"I was assigned male at birth, and clearly a feme kid, growg up. I had no sense of muny, bee I was always ostracised."</p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"When I was krgarten first gra, I was always hangg out at the girls' table," Dana ntu. "And then they got to that age where was like, 'Ew, no. You're a boy. You n't hang out wh as well.' And all the boys were bullyg me. So I was jt isolated between the two pol."</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">After she me out at a young age, Dana remembers that the first safe space she found was a teen centre lled Levels. "It wasn't an LGBT-specific space, but bee sort of tered to the misf kids, a lot of the kids were queer. And if they are, 'What are they thkg about that?'"</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Safe spac like Levels and the Grand Peack Inn give queer people a place to go "where that tensn is removed," which n be "so eeg". But this episo, Tu'er Shen do more than jt bls the Inn as a temple dited to queer love. He also giv Toni the gift of immortaly, somethg which, as Dana prevly noted, is tly "radil". </p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"When I was filmg that scene wh Daniel Jun where Tu'er Shen grants me eternal life, we filmed his si of the room first. I was gog to the scene beg like, 'Oh, 's like a teaser – exposnal. We're jt gettg out of the way. Jt bangg out. Whatever.'"</p><div supprsHydratnWarng data-no-id="20" data-embed="pullquote" class="embed css-0 e9hzx6g0"><blockquote class="css-16ddmmp e1pe3zr91"><span aria-hidn="te" class="css-1ljy70d eagam8p0"></span><blockquote class="css-zggbc2 e1pe3zr90">"It was impossible to grow up whout any shame, but the way we -shame is by beg seen."</blockquote><span aria-hidn="te" class="css-1ljy70d eagam8p1"></span></blockquote></div><p data-no-id="21" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">But that all changed when Daniel started his monologue. "On the very first take, when he said 'I grant you a long life, and, this will be a temple for me and me, and you and yours,' I had tears. I jt welled up immediately," Dana tells me. </p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"To me," she ntu, "that whole ncept is jt radil and revolutnary. To show a queer person who's not a queer y, necsarily, but jt a n-of-the-l queer person beg granted a long and fulfillg life – jt felt like a visceral release the moment that le was set."</p><p data-no-id="23" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">And that visceral sense of release will be faiar to many fans who watched the scen play out back home too. In a world that don't want queer people to live "a long and fulfillg life," shame n build wh, often to a gree that we ourselv don't realise. </p><p data-no-id="24" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"It was impossible to grow up whout any sense of shame around my sexualy," says Dana. "But the way that we -shame is by beg heard and seen and valued for who we are." To place that nversatn ont and centre a show like this, reach so many more people than a one-on-one nversatn uld ever have."</p><p data-no-id="28" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Moments like this are genuely healg for queer viewers still stgglg to e to terms wh who they are and where they belong this world. "When I see shows like that, 's healg for me, and I thk 's important to have more and more of this on televisn, to break through that shame that a lot of queer folks have imprted onto our liv."</p><p data-no-id="29" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Historilly, relign has played a pivotal role this cycle of shame, perpetuatg the pa many still endure the LGBTQ+ muny. However, wasn't until Dana got sober that she beme more terted her own relig beliefs. </p><p data-no-id="32" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"Over time, my way wh my fah was actually history, origally. I slowly started to fd out more about Jewish theology by way of Jewish history, and started to fd myself really nnected to . And the thg that was really nnectg to me, is the grey-ns Jewishns." </p><p data-no-id="33" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"We love batg wh each other," Dana ntu. "We love fightg wh each other, we love disagreeg wh each other. That disagreement, and that tensn between one thg and another thg, for me, really related to my trans inty.</p><p data-no-id="34" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"I rry my life wh me before I transned. Even though at this pot I basilly move through the world as a woman, and people see me as a woman, I still rry the years I was socialised as a young boy wh me. And to me, 's like, that don't negate my womanhood. "And sort of intifyg wh that genr limaly wh Jewishns helped me spark that feelg of divy my queerns."</p><p data-no-id="37" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The ways which <em>Amerin Gods</em> is willg to queer divy is nothg short of "revolutnary," and no other scene ever featured on the show might be as "important" as the y which follows Toni's nversatn wh Salim.</p><p data-no-id="38" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Asi om rare exampl like <em><a href=" target="_blank" data-vars-ga-outbound-lk=" data-vars-ga-ux-element="Hyperlk" data-vars-ga-ll-to-actn="Sense8" class="body-lk css-nu68ka et3p2gv0">Sense8</a> </em>and <em><a href=" target="_blank" data-vars-ga-outbound-lk=" data-vars-ga-ux-element="Hyperlk" data-vars-ga-ll-to-actn="It's a S" class="body-lk css-nu68ka et3p2gv0">It's a S</a></em>, few TV shows have succsfully ptured the hedonistic eedom of queer sex whout prrisg the straight, whe cis gaze. But here, <em>Amerin Gods</em> ptur exactly what 's like to move beyond the nstrats of heteronormativy, openg yourself up to new physil experienc that help you redisver yourself and st asi all notns of shame. </p><p data-no-id="39" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Knowg that Toni would play a key role this y scene did make Dana a b apprehensive at first – "It was fely a leap of fah" – but was also one that she was happy to take. "I was like, 'If this nudy is gog to be like anythg they've done on the show before, 's gog to be very empowerg nudy.'<br /></p><div supprsHydratnWarng data-no-id="40" data-embed="pullquote" class="embed css-0 e9hzx6g0"><blockquote class="css-16ddmmp e1pe3zr91"><span aria-hidn="te" class="css-1ljy70d eagam8p0"></span><blockquote class="css-zggbc2 e1pe3zr90">"For me to tegrate the tensn between those two thgs to my life, feels dive."</blockquote><span aria-hidn="te" class="css-1ljy70d eagam8p1"></span></blockquote></div><p data-no-id="41" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">After Dana arrived on set, she and director Tim Southam met to discs Toni's arc. "When we got to that scene, he asked me this way – 's like, sometim, people who aren't trans or aren't queer, put the burn on queer people to expla thgs. And he managed to ask me this way that didn’t make me feel like that at all, like: 'What would you want to see this scene as a queer person? And should e as no surprise that Dana felt this on set too. </p><p data-no-id="46" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"It's funny, the shot of me on the swg where go to slow motn, I remember shootg that. That feelg of openns and joy was jt pletely genue. Bee of that, I found super-healg." </p><p data-no-id="47" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"I thought was so important to have a visibly trans body that was beg celebrated a way that wasn't objectifyg," Dana rells. "For someone who personally is so ed to beg objectified, pecially datg suatns and stuff like that; to have that space to experience that, to feel celebrated and uplifted a scene that was sexual, was jt credibly healg."</p><p data-no-id="48" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">To make this possible, everyone had to e together wh the same goal, to make the set feel open and safe. What n be done so that the "revolutnary" storytellg seen here <em>Amerin Gods</em> will no longer feel "revolutnary"?</p><p data-no-id="51" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"So, first," Dana tells , "We need non-didactic rol whose transns rms who they are but is not <em>the</em> enge of the story. So many people image that our liv revolve around beg trans that they n’t nceptualise existg a story that don't revolve around beg trans." </p><p data-no-id="52" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">"Sendly," Dana ntu, "there are simply not enough trans rol to sta the reers of the actors who are worthy of them. Perd. In the past two years, I've experienced a shift where stg directors will brg trans actors for small rol.
