GAY HOLLYWOOD THE STUD DAYS. DECEMBER 16, 2015 ADM UNTEGORIZED 2 I READ RECENTLY THAT ‘GAY-GOSSIP IS THE NEWT AND MOST CLEVER FORM OF HOMOPHOBIA’. NICE TRY, BUT I’M NOT BUYG . I AM NEHER HOMOSEXUAL NOR HOMOPHOBIC, BUT I AM TERTED SUBTERFUGE AND EXPOSG OLD-TIME MOVIE STUDS THAT MA AN ART FORM OUT OF GULLG THE PUBLIC. FOR FIFTY OR SO YEARS THEIR PUBLICY MACH CHURNED OUT PHONY, SANIZED IMAG OF THEIR STARS AND THEIR LIFTYL, AND THE PUBLIC SWALLOWED EVERY WORD OF THEM. TODAY, WE KNOW BETTER. HUNDREDS, IF NOT THOANDS, OF BGRAPHI HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED OVER THE LAST FORTY OR SO YEARS, THAT DISPUTE THE FANTASY CREATED BY STUD MOGULS WHOSE ONLY AIM WAS TO MAKE MORE MONEY AND STILL MORE MONEY. THE DAYS WE N READ ACUNTS OF LIFE AMONG THE STARS BY FORMER EMPLOYE OF THE STUDS, EVEN THEIR CHILDREN, ACUNTS THAT ARE EE OF THE THREAT OF DISMISSAL OR LIGATN NOW THAT THE ALL-POWERFUL STUD BOSS ARE GONE. NOT ALL OF THE ACUNTS N BE TSTED, OF URSE, BUT THERE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH TO ENABLE TO SEEK (AND FD) VERIFITN WHERE NEED. SO, FOR THE RERD, I HAVE NO TERT WHAT NSENTG ADULTS DO BEHD CLOSED DOORS. IT IS THEIR BS AND NO-ONE ELSE’S. BUT I DO HAVE AN TERT HISTORY, GENUE HISTORY THAT IS, NOT SOME ‘SMOKE AND MIRRORS’ EXERCISE DREAMT UP BY SOME CIGAR-CHOMPG STUD EXECUTIVE WH TOO MUCH POWER AND TOO FEW MORALS.HOMOSEXUALY AND BISEXUALY WERE AGAST THE LAW BACK THE DAYS WHEN THE STUDS RAN HOLLYWOOD (APPROXIMATELY 1905 – 1958). THE MOVIE LONY WAS LERALLY RIDDLED WH PEOPLE WHOSE SEXUAL PERSUASN WAS ANYTHG OTHER THAN HETEROSEXUAL. THE STUD BOSS KNEW WHO WAS WHAT, OF URSE, AND THEY KEPT A CLOSE WATCH ON THE TABLOIDS, MAGAZ AND TRA PAPERS TO MAKE SURE THE SEXUALY OF THEIR MEAL-TICKETS REMAED, AT LEAST PUBLICLY, HETEROSEXUAL AND NOTHG BUT HETEROSEXUAL. WHAT STARTED OUT AS A SAFEGUARD QUICKLY EVOLVED TO A FULL-TIME POLICY SIGNED TO HOODWK THE PAYG PUBLIC TO BELIEVG WHATEVER THE STUDS WANTED THEM TO BELIEVE.STRANGE AS MIGHT SEEM, MOST FANS TEND NOT TO BELIEVE STORI THAT THEIR IDOLS ARE GAY. PROBABLY BEE THEY SIMPLY DON’T WANT TO. ANY REPORT OF SLEAZY HETEROSEXUAL SHENANIGANS IS UALLY ACCEPTED WHOUT QUTN, BUT MENTN OF A STAR BEG GAY OR BISEXUAL IS GENERALLY MET WH ACCATNS OF ‘MUCK-RAKG’ AND/OR PEDDLG SENSATNALISM. WHY IS THAT? NAYSAYERS THROW UP THE UAL ARGUMENTS – ‘BUT HE’S MARRIED’ OR ‘THEY HAVE KIDS’. BUT THE FACT IS THAT HOLLYWOOD IS (AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN) CHOCK FULL OF MALE AND FEMALE STARS PLAYG THE HETEROSEXUAL GAME FOR ALL THEY ARE WORTH. AND, OF URSE, HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE STUDS’ TERTS TO HAVE ALL THEIR MATEE IDOLS AS ‘STRAIGHT’ AS ARROWS, HENCE LAVENR MARRIAG EVERYWHERE, ‘BEARDS’ WORKG FULL TIME, AND ‘VER-UPS’ ORCHTRATED BY THE STUD ‘FIXERS’. THE FACT THAT THE ‘BIGGI’ HAVE ALWAYS ED ‘FIXERS’ IS ILLUMATG SELF.LAVENR MARRIAG WERE ARRANGED BY STUDS TO FLECT TABLOIDS OM LVG TO THE SEXUAL PERSUASN OF STARS THEY SPECTED OF BEG HOMOSEXUAL. TY AND SWEET JA GAYNOR LIVED HER LIFE LAVENR MARRIAG, THE SEND OF WHICH WAS FOR TWENTY YEARS TO GAY SIGNER ADRIAN, AND PRODUCED A CHILD. LILYAN TASHMAN WAS A LAVENR ARRANGEMENT WH GAY ACTOR EDMUND LOWE WHILE DULGG A FOUR-YEAR AFFAIR WH GARBO. CLTTE COLBERT WAS ANOTHER OF HER LBIAN LOVERS. OTHER STARS, SUCH AS JEAN ARTHUR, HAD THEIR LBIAN LIAISONS OUT ON THE AST, FAR OM HOLLYWOOD AND THE GOSSIP LUMNISTS.JA GAYNOR AND ADRIAN – A LAVENR MARRIAGEJEAN ARTHURCARY GRANT WOULD MARRY FIVE TIM ATTEMPTS TO MASK HIS HOMOSEXUALY AND HIS LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WH RANDOLPH STT (SEE PICTURE AT TOP). GAY DIRECTOR GEE COR WOULD HOLD THE BIGGT GAY AND LBIAN PARTI HIS HOME, HIS HOMOSEXUALY AN OPEN SECRET THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE MUNY. MEN OFTEN WORE PURPLE NECKTI AS A KD OF FOR ATTRACTG OTHER GAY MEN AT CLUBS AND PARTI. LBIAN FANS OFTEN WROTE THEIR LETTERS ON LAVENR OR MVE PAPER. I LOVE THE STORY TOLD ABOUT COR WHEN HE WAS NONTED ABOUT HIS HOMOSEXUALY BY THE HEAD OF MGM, LOUIS B MAYER, A DYED THE WOOL HOMOPHOBIC IF THERE EVER WAS ONE. ‘ER…GEE, ARE YOU REALLY A…HOM…HOMOSEXUAL? MAYER ASKED. COR LOOKED HIM STRAIGHT THE EYE AND GAVE HIM A ONE-WORD ANSWER. ‘DEDITED!’ MAYER NEVER BROUGHT THE SUBJECT UP WH HIM AGA.DIRECTOR GEE CORAND THERE WERE MANY GAY TABLISHMENTS THROUGHOUT HOLLYWOOD, PECIALLY THE THIRTI AND FORTI. THE VERY FIRST WAS JIMMY’S BACK YARD, WHICH OPENED 1929. PROHIBN WAS FULL SWG THEN, BUT BOOTLEGGERS AND E ALERS KEPT PATRONS WELL SUPPLIED NEVERTHELS. A SPEAKEASY NAMED BBB’S CELLAR WAS EXTREMELY POPULAR WHEN OPENED DOWN THE ROAD OM JIMMY’S, ALTHOUGH THERE WERE NO SIGNS DITG WAS A RENZVO FOR GAY PATRONS. TRADNALLY, PATRONS WERE GIVEN A HAMMER AS THEY ARRIVED, WHICH THEY WOULD BANG ON THE TABLE WHENEVER SOMEONE ENTERED THE PREMIS. REGULARS CLUD TALLULAH BANKHEAD, JOAN CRAWFORD, CONSTANCE BENT, NORMA TALMADGE, LILYAN TASHMAN, RAMON NOVARRO, CARY GRANT AND HOWARD HUGH, JT TO NAME A FEW. IT WAS MARLENE DIETRICH’S FAVOURE CLUB.TALLULAH BANKHEADCONSTANCE BENTLILYAN TASHMANTHE POLICE TEND TO CRACK DOWN ON WHAT THEY REFERRED TO AS THE ‘PANSY CLUBS’, THE ON THAT OFFERED FLOORSHOWS WHICH ‘WOMEN MASQUERAD AS MEN, AND MEN AS WOMEN’. THE HOLLYWOOD VICE SQUAD REGULARLY POUNCED ON THE TABLISHMENTS. FEMALE IMPERSONATORS AT JIMMY’S BACK YARD WERE DRAGGED OFF TO JAIL AFTER ONE RAID AND GIVEN 6 MONTH’S IMPRISONMENT! ONE NIGHT, SO THE STORY GO, THE BISEXUAL ACTRS LILI DAMA HAD SEX WH A WAER FULL VIEW OF TWENTY OR SO SPECTATORS. LTLE WONR HER FORMER LOVER HUMPHREY BOGART NICKNAMED HER ‘TIGER LIL’. HER LOVERS, MALE AND FEMALE, NUMBERED THE HUNDREDS. FANS HAD NO IA SHE SWUNG BOTH WAYS. HER HBAND ERROL FLYNN KNEW, OF URSE, NOT THAT OVERLY BOTHERED HIM. LILI DAMA AND HER HBAND ERROL FLYNNCAFé GALA WAS OPENED 1939 ON SUNSET BOULEVARD. IT NEVER ADVERTISED SELF AS A GAY BAR, NOR WAS EXCLIVELY GAY, BUT WAS SENTIALLY SO, NOHELS. THE BAR AREA TERED TO GAY MEN, BUT THERE WERE STRICT L, PECIALLY REGARDG NTACT BETWEEN PATRONS. NOTHG BEYOND A HANDSHAKE WAS TOLERATED ON THE PREMIS. OPENED BY THE BARONS CATHERE D’ERLANGER, FEATURED GAY SGER JOHNNY WALSH, AND WAS THE FAVOURE GAY BAR OF JUDY GARLAND. COLE PORTER ULD BE OBSERVED THERE, AS WELL AS GRETA GARBO ON THE RARE OCSNS SHE VENTURED OUT WH HER NUTRNIST RT GAYLORD HSER. IT WAS ONE PLACE WHERE GAY AND LBIAN STARS AND OTHER NOTABL ULD DROP WHOUT NNG THE RISK OF BEG RAID. IT CLOSED 1948.THE GREAT COLE PORTERTHE ALMOST AS GREAT JUDY GARLANDTHE FLAMGO WAS AN UPSLE LBIAN NIGHTCLUB, VERY POPULAR THE 1940S, THAT WAS N BY A WOMAN NAMED BEVERLY SHAW, WHO WOULD GREET PATRONS WEARG A MAN’S JACKET AND BOW TIE ON HER TOP HALF, A SHORT SKIRT AND HIGH HEELS BELOW THE WAIST. THE CANYON CLUB WAS A GAY AND LBIAN SPOT THROUGHOUT THE 40S AND 50S, SUATED THE TOPANGA CANYON AREA. IT HAD AN EARLY WARNG SYSTEM WHICH LIGHTS WOULD FLASH WHEN THE VICE SQUAD WAS SPIED APPROACHG. THIS WAS THE SIGNAL FOR PATRONS TO SWCH DANCE PARTNERS TO SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSE SEX.BEVERLY SHAW OF THE FLAMGOSMTY’S, THE GAY INN AND THE GAYWAY CAFé WERE THREE GAY VENU WELL KNOWN TO THE ARY. WHEREVER THEY SPECTED GAY CROWDS TO NGREGATE, THE ARMY WOULD POST SIGNS AT THOSE PLAC, ‘OUT OF BOUNDS TO ARY PERSONNEL’. NOT ALL GAY MEETG PLAC WERE CLUBS, OF URSE. PERSHG SQUARE WAS A PARK DOWNTOWN LOS ANGEL. A TRAVEL SE LLED ‘DISVER LOS ANGEL’ NAMED PERSHG SQUARE AS ONE OF ‘TEN GAY LANDMARKS’ WORTH VISG. DURG WW2 THE ARMY WOULD PUT UP RMATN AREAS THE SQUARE FOR SOLDIERS, EVEN THOUGH WAS A POPULAR NGREGATG AREA FOR GAYS. AND THE NOTOR BILTMORE HOTEL WAS JT ACROSS THE STREET.PERSHG SQUARE, L.A. CIR 1945THE BILTMORE HOTEL BALLROOM CIR 1930THE BILTMORE OPENED S DOORS 1923. ITS BAR WAS ONE OF THE FEW PLAC LOS ANGEL WHERE GAYS ULD MEET OPENLY. THE HOTEL HAS WELED PRINTS, DIGNARI AND CLOSETED MALE CELEBRI FOR S. EIGHT OSRS BANQUETS HAVE BEEN HELD THERE, AND MOVI AND TELEVISN PROGRAMS FILMED THERE. DURG THE WAR UNIFORMED SOLDIERS WOULD BE PACKED THREE EP AT THE BAR SEARCH OF GAY LOVE. THE BILTMORE IS ALSO HISTORILLY KNOWN TO BE THE LAST PLACE THE FAMO