John Pl was the first bloom of his pontifite, and his image as a young, strong, pennt-md world cizen had been burnished by a vis to New York the prev fall. Warhol was hopg to p a seri of silk-screen celebry portras wh the Polish pontiff. Warhol and his associate Fred Hugh arrived Rome thkg they had a private dience, only to fd that their tickets were for the weekly general dience. In his <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">diary</a>, Warhol relled the event: “They fally took to our seats wh the rt of the 5,000 people and a nun screamed out, ‘You’re Andy Warhol! Can I have your tograph?’ . . . Then I had to sign five more tographs for other nuns. And I jt get so nervo at church.” He was the ont row, a V.I.P. after all. “And then the pope me out, he was on a gold r, he did the rounds, and then fally he got up and gave a speech agast divorce seven different languag. . . . That took three hours.”</p><p class="paywall">When the service was fished, John Pl went down to the crowd assembled outsi the basili, trailed by photographers, and moved along the ont row. At last, he reached Warhol. In the photographs, the two men are facg each other. John Pl is drsed all whe, tan and strong of jaw. Warhol has on a whe drs shirt, a striped tie, and an olive down jacket, and he’s holdg a mera. His sk has more lor than ual; beneath his wig, there’s gray hair tuftg out over the clear am of his eyeglass. He’s sg. He looks like an ordary person—jt another pilgrim to Rome. Warhol extends his right hand and John Pl tak his left. “I didn’t kiss his hand. . . . The mobs behd were jumpg down om their seats, was sry,” Warhol wr. He wasn’t ever able to make a silk-screen portra of John Pl, but he did get a good photograph of the Pope that day. It is classilly posed: vertil, black-and-whe, wh the sooty St. Peter’s lonna as a background and the Pope juttg to the ame wh his right arm and hand extend toward the viewer—a gture ak to those of some of the sats atop the lonnas—so that John Pl’s ey and the papal rg are the two fol pots. It’s a photograph that uld have appeared <em>Time</em> or on a postrd.</p><p class="paywall">That photograph is on view toward the end of “Andy Warhol: Revelatn,” <a href=">an exhibn</a> at the Brooklyn Mm, and v the ma qutn raised by Warhol’s work that relig imagery: What did Warhol make of all this stuff? It’s the qutn that people have asked about all his work sce the begng. Born Ptsburgh, 1928, and baptized Andrew Warhola, he grew up a close-kn muny of immigrants om Ruthenia, near Poland’s southern borr. As a boy, he spent Sunday morngs gazg at Christ, the Virg Mary, and the sats the St. John Chrysostom Byzante Catholic Church, a ngregatn that followed the Byzante re—the prit hidn behd a wall of ins and ntg Old Church Slavonic—and he gaed a relig sense of the power of imag. Relig imagery was proment at home, too. His mother, Julia, ma pen-and-k drawgs of angels; a reproductn of Leonardo da Vci’s “The Last Supper” hung the hall. (“When you passed ,” he said, “you ma a sign of the cross.”) A waterlor of the livg room that he pated while he was a stunt at the Carnegie Instute of Technology shows a ccifix on the mantel—the ccifix that had been placed atop the sket of his father, Andrej.</p><p class="paywall">As a young artist New York Cy, Warhol mataed relig habs (noted Blake Gopnik’s recent bgraphy), whose full signifince is hard to make out. He went to church termtently, on his own or wh his mother, who moved wh him 1952. He drew Christmas rds for Tiffany’s. When Pope Pl VI vised New York and the Uned Natns October, 1965, Warhol marvelled at how the motor (“I mean . . . <em>the</em> Pope!”) went right past Warhol’s Manhattan stud, the Factory, on East Forty-seventh Street. The acunt of Pl VI’s vis Warhol’s book “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Popism</a>” prents the pontiff as an exemplar of Pop art’s bold style, om the distillatn of Pl’s msage at the Uned Natns (“sentially he said, ‘Peace, disarmament, and no birth ntrol’ ”) to s summary of Pl’s prs nference: “When the reporters asked him what he liked bt about New York, [the Pope said] ‘Tutti buoni’ (‘Everythg is good’) which was the Pop philosophy exactly.”</p><p class="paywall">By ’s end, Warhol would be dubbed the Pope of Pop, and among the imag that gaed him fame were those wh relig associatns. The “Mona Lisa” seri was ma 1963 after the Metropolan Mm of Art—wh the First Lady Jackie Kennedy’s tercsn—brought da Vci’s “Mona Lisa” om the Louvre to New York. Warhol’s “Jackie” seri, om the next year, renred Jackie Kennedy as a figure out of a pietà—like the one by Michelangelo on view at the 1964 World’s Fair Queens—wearg the veil she wore to the funeral for her hband. And, 1967, at the height of his fame, Warhol accepted a missn om the Menil fay, on behalf of the Catholic Church, and created a seri of films tled “Sunrise/Sunset” for the Vatin paviln at the World’s Fair San Anton. The paviln was never built, but one work the ltle-known seri—a long-form vio of a sunset over the Pacific—is on display Brooklyn, wh a voice-over by Ni, the chantse who played a role the Velvet Unrground. “Sunrise/Sunset” has been terpreted as a Pop unterpart to the Rothko Chapel Hoton, missned by the Menils the same perd, as a “spirual” gture toward transcennce.