In the thirti and forti, ways that beme art-world nventnal wisdom, some crics equated regnalism wh the blood-and-soil mystique of Nazism and/or socialist realism. But Wood, Benton, and Curry were sturdy Roosevelt liberals. (Wood head Iowa offic of the New Deal programs that supported artists durg the Deprsn.) Some sophistit, New York and Hollywood smart sets, took the artists’ works stri as populist chic. Collectors of Wood clud Cole Porter, Alexanr Woolltt, Edward G. Robson, and Kg Vidor. (If anythg about the putatively backward-lookg Wood was closeted, was Surrealism; there are whiffs his work of the fantastic landsp of the next artist to be as famo Ameri as he had been: Salvador Dali.) A recent bgraphy of the artist by R. Tripp Evans tak gaydar to such feverish extrem that an say by Richard Meyer the show’s talogue tak pas to tone down a ltle. (“Sometim an ear of rn is jt an ear of rn,” Meyer remarks.) Wood was certaly nflicted, and he had good reason to fear damage to his very public reer as a lecturer and oft-quoted savant. He was briefly, disastroly married to a flamboyant former opera sger, Sara Sherman Maxon, several years his senr, who alienated his circle of iends Cedar Rapids. Lter Longman, a mornist-md lleague the Universy of Iowa art partment, where Wood had tght sce 1935, tried mightily to have him fired, part on explic moral grounds. But the universy ignored the charge and retaed Wood. A memorial show after his ath, at the Art Instute of Chigo, was a flop. The regnalists lost standg to ls boosterish morn paters of Amerin subjects, such as Edward Hopper, Charl Burchfield, Regald Marsh, and Charl Sheeler. (Meanwhile, New York, the gay paters Pl Cadm and Jared French employed styl ak to that of Wood to kick their closet doors at least halfway open.) In the self-portra, a wdl—a lemotif most of Wood’s landsp—looms behd him agast a yellow sky. There’s a fatly sctive sensualy his pk flhs, emphasized by the plungg neckle of the shirt that he wears. His face, spe s termedly set ey and mouth, has a babyish look that people often remarked on. As wh all his works that reward more than a glance, cludg “Amerin Gothic,” a eply buried, wild humor seems astir yet, at the same time, baffled at the pot of s ntact wh the world.