BLACK DAHLIA WAS SEEN PRR TO HER GRISLY RPSE TURNG UP TWO HALV 1946. TODAY, (TO S EVERLASTG SHAME), THE BAR SERV A ‘BLACK DAHLIA COCKTAIL’. WELL, WHATEVER BRGS A BUCK, I GUS.ELIZABETH SHORT – ‘THE BLACK DAHLIA’OTHER VENU OF THE 30S AND 40S CLUD SPEAK 39, JOHNNY FRENCHMAN’S, THE GYPSY ROOM, THE TROPIL VILLAGE AND SANTS CLUB. A JOT LLED M & M WAS A LBIAN BAR THAT TERED PRIMARILY FOR LATAS. BROTHERS WAS A GAY BAR FOR AIN-AMERINS. IN THE 50S AND 60S THERE EXISTED THE CHEROKEE CLUB, HOE OF IVY, LAFAYETTE, CHEE-CHEE’S, OPEN DOOR, THE PARTY PAD AND THE CAROEL VENICE. THERE WERE SR MORE. UNR-AGE GAYS WERE TERED FOR AS WELL. THOSE WHO LACKED THE NECSARY ID TO GET TO BARS ULD ADJOURN TO PLAC SUCH AS COFFEE DAN’S, THE GOLD CUP AND MARL INN ON HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, ALL OF WHICH TERED EXCLIVELY FOR HOMOSEXUALS. IN THE FIFTI MONTGOMERY CLIFT WAS OFTEN SEEN AT COFFEE DAN’S. BY THE 60S TRANSVT HAD TAKEN OVER THE TABLISHMENT. THERE WERE SEVERAL COFFEE DAN’S LOS ANGEL. THE GAY ONE WAS ON HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD.MONTGOMERY CLIFTIT WAS ALLA NAZIMOVA WHO ED THE PHEMISM ‘THE SEWG CIRCLE’ FOR HOLLYWOOD’S LBIAN ATERNY. TALLULAH BANKHEAD MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN VOLVED WH THE GROUP, BUT SHE HAD MANY FEMALE LOVERS. HATTIE MCDANIEL AND PATSY KELLY WERE TWO OF THEM. HATTIE WON AN OSR PLAYG MAMMY GONE WH THE WD 1939. SGER BILLIE HOLIDAY WAS ANOTHER OF TALLULAH’S NQUTS. THE CIRCLE WOULD MEET REGULARLY, SOMETIM AT THE HOME OF DELOR DEL R, AND NSISTED OF LBIANS, BISEXUALS AND THE OCSNAL ‘EXPERIMENTER’. THEY WOULD MEET AT ONE ANOTHER’S HOM FOR LUNCH, A CHAT AND WHATEVER ELSE EVENTUATED. THE AGENDA WAS FLEXIBLE. HATTIE MCDANIELMEMBERS ME AND WENT, BUT STARS SUCH AS JOAN CRAWFORD, GARBO, BARBARA STANWYCK, MYRNA LOY, AGN MOOREHEAD, DANCER ISADORA DUNN, WRER MERCES ASTA AND DIETRICH WERE ALL SAID TO BE PART OF THE SAPPHIC SEWG CIRCLE. OTHERS CLUD KATE HEPBURN, KAY FRANCIS, JUDH ANRSON, EVELYN BRENT AND MARJORIE MA (MA KETTLE). GARBO AND DIETRICH ALWAYS MATAED THEY NEVER KNEW EACH OTHER, BUT SIRS DISAGREE, PECIALLY LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT BOTH WOMEN APPEARED A MOVIE BERL 1925 LLED THE JOYLS STREET. PERSONALLY, I DOUBT IF THEY WERE LOVERS. IF THEY WERE, THEN WHY WOULD DIETRICH NY ? GARBO WAS RIDICULOLY SECRETIVE, BUT MARLENE CERTALY WAS NOT.AGN MOOREHEADMYRNA LOYKAY FRANCISMA KETTLECRAWFORD HAD MANY LOVERS OF BOTH SEX. SHE EVEN TOOK A CRACK AT THE HETEROSEXUAL MARILYN MONROE DURG ONE OF MM’S WEAKER MOMENTS. CRAWFORD WAS NOTOR FOR HOLDG GDG AGAST ANYONE (MALE OR FEMALE) THAT REFED TO SLEEP WH HER.OTHER THAN LILYAN TASHMAN, GARBO HAD RELATNSHIPS WH LOUISE BROOKS AND MERCES ASTA, YET HER GREAT LOVE WAS A MARRIED SWEDISH ACTRS NAMED MIMI POLLAK. UNLIKE DIETRICH, GARBO NEVER MARRIED AND NEVER HAD CHILDREN. OF URSE, JT LIKE MARLENE, SHE TOOK LOVERS OF BOTH GENRS. Yet everythg else at Bellerive, the 18th-century plantatn hoe to which Colbert whdrew after her Hollywood reer end 1961, had stayed virtually the same sce her ath on July 30, 1996, at 92. There is an old French proverb: ‘Happy untri and hont women have no stori to tell about themselv.’” Perhaps she might have had some tal to tell if she had spoken stead of Lily Eie Chcho, the name given to her at birth. The send child of a pastry-shop owner, Ge Cl Chcho, and Jeanne Loew, Lily was born the Paris suburb of St.-Mandé on September 13, 1903. After M. M. Chcho found a job as a mor official at First Natnal Cy Bank (Cibank’s precursor), and the children attend grammar school at P.S. 59 on 57th Street. From the earlit age, Mme. Chcho told her dghter that she was the bety the fay, and that ltle Lily was an ugly ducklg. “She gave Cltte a terrific plex,” says Leonora Hornblow, widow of the producer Arthur Hornblow Jr. and a iend of Colbert’s sce 1942. Co Lewis, the dghter of Colbert’s brother, says that Mme. Chcho “clearly favored my father. She thought he uld do no wrong. Aunt Cltte spent her life searchg for her approval.”

