has-dropp__lead-standard-headg">Last month, Jon Stewart clared that he would be leavg “The Daily Show,” after sixteen years. One of many wrers who paid him tribute was Oliver Morrison, <em>The Atlantic</em>, who ed the opportuny to <a href=">nsir</a> the relatnship between edy and iology. Stewart’s former lleague, Stephen Colbert, once <a href=">joked</a> that “realy has a well-known liberal bias.” Morrison wonred whether polil satire, too, might have a liberal bias. He noted that liberal humor would live on, thanks to programs such as “Last Week Tonight Wh John Oliver,” on HBO. But he uldn’t intify an equivalent tradn on the other si of the polil spectm. “Why,” he asked, “hasn’t a nservative <em>Daily Show</em> found s own place on Fox?”</p><p class="paywall">It wasn’t clear whether Morrison meant to refer to the Fox Broadstg Company, which isn’t known for polics, or to Fox News, which isn’t known for edy. (Why uldn’t a nservative edy show air on Comedy Central, the ostensibly nonpartisan work that broadsts “The Daily Show”?) But for more than eight years, Fox News has been broadstg a 3 A.M. program lled “Red Eye,” an odd and often funny late-night show that is not exactly satire, and not exactly anythg else, eher. Its sensibily is snarky and surreal, thanks to s host, Greg Gutfeld, a former magaze edor who adopts a tone of half-sarstic alarm, as if he n’t ci which is more annoyg: the polician he is talkg about, or the fact that he has to talk about policians. It sounds like fat praise to ll “Red Eye” the funnit and most unpredictable program on ble news, but that’s what is—or, rather, that’s what was.</p><p class="paywall">Last week, Gutfeld <a href=">announced</a> that he, like Stewart, would be leavg late night— his se, to velop a new weekend program for Fox News. (“Red Eye” will ntue, wh a different host.) In his article, Morrison discsed Gutfeld a dismissive paragraph, judgg that his humor was often “hackneyed,” and “far . . . om workg prime time.” In fact, Gutfeld is a faiar prence on the work’s two hight-rated programs: he is a regular member of the panel on “The Five,” an afternoon talk show, and a gut and ocsnal gut host for Bill O’Reilly, at eight. Somehow, Gutfeld—the proprietor of a program whose ntued existence once seemed like both a secret and a mystery—has bee one of the most proment fac on Fox News.</p><p class="paywall">From the begng, “Red Eye” was cheerfully repetive, fdg humor a seri of nng gags. Gutfeld liked to troduce guts wh absurd, sexually suggtive hypothetils that were meant to be flatterg. (On <a href=">Greg Proops</a>, the edian: “If hilary were a telethon, I’d do him ont of a bunch of sick kids.”) For a time, Andy Levy served as the show’s pky “ombudsman,” liverg persnickety or off-topic rrectns durg a “halftime report” the middle of the show. “You said we need to weaponize space,” Levy <a href=">told</a> Gutfeld, one night, adpan. “Actually, the <a href=">Outer Space Treaty of 1967</a> prohibs the U.S. or any other signatory natn om stallg any kd of n or weapons of mass stctn space, and lims the e of the moon and other celtial bodi to purely peaceful reasons.”</p><p class="paywall">Sometim, Gutfeld tweaked ble-news nventns, as when he purported to addrs bankg reform by <a href=">nveng a sixteen-person panel of experts</a>, cludg faiar Fox News personali such as John Bolton, and markedly unfaiar on, such as Rosie O’Donnell. As he troduced them, they appeared (or seemed to appear) live, formg a four-by-four matrix of pund rndancy—by which pot was time, of urse, for Gutfeld to thank them all, by name, and then end the segment. The head of the Canadian land forc had <a href=">said</a> that the Army might need “a short operatnal break” lastg “at least one year” followg s engagement Afghanistan. Gutfeld had <a href=">wonred</a> whether this might not be “the perfect time to va this ridiculo untry,” addg, “The Canadian ary wants to take a breather, to do some yoga, pat landsp, n on the beach geo whe Capri pants.” Gutfeld probably regretted offendg Canadian troops and their fay members, but he was probably also pleased that his biggt sndal volved the phrase “geo whe Capri pants.”</p><p class="paywall">For all his seemg clumss, Gutfeld had a remarkable knack for sayg ridiculo thgs whout gettg himself fired. (When one gut, a mician, set his electric guar ablaze, Gutfeld was aaid that he might face punishment; he nclud, when no punishment me, that none of the executiv stayed up late enough to watch his show.) On Friday night, durg his fal broadst, he revised some favore old segments, cludg an excellent clip of Mick Foley, the former profsnal wrtler, mistakg Chris Barron, a -founr of the gay nservative group GOProud, for Chris Barron, the lead sger of the Sp Doctors. (“I looked you up, man,” said Foley, soundg embarrassed but also disappoted—he had prepared a zger about “<a href=">Ltle Miss Can’t Be Wrong</a>.”) “I dare you to fd one borg moment,” Gutfeld said, soundg uncharacteristilly earnt. “Excludg this one.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Durg that fal broadst, Gutfeld also paid fond tribute to one of his favore guts: Dave Brockie, (slightly) better known as Os Ung, the lead sger of the stumed metal band Gwar, who was named the program’s Interplaary Corrponnt. He appeared his ual alien-Vikg-burn-victim outf, dispensg jolly but arse mentary on matters havg nothg to do wh the issu of the day. In one episo, Gutfeld acced him of harborg anti-Earth bias. “Oh, I spise —but I love at the same time,” Os said. “See, Earth is the only place the galaxy that has crack.”</p><p class="paywall">Gutfeld remembered the time he told Brockie that “Red Eye” would have to rema Os-ee for a few weeks: “I said, ‘Look, bee of what you did at one of your shows, I’m gettg a lot of letters. Can I jt not have you on for, like, a month or six weeks, and then people will jt fet, and I’ll have you back on?’” Gutfeld didn’t specify what Gwar had done wrong, but he might have been referrg to the fact that the band had <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">pretend to disembowel Sarah Pal</a>. Brockie took the news lmly, but then <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">announced</a>, on Twter, that Pal had gotten him “nned.” Later, an <a href=">onle terview</a>, Brockie talked about his tenure on Gutfeld’s show. “It was a nseatg gig, anyway” he said. “But I did , bee ’s Os ont of twenty ln people every night.”</p><p class="paywall">No doubt Gutfeld would beg to differ. He might nce that his “Red Eye” was often “nseatg”—not to mentn ane, ramshackle, mdlsly sarstic, sneakily smart, patently absurd, and generally rehg. But he would be quick to pot out that the show never had anythg like twenty ln viewers. <a href=">Last month</a>, for stance, “Red Eye” was watched by an average of three hundred and thirty-ne thoand somniacs, cludg a hundred and thirty-seven thoand the key mographic of viewers between twenty-five and fifty-four years old. And while nventnal ble news shows work hard to mata a tone of urgency, “Red Eye” was often unapologetilly slack: the joke was that Gutfeld and his guts had nothg better to do—and neher, apparently, did you, the viewer. Wh any luck, he will ntue to brg that puncturg sensibily to the rt of the work. In the meantime, ’s worth psg to give him cred for creatg a show so ridiculo that uld make everythg around seem ridiculo, too. After Gutfeld’s fal “Red Eye” broadst, the small hours of Saturday morng, the work cut to mercial, and then moved swiftly to the next show: a rebroadst of that eveng’s “Kelly File,” wh Shannon Bream as the gut host. She began wh a breathls monologue: “Breakg tonight! The first big tt for the 2016 Printial hopefuls is unr way!
