The chicken, for stance: n the wars tell them a ltle b about s provenance? Of urse she n, bee this is the kd of ol rtrant Portland, Oregon, where patrons regularly seek elaborate assuranc about the virtuons of their food. The wars rms the uple that the place serv only lol, ee-range, “herage-breed, woodland-raised chicken that’s been fed a diet of sheep’s k, soy, and hazelnuts.” But bee the ders, Peter and Nance, are characters on “Portlandia”—a televisn edy which prec ncerns sp to giddy lunacy—the nversatn do not stop there. Peter, played by Fred Armisen, asks if the hazelnuts, too, are lol. Nance, played by Carrie Brownste, needs to know the size of the parcel of land where the chicken roamed eely. (Four acr.) The wars exc herself and returns to the table wh a file folr and a photograph. “Here is the chicken you’ll be enjoyg tonight,” she says, wh theraptic solemny. “His name was Col.” Peter seems appeased: “He looks like a happy ltle guy who ns around.” But then he wonrs if the animal had “a lot of iends—other chickens as iends?” The wars, who fds this a reasonable qutn, adms, “I don’t know that I n speak to that level of timate knowledge about him.”</p><p class="paywall">“Portlandia,” which débuted last wter, on the Inpennt Film Channel, and returns on January 6th, is the rare sketch-edy seri that has a staed object of satire. It’s about life hipster enclav, and the self-nscns that mak hipsters sperately disavow the label. Many of s characters are ught up the priful culture of D.I.Y. entreprenrship, which people reject office jobs favor of beg, say, an appliqué-pillow signer wh a page on Etsy. (This season, a uple lnch a bs based on the tchphrase “We n pickle that!,” brg everythg om eggs at an urban farm to a broken high heel found on the siwalk.) “Portlandia” is an extend joke about what Frd lled the narcissism of small differenc: the need to distguish onelf by mute shadgs and to sist, wh outsized ancy, on the importance of those shadgs.</p><p class="paywall">Brownste, who is also one of the show’s wrers and producers, told me, “In general, thgs a place like Portland are really great, so ltle ncerns bee ridiculo. There are a lot of people here who n afford—fancially but also psychologilly—to be really, really ncerned about buyg lol, for stance. It be mock epic. It’s like Alexanr Pope’s ‘Rape of the Lock.’ I was standg le at Whole Foods, and the guy ont of me says, ‘I really wish you guys sold lolly ma h pasta.’ And the shier says, ‘Look, we do.’ And the guy says, ‘No, no—that’s om Seattle.’ Really? You don’t have a bigger battle?”</p><p class="paywall">“Portlandia” prents a heightened versn of the cy’s twee urbany: a pany sells artisanal light bulbs, a hotel offers a manual typewrer to every gut, and a big lol event is the Allergy Pri Para. The mayor, played by Kyle MacLachlan, be an object of sndal when he’s “outed” as the bass guarist a middle-of-the-road reggae band. (The real Portland’s mayor, Sam Adams, who is openly gay, plays MacLachlan’s assistant on the show.) Armisen and Brownste, wearg anthropologilly precise wigs and outfs, portray most of the ma characters: bicycle-rights activists, dumpster divers, mpaigners agast any theoretil attempt to brg the Olympics to Portland, animal lovers so out of touch that they ee a pet dog tied up outsi a rtrant. (“Who puts their dog on a pole like a stripper?”) Many characters recur, and, bee they often seem to know one another, their tersectns om sketch to sketch give the show the feel of a grownup “Same Street.” This childlike vibe has an edge to , however; as an Armisen character explas at one pot, Portland is “where young people go to retire.