Colbert, who had wanted to be a pater ever sce she uld hold a pencil, enrolled Washgton Irvg High School bee of s strong art program. But December 1918, when she was 15, Colbert was unexpectedly thst onto the stage by the school’s elocutn partment. “A girl the class play beme ill,” she told film cric Rex Reed the urse of an unpublished terview late her life. “I was dragged to the productn at the 11th hour bee I was the only one the school who really spoke fluent French.” The play was lled Grammar, and the part was that of “Blanche, Caboset’s dghter.”

Colbert said that as a nsequence “the actg bug took a slice out of me,” and around 1919, when she learned that the Provcetown Playhoe Greenwich Village was payg $75 a week to actrs, she went down wh a iend and land a role a productn lled The Widow’s Veil. In the meantime, she was also earng around $35 a week givg French lsons. Throughout her life, Colbert ntued to thk, dream, and pray French, and spoke only her native tongue wh her mother.

One of Colbert’s stunts seems to have arranged for her to meet the wrer Anne Morrison 1923, durg stg lls for her play The Wild Wttts. Colbert won a ty part, and her Broadway but at the Frazee Theatre on 42ndStreet nsisted of exactly three l: “The party was so lovely. The garn is betiful. I am so hungry.” From then on, Colbert stated, “I never wanted to do anythg else.”