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">In June, 1968, Warhol was shot pot-blank at the Factory (the ont page of the next morng’s <em>Daily News</em> is the exhib), and he spent two months the hospal reverg. The shootg was a turng pot his life, and his relig life. Havg survived, he ma a vow to go to church on Sundays, and the years that followed he kept the vow, his way—duckg to the Church of St. Vcent Ferrer, on Lexgton Avenue, near his town hoe, “for five mut,” before bbg to the Chelsea flea market. Havg unrgone surgery to remove the bullet, he rried the srs, which served as remrs that he was not an in—he was a man wh a body.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Two of the most powerful imag the Brooklyn show velop that pot unr the bric “The Catholic Body.” One is a photograph of Warhol by Richard Avedon, taken Augt, 1969. At the same time, he ma relig-themed art of all kds. He ma nvas of skulls and large semi-abstract cross. He drsed dolls as prits and nuns, and photographed them. He engaged new mothers to s for photographs while they nursed their babi, and om one set of photographs he produced drawgs lled the “Morn Madonna” seri. The drawgs evoke Christian imagery directly and whout parody or irony.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">In 1984, the art aler Alexanr Iolas offered Warhol a ln dollars to make new work to be shown Milan, a grand buildg terrnered om the Santa Maria lle Grazie—where Leonardo’s “The Last Supper” was on view. Warhol took the missn, wowed by the fee. There’s a set of ten punchg bags, each emblazoned wh the doleful face of Christ and overwrten wh the word “JUDGE” sbro letters by Jean-Michel Basquiat. There’s a pair of whe Converse high-tops featurg a silk-screened image om an ad offerg a J night-light, and nvas screened wh e-to-J flyers. And there are dozens of reactns of the image of Christ at table wh the discipl: the face of Christ, the hand of Judas, and so on. Of the, one is pecially strikg. It’s tagged as “Be a Somebody wh a Body” (1985-86), and, , several streams of imagery nverge: the face of Christ at the Last Supper, an advertisg tagle, and a stock image of a shirtls young man, beamg as he shows off the robt physique that an exercise regimen has gaed him.</p><p class="paywall">This work is at once relig and topil. At the time Warhol ma , he was a gay man at the center of a Manhattan art-and-fashn scene ravaged by <em class="small">AIDS</em>. Robert Mapplethorpe, Sam Wagstaff, Perry Ellis, Alexanr Iolas—all had been stck by the disease. So had Jon Gould, a Paramount Pictur executive, wh whom Warhol had rried on an tense love affair; so had Mart Burgoyne, a young artist (and oime roommate of Madonna’s) whom Warhol had e to know. As the scholar and curator Jsi Beck has poted out, Warhol executed the “Last Supper” seri at a moment when <em class="small">AIDS</em> was the headl, wh Christian lears—fundamentalist Prottant evangelists and Roman Catholic bishops particular—nouncg gay life harsh and cel terms, the Reverend Jerry Falwell, for stance, clarg that <em class="small">AIDS</em> was God’s way of punishg gay men for their sful behavr.</p><p class="paywall">“Be a Somebody wh a Body” addrsed the ntroversi surroundg <em class="small">AIDS</em> obliquely. At the Last Supper, Christians believe, Christ stuted the sacrament of the Eucharist—makg the bread and we of the meal his body and blood, which he urged the discipl to eat and drk “ remembrance of me.” Wh this work, then, Warhol aligned the body of Christ and the male body, then unr siege om the <em class="small">AIDS</em> vis and om the Catholic hierarchy. And, wh the larger “Last Supper” works, Warhol ma the gatherg of the discipl an analogue for the gathergs of gay men who me together the knowledge that the iends they broke bread wh might be prent for the last time.</p><p class="paywall">Two of those horizontal, nearly life-size “Last Suppers” are mounted oppose each other toward the end of the exhibn. One is pk; the other is yellow. Each is a double: two sets of the twelve apostl, actn, flankg Christ, whose ey are downst—the rare Warhol protagonist who don’t face the viewer. This Christ, seen so often reproductn, is faiar rather than inic, and, s faiary, nveys the qualy that Warhol ced early on as a key to his work: the “prence” he saw and felt imag, whether exalted or ordary. The “Last Suppers” are not, themselv, ntroversial; they are not, themselv, relig. They are what I would ll crypto-relig—work which the qutn of whether and how they are relig is central to their effect.</p><p class="paywall">It’s powerful to see the two works together near the end of the Brooklyn exhibn. For one thg, the “Last Supper” seri turned out to be the last works that Warhol pleted before dyg unexpectedly after surgery for a burst gallbladr, Febary, 1987, and the sle of the pair lends them an advertent faly. For another, they anticipate the crypto-relig art that would follow: Andr Serrano’s “Piss Christ” (a ccifix immersed ure and photographed so that the body of Christ has a yellowish tt), and Chris Ofili’s “The Holy Virg Mary,” featurg a Black Madonna encsted wh elephant dung, among other effects—which was shown at the Brooklyn Mm 1999 and stirred ntroversy, wh Cardal John O’Connor and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani nouncg and gettg wi play the tabloids.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The “Last Suppers” are, at once, matter-of-fact and grand—and, I dare to say, perennial. The most prent-md of artists, Warhol also kept his ey on the prize of postery, and he evintly grasped that the figure of Christ and the art of da Vci had stayg power, which would acce to his treatment of the Gospel scene as the shock effect of his methods subsid.