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Armisen, who is forty-five, is a seasoned ic actor who has been the st of “Saturday Night Live” sce 2002, but Brownste’s volvement “Portlandia” is surprisg. She had never done edy before llaboratg wh Armisen, and, many ways, she is the epome of the die culture that the show sends up. For twelve years, Brownste, now thirty-seven, was a guarist and sger Sleater-Kney, a three-woman band om Olympia, Washgton. Sleater-Kney drew on the rt-grrrl sound but transcend ; the band’s energy was raw and punky, s vols hntg and s lyrics vehement. In 2001, the cric Greil Marc named Sleater-Kney the bt rock band Ameri, and when went on fe hiat, five years later, the news triggered many end-of-an-era laments. Last year, Brownste started a new band, Wild Flag, wh the dmmer om Sleater-Kney, Ja Weiss, and two other die-rock emenc, Mary Timony and Rebec Cole. The group’s first album, released September, has been wily praised; <em>Rollg Stone</em> said that Wild Flag “mak other bands sound like sniffly rooki.” Urban Outfters sells the rerd, on vyl.</p><p class="paywall">When Brownste plays mic, there is nothg ironic about her. The first time that we sat down to talk, at a rtrant Portland’s loft-filled Pearl District, she said, “I’ve never unrstood people who play up the artifice of mic. Mic, for me, was like a tidal wave. It took me outsi of anythg I’d ever done.” She had been an isolated teen-ager, and punk was “a salvatn,” she said. “You n never unrtimate that moment of somebody explag your life to you, somethg you thought was explible, through mic. That was the way out of lonels.”</p><p class="paywall">Brownste is pete, wh ch-length dark-brown hair and a wi mouth. Offstage, jeans, striped T-shirts, and sneakers, she looks more cute than mandg. Onstage, she projects the primal granur of Iggy Pop. She wrh on the floor, climbs on the kick dm, and wdls her playg arm. She yelps and shouts, and hiccups jt like Joey Ramone. “She brought all that posturg and posg to girl rock, which would be nothg if she didn’t wre great songs and play guar like a mon,” Brendan Canty, the dmmer for the band Fugazi, who is a iend, says. “She was a straight-out-of-the-box rock star.” Sometim this si of Brownste appears on “Portlandia”—when one of her characters needs to eak out, she livers a great howl. But ’s a howl of thwarted entlement. The show is offerg satire, not salvatn.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Brownste lik to say that “Portlandia” is an affectnate portra of the cy where she has lived for the past . The warmth is not the wrg, which leans toward the acerbic, but you n fd other plac, like the show’s dreamy look. In the openg-cred sequence, a chillwave stmental plays over a montage of lh, tree-led streets and saturated neon agast an ky blue sky. It’s a ltle like Woody Allen’s “Manhattan”—the imagery evok a world you’d like to live , even if the people are hard to live wh. The characters “Portlandia” are drsed wh an eye toward regnn, not ridicule. Brownste says that when she puts on the outfs picked for her by the show’s stume signer, Amanda Needham, she feels as if she were “borrowg cloth om someone’s closet.” Needham, who told me that she shops for the “Portlandia” characters year-round, as if they were iends, won an Emmy last year for her signs.</p><p class="paywall">But the most palpable affectn onscreen is that between Armisen and Brownste, who have an unually voted platonic relatnship. They met 2003, when Sleater-Kney was playg New York Cy, and Armisen ved the band to an “S.N.L.” after-party. When Brownste showed up, she found him wearg a Sleater-Kney button wh her picture on . Their paths had probably crossed before: Armisen started out his performg life as the dmmer a Chigo punk band lled Trenchmouth, and he was married for six years to the Brish sger and songwrer Sally Timms, om the Mekons. Brownste says that she and Armisen likely slept on some of the same uch when both were tourg. (“If you were an die band the neti, you slept on a lot of uch.”) After that party New York, Brownste and Armisen began buildg a iendship, but, given that they were livg on oppose asts, they cid that they’d have to work on somethg together. As she put , when you’re not datg somebody, “ begs to seem kd of weird if you’re flyg around the untry to see him.”