Right om the start, the spired young actrs adopted a nom théâtre, selected by her mother. “Cltte”—an appellatn that the actrs erroneoly claimed had never existed until Mme. Chcho ma up—was a dimutive of her father’s middle name, and “Colbert” was plucked om a remote branch of the fay tree.

By the end of 1925, the year of her father’s ath, Colbert had appeared about half a dozen plays, but wh her performance as a kept woman A Kiss a Taxi she leapt to the limelight. The play’s producer, “a shark named Al Woods,” had signed her up for a five-year ntract at $150 a week—enough money to move her fay out of the East Si walk-up to granr acmodatns at 55 Central Park Wt. “We had got to the luxury class,” Colbert said.

Durg the same year, Billboard announced that Woods “has amb plans for her future,” and crics salivated over her. “In Miss Colbert’s bety there is a certa strangens,” wrote one. “Her ey are the only absolutely black ey we ever saw. She lghs all the time and is filled wh life and vivacy, and yet there is a certa mglg of virgy, an air of digny.” Likewise imprsed wh her physil assets, Walter Wchell dubbed her “Legs Colbert.”

One reason Colbert began generatg so much heat was her performance 1927’s The Barker at the Biltmore Theater. She and the novice actor Norman Foster (né Hoeffer), who played her love tert, were rryg on a real-life, torrid, and clanste affair. “Norman was a charmg man—a wholome Amerin boy,” says photographer and Hollywood hosts Jean Howard. When the play traveled to London 1928, the lovers were surreptly wed. “I was so terrified of my mother’s disapproval, I kept the marriage a secret,” Colbert told Reed. She feared Mme. Chcho to such an extent that for the uple’s entire seven-year marriage Colbert ntued to live wh her mother, while Foster mataed a separate rince.

Like many succsful stage actors of the perd, Colbert 1927 began a route of workg the theater at night and filmg durg the day at the studs then flourishg around New York. Her but movie—her only silent picture—was a slapdash unrtakg lled For the Love of Mike, directed by Frank Capra. Disuraged by the unspired rults, Colbert vowed never to do another film. “When I saw myself, I was appalled,” she said. “I was sure nobody would pay to look at me. Apparently I was wrong.”

Colbert, of urse, changed her md about the medium. Around the same time she was appearg on Broadway Eugene O’Neill’s Dynamo (which the March 1929 Vany Fairpromoted wh a Steichen portra of the starlet), she ma her first talkie, Paramount’s The Hole the Wall, wh Edward G. Robson. Time prophied that Colbert’s “screen stardom is assured,” and Paramount’s East Coast office the meantime had reward her wh a ntract. Norman Foster also signed wh Paramount, and 1930 the uple -starred Young Man of Manhattan, Gger Rogers’ first movie. (Ironilly, one cric wrote that Foster “did not seem to get any scery to his love scen.”)

Gee Abbott’s Manslghter (1930) end her stt wh Paramount’s Astoria, Queens, stud, om which the pany whdrew 1932. “When I was still the toast of Broadway,” Colbert said, “the stock market crashed, talkg pictur were , and the night only 37 people showed up the dience of the Elmer Rice play See Napl and Die I knew was time to see Hollywood or die.” She and her mother board the Super Chief for California, and the Wt Coast Paramount office dispatched still photographer John Engstead, along wh one producer and a limoe, to greet her at L.A.’s Santa Fe statn. “It wasn’t one of the big-time arrivals,” Engstead noted.

