It’s technilly the Pearl District but is an easy walk om the Old Town gay Open for takeout and de-. SndalsAt 40 years young, Sndals is among Portland’s longt-nng LGBTQ+ bars and is the last vtige of downtown’s long-gone Vasele Alley gay district.

1999 PORTLAND GAY HISTORY WALKG TOUR

Origally opened by Johnnie Honegger (the owner of the Harbor Club) on June 3, 1965, is nsired one of the first gay bars tablished on Stark. Lanny Swerdlow rells that, the begng months of the Gay Liberatn Front, the bar was targeted for s discrimatory practice of excludg women wearg pants.

The vice reports of 1964 noted that Derek’s Tavern was “equented by homosexuals of higher class and means” and Akerson remembers that Johnny Mathis and ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev ed to equent the bar when dog gigs the cy.

GAY & LBIAN ARCHIV OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWT LGBTQ HISTORY

In the 1950s, when the homophile movement began publishg and distributg perdils such as Mattache Review and ONE magaze, Rich’s Cigar Store, which had been existence sce at least 1916, was the only newspaper/magaze stand the cy that would rry them. It might seem odd to honor a magaze stand as a signifint place our liberatn, but very few homosexuals would allow themselv to have such materials mailed to their hom those days.

In December 1906, Kse purchased the elegant Louvre and turned to a “gay ’90s equivalent” of morn nightclubs and a “Bohemian” place (newspaper story’s terms).

This lotn (first reference to the theater is the Oregonian 1908) is mentned repeatedly as one of the most noteworthy gay male cisg s Portland history. Rearchers have documented at least three long-term gay upl who met the balny of this theater the 1950s and whose relatnships lasted over thirty years. The manager of the gallery was John Wilkson, the father of Portland Gay Liberatn, who lled the first meetg of the Portland Gay Liberatn Front on March 10, 1970 at the Centenary Wilbur Methodist Church on S.