</p><p class="paywall">It’s easy to see why Armisen and Brownste clicked. Both are hard workers wh ltle tolerance for downtime. Both are mic obssiv, wh an encyclopedic knowledge of B-sis. Neher has children, or seems likely to have any, though they’re sweet to their iends’ kids. They shudr at the thought of beg bter or cynil. Both scribe themselv as havg been difficult, or rtive, romantic relatnships. Armisen was married first to Timms, and then, for ls than a year, to Elizabeth Moss, who plays Peggy Olson on “Mad Men.” Brownste has dated both men and women, and she was once volved wh Cor Tucker, the sger and guarist wh whom she found Sleater-Kney. But she hat tegori like “bisexual,” and has always felt more fed by her work than by her relatnships. “I never thk of sexualy as an intifier,” Brownste wrote an e-mail. “What seems to have fed me more is that I’m pretty horrible at relatnships and haven’t been many long-term on. Leavg and movg on—returng to a faiar sense of self-reliance and tonomy—is what I know; that feelg is as fortable and fortg as might be for a different kd of person to stay.”</p><figure Thkg that an office job might be a good thg to try, she did a six-month stt at Wien+Kennedy—the modish Portland ad agency rponsible for Nike’s “Jt Do It” mpaign. (The agency’s playcentric workplace has been spoofed on “Portlandia.”) But workg at an ad agency proved alienatg, she said, bee of the way “the work mimics art.” She add, “Mic, to me, is an earnt populist enavor and this was a cynil populist one.” Durg that perd, she stopped playg the guar, even at home; felt too sad, like “puttg your weddg rg back on after a divorce.” She spent so much time helpg out at the Oregon Humane Society that she was honored as Volunteer of the Year. Then she remembered how much she liked actg.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">As a child growg up Redmond, Washgton—the Seattle suburb where Microsoft has s headquarters—Brownste loved puttg on plays. The ia of gatherg people the same room, attentive to the same thg, appealed to her, as did the “stagg of small dramas wh a begng, a middle, and an end I uld ntrol.” She was also reactg to an emotnally chaotic hoehold. When Brownste was fourteen, her mother, who was eply unhappy, left the fay—Carrie has a younger sister, who is now a private vtigator Seattle—and has stayed only termtent ntact wh them over the years. Brownste’s father, a rporate lawyer, brought up the girls. Brownste remas fairly close to her father, but was taken aback when, a few years ago, he me out as gay and began livg wh a younger man. Her dad had been a typil suburbane, she said, who “veered a ltle nservative.” He is now “way more liberal, more outgog, he lghs more. It’s like meetg a new person.” Though she has weled this transformatn, “sts doubts on what your own childhood meant.” She said, “It’s kd of hard to thk that that was him a perd of nial. Brownste fell wh the rt-grrrl crowd—bands like Biki Kill, Heavens to Betsy, and Bratmobile—and eventually joed forc wh Tucker, who was two years olr. Though Brownste beme a mician, she didn’t fet actg. “She’d always had this tert ,” Tucker, who remas a close iend, rells. “She had an improv group Olympia. But was like your iend who has this weird hobby. You know—some people are to tras? She was to improv. One of would go to the library and get a book and brg an actg exercise and prent to the class, and then we’d all do . It was the sort of thg that uld never have happened L.A. None of knew anythg and there was no teacher. But I thk Carrie and I both actually kept a lot of that feelg wh the actg we went on to do.”</p><p class="paywall">And then Armisen me along. He did know what he was dog, and he suggted to Brownste that they make some vios for the Inter. They lled their enterprise ThunrAnt and veloped some of the characters and suatns—notably, the femist bookstore—that are now mastays of “Portlandia.” ThunrAnt was somethg they did chiefly for fun, but by the time they had ten fairly polished sketch Armisen thought that they might have a show to pch. In 2010, they signed a al wh Broadway Vio, a pany n by Lorne Michaels, who produc “Saturday Night Live,” and approached IFC, which was lookg to create some edi. Jennifer Caserta, the executive vice-print of IFC, who lnched s current slogan—“Always On. Slightly Off”—says that the channel was “turng to smaller edy clubs, YouTube, and other viral sensatns, lookg for somethg ls polished, eer, maybe more improvisatnal than you would see suatn edi.” IFC took on the show, and “Portlandia” has bee s biggt h, wh an dience of more than five ln. “It was so crystal-clear to Fred and Carrie what the show was,” Michaels says. “It’s their own athetic. Wh ‘S.N.L.,’ between drs and air, there’s a lot of ed work that go to , and earlier, too. I’m all over that. But I wouldn’t send-gus this.