Colbert languished at Paramount for a few years “fluffy, light-head rol which, I felt, did not give spe enough to her talent,” Cecil B. Fredric March. “Freddie March was the worst womanizer I ever knew,” Colbert told Rex Reed. “His hands had 20 fgers, I swear, and they were always on my ass. I fally said, ‘If you don’t stop I’ll walk right out of the scene and tell Mr. DeMille what you’re dog.’ … So the mera rolled aga. I’m on top of the throne surround by four blacks—they lled them Nubians then, honey—and all the nuchs. The blacks and the nuchs were always shootg craps. Anyway, Mr. DeMille yelled ‘Actn,’ and all of a sudn I felt this hand right around my left cheek and I stopped and walked down to mera and mand to see Mr. DeMille!” Even when John Engstead was takg publicy shots for the movie, March uld not rist fondlg her rrière. One photo, “wh Freddie’s hand wrapped around my rear end,” Colbert said, found s way to the Police Gazette. “And the ptn read, ‘Even if the Mar haven’t land, Freddie March seems to have the suatn well hand.’” Afonted, she stormed to the stud boss’s office, and as a rult, Engstead said, “she was the first star at Paramount to get … approval of her photographs … and was all my flt.”

March was not alone his lt for Colbert. “Everybody on the Paramount lot had a csh on her,” says producer A. C. Lyl, then an office boy. And once the public was treated to the tillatg sight of an unclothed Colbert olickg a bath of ass’s k, she attracted legns of new admirers. “Two men wh rdboard stirred up the k at the other end of the bathtub so would make wav,” she disclosed to Rex Reed, “and the k went below my nippl. DeMille would yell ‘Cut!’ till they got more k above the censorship level. I was sweatg like hell all that hot k!” DeMille, however, was forced to e the footage already shot when, after a dner break, everyone returned to the set to fd that the k had oled down and curdled to chee.

Colbert’s reer was given another need boost wh the help of Hollywood’s first power agent, Charl Feldman, who set up the al that would tapult Colbert to the loftit heights of the Hollywood empyrean. For months a script by Robert Risk lled Night B—the madp tale of a naway heirs who falls love wh the virile, sop-seekg journalist guardg her—had been passed around among the studs. MGM fally bought , and then trad and the servic of Clark Gable to Columbia, exchange for the e of Frank Capra for a picture that never materialized. Miriam Hopks and Constance Bent, appalled by the drab wardrobe selectns, had both turned down the movie. Dperate to start shootg, Columbia agreed to the terms—double her ual $25,000 fee and a shootg schle of no more than four weeks—mand by Colbert, who was not thrilled about ncelg a vatn wh Louis B. Mayer’s dghter Edie Goetz. Annoyed by her avarice, Capra rped that she had “a md as bright as a dollar, and a French appreciatn of s lter.” Capra and Colbert did not get along. “He was the one director she really hated,” says Colbert’s iend the wrer Leonard Gershe.

Somehow or other, the ensemble managed to pull self together for the sake of the movie—which, of urse, was rechristened It Happened One Night. To everyone’s great astonishment, the stud found had churned out a smash h. The movie was nomated for five Amy Awards, and won all tegori: bt picture, bt actor, bt actrs, bt director, and bt wrg adaptatn, a feat not repeated until 1975’s One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nt. The 1934 Osr sweep of It Happened One Night was ma even more dramatic by the fact that a ntroversy broke out when neher Bette Davis’s performance Of Human Bondage nor Myrna Loy’s The Th Manhad been nomated. Deferrg to protters, the amy spend normal votg pro-cr and allowed special wre- ballots. As a rult, Colbert harbored no hop of wng, and on the night of the ceremony she was tchg a tra for New York. “I was already aboard the Super Chief Los Angel,” Colbert remembered, “when three boys om Columbia htled me to a limoe and off to the old Biltmore Hotel downtown L.A. It was a very formal affair, and there I stood a brown travelg su and hat wh my fur over my arm.” Shirley Temple prented her wh the statuette, and the Super Chief was held until she returned to the statn.

An ocean of k has been spilt tryg to expla the endurg magic of It Happened One Night—still Colbert’s most famo role—much of centered, jtifiably, on the film’s pist appeal to a Deprsn dience. But Colbert nfid Leonard Gershe another reason for the spellbdg potency of the silver-screen chemistry. “I asked Cltte once, ‘Did you like Gable?’ And she gave me this funny look. ‘Darlg,’ she said. ‘I did go all the way wh him. Do that answer your qutn?’” Gershe’s story is rroborated by one other source. Barbara Satra says, “Mna Wallis, [producer]Hal Wallis’s sister, was a stg director at Warner’s, and she had all the stars go through her stg uch. When Mna told she had been wh one of Hollywood’s biggt sex symbols, we prsed for more tails. ‘Well,’ she said, holdg up her pkie, ‘he was like this.’ We were so disappoted! I repeated the story at lunch once when we were visg Barbados. After lunch Cltte grabbed me and took me behd a bh. ‘Mna is not the horse’s mouth—I am. He was not like this,’ she said, showg her ltle fger. ‘He was like that!’ And she spread her two hands wi apart. I gus Mna had been kiddg all along.”

