
