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Armisen and Brownste are fascated by how upl teract—the shared referenc and gtur that mark timacy—and sce they often play upl on “Portlandia” they have been able to channel their outsirs’ observatns to characterizatns. “I get to play at nnectg wh people,” Brownste says. “Bee every scene we’re a different relatnship, ’s like I’m learng how to have relatnships om the show.” She has let go of some of her squeamishns about nuzzly upl: “When you’re embodyg the person, you’re not judgg.”</p><p class="paywall">Armisen and Brownste text each other every night before bed. Brownste says of their iendship, “Sometim I thk ’s the most succsful love affair eher of will ever have.” Both claim that wouldn’t work if they were romantilly volved. “It would be lr, bee we’ve both treated our romantic relatnships a ld way,” Armisen says. “Carrie and I are more romantic than any other romantic relatnship I’ve ever had—that sense of anticipatn about seeg the other person, the secret bond. But thgs don’t bee obligatory. I’m not thkg, I’m dog this bee you’re my girliend; I’m jt thkg, I love Carrie.”</p><p class="paywall">Two of the ma characters on “Portlandia” are named Fred and Carrie; they have an ambiguo joed-at-the-hip relatnship. The show’s productn signer, Tyler B. Robson, has proposed that, at some pot, they be shown wakg up the same room, tw beds, wh their nam above them. “It’d be very Bert and Ernie,” Brownste said, addg that if, real life, “Fred said to me, ‘I’m gog to move to your hoe, and sleep the same room, tw beds,’ I’d be, like, ‘Sure!’ ”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">“Portlandia” is shot on lotn all over town, and one sunny weekday morng September the st and crew gathered the back garn of a rtrant lled Casa Naranja. Though the sensibili mocked on the show are equally on display plac like At, Texas, or Williamsburg, Brooklyn, or the Silver Lake neighborhood L.A., the show is anchored by lol Portland, such as Oblique Coffee Roasters, whose Web se featur this self-scriptn: “A super bch’ Victorian Coffee Merntile wh scmtlcent beans micro-roasted an über-German st iron roaster named Bart!” The show diverg om urban realy one key rpect, however: as Jonathan Krisel, the show’s director, lik to say, never ras “Portlandia.” The sunny look giv the seri a honeyed, fantastil ra.</p><p class="paywall">Casa Naranja’s garn is trellised and outfted wh macramé hammocks; patrons who s the hammocks end up awkwardly close to the ground. Brownste, Armisen, and MacLachlan were danglg three of them. In the first season, the characters Fred and Carrie ma iends wh the mayor, a sprightly, outdoorsy guy who holds meetgs stg on his exercise ball so that he n work on his “re.” In the scene about to be filmed, Carrie and the mayor suggt to Fred var ias for a ol, origal date, and he is ristg.</p><p class="paywall">“Portlandia” is a largely improvised show, and the sketch often start out very sketchy ed. Armisen will e to Brownste wh a newspaper clippg about, say, the trend of men kntg. Or they’ll be walkg around Portland and notice that is fashnable there to show off “wild and flowg, fully gray” hair. Then Brownste, who is good at pturg the larger social settg, will start providg the ntext. For the send season, Bill Oakley, a former head wrer for “The Simpsons” who had moved to Portland, has helped out on the show. He says, “I’ve spent a lot of time wrers’ rooms. They’re prsure okers. In most s, they’re heavily male. You work long hours and many of the people them have a really negative view about themselv and life.” The “Portlandia” wrers’ room, however, is llaborative and laid-back. Some meetgs have been held the loft of the director G Van Sant, who has bee iendly wh Brownste. “G’s dog was wanrg and out,” Oakley says. “There was a microbrewery downstairs.”