Wh It Happened One Night, the actrs had fally crystallized her star style, both physilly and technilly. Billy Wilr, who -wrote three of Colbert’s movi—Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife (1938), Midnight (1939), and Arise, My Love (1940)—says, “Cltte always knew where the joke was. She got the lghs.” Leonora Hornblow adds, “It was no accint that Cltte beme a star. She worked extremely hard at . She was not Hollywood’s greatt bety, but she had somethg more—a face that looked like no one else’s. A face that you remembered.”

Matag the Cltte Colbert look—unvaryg except historil rol—entailed an enormo amount of disciple, and more than a few power stggl. Her sistence that she be photographed only om her left si—sets had to be vised and shots tablished to mouflage a nearly visible bump on the right si of her nose—duced Mary Astor to ll Colbert’s right profile “the other si of the moon.” If anybody tried to tamper wh her immutable hairdo, makp, or hem length, she dismissed their attempts wh the words “I’ve been the Cltte Colbert bs a long time.” Paramount’s smetics wizard Wally Wtmore created the origal blueprt for her face makp. But before long, tappg her art stunt’s knowledge of lor and bsh, she surpassed the master. “I’m a good artist,” Colbert told wrer and photographer Michael Teague. “But every day I pat the same picture—my face.”

Her hairdo was nceived by legendary Hollywood iffr Sydney Guilaroff, but soon enough Paramount’s tonsorial experts surrenred their shears, dy, and curlers to her. She never viated om her signature bangs, Leonard Gershe says, bee “she wanted to nceal her low forehead. She was self-nsc about . The basic Cltte was Lily Chcho, but glamorized and turned to an 8-by-10 glossy.”

Her tramark whe Peter Pan llar—nspicuoly evint It Happened One Night—was a sartorial trick vented to elongate her short neck. (Durg rehearsals for the 1956 telest of his play Blhe Spir, Noël Coward told Colbert, who had been abradg his sensive nerv, “If you had a neck, I’d wrg .”) She tght Adolfo, who drsed her equently the last two s of her life, “how to make a llar so that she would not look buried a bloe,” he says. Colbert’s stum by Travis Banton for DeMille’s 1934 Cleopatra, wh their eccentric shoulr straps, were likewise engeered to disguise the same flaw.

In 1935—the first year Colbert was named one of the top 10 stars at the box office—she was paired The Gild Lily wh Fred MacMurray, who would bee her -star six more pictur. “Arthur ed to say she was the only actrs who uld make Fred look sexy,” says Leonora Hornblow. She was also teamed that year wh Charl Boyer Private Worlds, the send of a tr of movi they did together—and Colbert, tranged om Norman Foster and goad by the meddlome Mme. Chcho, nearly ma the mistake of marryg him. “I had a mad csh on Charl, even though I uldn’t unrstand a goddamn word he said,” Colbert told Rex Reed. “He asked me to marry him several tim and I told him to go back to France and get a grip on himself. But then [ 1934] I went to New York for a s operatn and was so lonely I started to have send thoughts.” At last, givg , she phoned to accept his proposal—but she uldn’t reach him as he was “on lotn, Poland or someplace. Four days later I wasn’t feelg so bad, so I let pass. It’s jt as well.”

The chronic s ndn that nearly sent her to the altar wh Boyer also brought to her life the man who would bee her send hband, Joel Jay “Jack” Prsman, an ear-nose-and-throat physician and U.C.L.A. profsor. Colbert mataed she first met him his office as a patient—a tale fay lore ntradicts. “I always heard Aunt Cltte met Uncle Jack as a rult of a dner party she gave while she was still married to Norman Foster,” Co Lewis says. “My father, like my grandmother, never liked Norman. At this dner my father end up hlg Foster off, flatteng him out, and breakg his nose. Aunt Cltte took him to the bt surgeon town to have his nose fixed—and that turned out to be Jack Prsman.” Old prs clippgs, which dutifully reported every ailment Colbert suffered, noted that on Augt 25, 1933, a Dr. Prsman had assisted an appenctomy on the star. By this date, seems, the ear-nose-and-throat practner had begun to make a specialty of Colbert, if not of the appendix.

In Augt 1935, Colbert fally obtaed a Mexin divorce om Foster, who, one newspaper em noted, had been required durg their marriage to apply for a date “ the manner of an ordary suor.” Foster had not been stg home idly between “dat” wh his wife, however; as soon as their divorce was fal, he married Loretta Young’s sister Sally Blane, and went on to a rpectable reer as a director. “Cltte was termed to make her send marriage work,” Leonora Hornblow says. “She felt guilty about Norman bee she had never given the marriage a fair chance. But she also held her mother rponsible for g .” Leonard Gershe adds, “Cltte never really got over Norman. She loved the memory of their passn. It was the only time she ever really experienced . But if she had stayed the marriage wh Norman, she never would have bee Cltte Colbert. Beg Cltte is what subdued all her sexual drive.”