</p><p class="paywall">One reason for the lack of strs is that the wrers don’t have to generate much dialogue—that gets filled durg filmg. Krisel do many tak of a scene, most of which start and end the same way but follow very different paths to get there.</p><p class="paywall">In the garn, the actors idled their hammocks, draggg their to the gravel. They had cid that, the scene, they would ll a wars over and ask her what she thought of one scheme: a “heist” date, which Fred asks somebody out and then smuggl her to the lol drive-. The date would culmate wh Fred and the woman pretendg to rob, or maybe really robbg, the ncsn stand. MacLachlan genially laid out the scenar: “You actually put on a mask and go to the ncsn stand and ms wh them a ltle b.” Wouldn’t the wars enjoy a date like that? Wouldn’t she thk that a guy who proposed was darg and attractive?</p><p class="paywall">The wars was played by Annie Clark, the sger who go by the name St. Vcent. Micians turn up equently gut rol on “Portlandia”—they’re ually iends or acquatanc of Armisen or Brownste. Last season featured Aimee Mann, Cor Tucker, and Col Meloy, of the Decemberists; this year will clu Eddie Vedr, Johnny Marr, of the Smhs, and Steve Jon, of the Sex Pistols.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The tall, willowy Clark played her scene standg up. “How do we look om up there, Annie?” Brownste lled out om her hammock. “Awome? This is <em>such</em> a good angle for most people.”</p><p class="paywall">The clapboard sound, and the scene began a send time. I disvered that Robson, the productn signer, is a lol who driv a retrofted ambulance, where he keeps all his suppli.</p><p class="paywall">The femist bookstore where “Portlandia” films is a real one lled In Other Words. When I vised the place, the employe were nowhere near as humorls as their unterparts on the show, Toni and Candace. (In one sketch, Toni, played by Brownste, reprov a woman who has wrten an appreciative acunt of her boyiend’s sexual technique for the store’s “journalg class.” “I feel like was a brag journal,” Toni says. “And what a journal should be is a document of misery.”) But the store was featurg an art exhib of clay labias, and sold somethg lled a Pee-Zee, a plastic vice that allows women to urate standg up. In the bathroom were posters seekg roommat for group ho, cludg this one: “We are to open and hont munitn, dumpsterg, crafts, mic, raw/livg foods, bikg, natural buildg, permaculture, livg shacks and trailers and all kds of fun stuff like that. We are a vegan hoe, except that some of do dumpster dairy.” (When I mentned this to Brownste, she said, “If I were to dumpster divg, dairy is the last thg I’d dive for.”)</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">That eveng, I spent some time wh Armisen and Brownste at her hoe, the Grant Park neighborhood. She liv a clean and uncluttered Craftsman-style bungalow, wh hardwood floors and arched doorways. Curled up on the sofa and eatg takeout Thai, Brownste was drsed a plaid shirt, jeans, and Converse low-tops, lookg like the tomboy kid sister a movie om the sixti. She has two rcue dogs, a German-wirehair mix named Toby and a hound-boxer mix named Cricket, and they hung out the livg room wh . Brownste had been improvisg dialogue all day, had done a prs nference at lunchtime, and had jt e back om drivg St. Vcent to the airport, but she was as articulate and forthg as ual.</p><p class="paywall">We found ourselv talkg about ambn. Though Brownste had taken full advantage of the rt-grrrl scene, clearly wasn’t a long-term place for her. Brownste loved the way that the movement had eed her to make angry, exuberant mic, and she was grateful for her llaboratn wh Tucker. But she ultimately found life Olympia opprsive: “When you’re doctrated to a scene, there’s this pri that wh beg accepted and unrstood by people you admire. But the flip si of that is this almost stiflg sense of mocracy. You put yourself down, to overpensate for the embarrassment of rich or the ltle attentn you get.” Even worse, she said, was “the élism that pass self off as clivens.” She went on, “The l are so oteric, so hard to follow, that no one else uld f . And what you’ll never adm to yourself is that you don’t <em>want</em> other people to f .” That’s a good summatn of what “Portlandia” lampoons.</p><p class="paywall">When Miranda July tried to expla why she and Brownste had stayed iends sce their rt-grrrl days, she began to say the word “ambn,” but hated. Instead, she said that they shared “a steady foc on what we are gog to do next. We’re always askg each other, ‘What’s the next project?’ And, that beg the throughle our liv, more than relatnships, that be pretty meangful, at a certa pot. Durg the meal, she got a text om Armisen: “You and I are <em>Sp</em> together! Love you!” Brownste sed and said that she appreciated Fred’s unabashed enthiasm for their acplishments. It had taken a while, she said, for her to shed the sense that was unseemly to “take cred for somethg you did. So Fred is so nice, bee he never me om that scene. And ’s not about beg self-aggrandizg. The highlight was “Romance,” Brownste’s irristible anthem to the power of mic: “You watch sg, we sg till we’re cryg / We sg to ee ourselv om the room / We love the sound, the sound is what found / The sound is the love between me and you.” The crowd felt the love and sent roarg back.</p><p class="paywall">The next morng, was pourg, and so wdy that there was no pot openg an umbrella, bee would stantly vert over your head. Brownste, who had stayed at a iend’s apartment the East Village, was tryg, unsuccsfully, to hail a b, so that she uld get to a street rner near the Holland Tunnel, where she had agreed to meet Ja Weiss, the Wild Flag dmmer. Weiss driv one of the two vans that the band tours , and by midday Wild Flag had to be Philalphia, to tape a rad show. Though beg a rpected die band may land you a well-payg gig dog somethg else—a televisn show, say—beg an die band is not, self, a well-payg gig. Tourg n be a grd, and bands mt do more of now, to make up for the loss album sal attributable to downloadg.</p><p class="paywall">Brownste fally got across town and climbed to the van, drenched; two hours later, the van pulled up at the rad statn. Insi, the women of Wild Flag talked good-naturedly about the huiatns of beg on the road. Mary Timony had had a particularly tryg night. Her boyiend had joed her New York, and they had booked onle a place to stay that turned out to be a yoga stud; she was awakened by a gong and had to walk through a Bikram class to get to the bathroom. All four women lghed efully about the practice space they’d ed Portland to rerd the Wild Flag album—a cramped, wdowls room packed wh mil equipment. In the room next door, “a really loud dmmer would be jt bashg the hell out of the dms,” Brownste relled. “I thought, at one pot, that his therapist mt have sent him here. There was this horrible wheat-ee bakery next door—I mean, you’re not gog to be cravg <em>spelt</em>. I uldn’t wre another album there, but I’m glad we did that one, bee there’s an urgency to that probably uld only e om our tryg to crawl our way out of there.” Weiss was refully wrappg her blistered hands wh athletic tape, to gird them for another bout wh the song “Racehorse,” which often turned to a thartic, fifteen-mute workout onstage. Brownste mentned how hard was “to stay sharp on tour,” and said that she did a lot of readg. Lately, the “Portlandia” characters had “been seemg more ak to who I really am,” she add. “Or maybe ’s jt a safer place for me to go. Wh mic, I get to a much darker place. Where I’m able to go wh ‘Portlandia’ has a wir range, but also a brighter range.” Ially, she’d like to keep her mic si and her edy si separate; she don’t really want people to be thkg about her onscreen goofs when she’s tearg up wh Wild Flag.</p><p class="paywall">Tourg wh the band kept her away om Portland for most of October and November. But she went home for Thanksgivg, to see her dogs, to take long walks the mossy, gray-green woods, and to see Armisen, who flew om New York, where he’d been filmg “Saturday Night Live.” I e-mailed Brownste to ask how her holiday had gone.