To rce the wag time required by California law and to avoid publicy, Colbert and Prsman were married by a jtice of the peace Yuma, Arizona, on Christmas Eve 1935. Shortly before, Colbert had started buildg a $200,000 whe neo-Geian dream hoe at 615 North Farg Road Holmby Hills. Digned by the fashnable archect Wallace Neff, was rated wh the help of stumer Adrian, Billy Ha, and Hazel Ray Davis, an eclectic mélange of perds and mos—English, Che, and high Hollywood morne. She planned for the hoe to acmodate her mother, who lived there ially. When Edie Goetz learned of Colbert’s marriage plans, she mand of her iend, “Do you want this marriage to work?” Colbert rpond, “Of urse”—provokg Goetz to exclaim, “Well then, move your mother out of the hoe!” Embolned at last at age 32 to sever the apron strgs, Colbert built a hoe for her mother nearby and stalled her there style. “She kept her mother very expensively, wh a r and driver,” Helen O’Hagan says. Like a dutiful French hoewife, every Friday night Colbert assembled the entire clan for dner.

The marriage between Prsman and Colbert was “pannable,” Leonora Hornblow says. Both were wholly dited to their work, and highly distguished their fields. The son of a Philalphia fabric wholaler, Prsman had attend the Universy of Virgia and Harvard Medil School before gog to California, where he helped found U.C.L.A.’s Divisn of Head and Neck Surgery. His ft surgil touch was so renowned that when Samuel Goldwyn’s wife, Franc, elected to have her face lifted, she sisted on Dr. Prsman. She may have requted the kdly doctor for another reason as well. “Jack Prsman was the bt-lookg man, darlg,” Jean Howard says. “What we ed to ll a ‘charmer.’”

In 1938—the year Colbert, wh an aggregate salary of $426,944, was named by the U.S. Treasury Department as the send-hight wage earner Hollywood (after Louis B. Mayer) and the fourth-hight-paid rporate employee Amer-i—the Prsmans fally found time for a belated honeymoon. Their four-month holiday, which took them to Italy, France, and St. Anton, Atria, for skig, was btally terpted by the arrival of Nazi troops Vienna. “German soldiers thronged the streets and people were heilg Hler all over the place,” Colbert said. “It ma me so sad and fur.”

Back Hollywood, Leonora Hornblow rells, “the mute she me home om the stud she was Mrs. Joel Jay Prsman. That was the name she ed on her statnery.” Early her marriage Colbert learned not to expect her hband to rt her to gala affairs or movie premier. “The last premiere I took him to—oh, was years ago,” Colbert told a reporter 1962, “I heard a loud snore. That was . A surgeon has a hard day. Mt he have to suffer at night, too?” Prsman eventually fell so far out of the Hollywood loop that one eveng when he acpanied his wife to a party the doctor spent most of the night talkg to a blon he had never before met. On the way home Colbert asked her hband if he was aware whose attentn he had managed to monopolize. “No, who was she?” he quired. “That,” she replied, “was Marilyn Monroe!”

Though Louella Parsons, wh jtifitn, rated the Prsmans’ marriage “one of Hollywood’s most succsful,” the uple did experience their share of tribulatns. “They wanted very much to have children. But by the time they started tryg, was too late,” says Helen Prsman, the widow of Jack’s attorney brother, Harold. “It was very sad.” The problem, seems, was not jt that Colbert had postponed motherhood for the sake of her reer. Prsman may also have been renred sterile as a rult of ntractg the mumps at age 19. At one pot the uple nsired adoptn. “Some tws me on the market out Hollywood,” a iend remembers. “Through his medil nnectns, Jack heard about them. But at the last mute they changed their mds. Those tws turned out to be the on Joan Crawford took.”

Perhaps was Colbert’s tratn at beg prived of a child, or maybe was only the ual temptatns of Hollywood, that led her, jt twice, to ntemplate actns that might have jeopardized her marriage. Colbert always spoke admirgly of Ray Milland, wh whom she ma three films, and was probably wh as much quettish regret as llegial rpect that she relled him. While they were makg Skylark (1941), Milland, an irristible Lothar, proposned her. After some hatn Colbert fally nsented to an assignatn at her secretary’s apartment Wtwood. “On the way there, she said to herself, ‘No, I jt n’t do .’ And she turned around and drove home,” says a Hollywood source. “Cltte’s problem, you see, was that she jt uld not lie. It was not her character.”

In the early 40s durg a trip to Sun Valley (where Colbert’s skig prows was renowned), she sudnly beme fatuated wh a powerful film-dtry executive. If, as one timate claims, she briefly ntemplated a liaison wh this man, she quickly me to her sens when Prsman beme a manr the Navy Medil Corps, statned as a flight surgeon on a Pacific battlhip. In the end, the iend nclus, “Cltte never, never cheated on Jack.”

Hollywood folklorists, at least sce the 40s, have recurrently lked Marlene Dietrich’s name to Colbert’s. Columnist Liz Smh theoriz that the legend of a sapphic romance between the two Paramount divas probably n be traced back to a much-published photograph of Dietrich and Colbert slidg down a “chute-the-chute” together, the French actrs fortably wedged between her German unterpart’s bare and shapely legs. Snapped 1935 at a party Carole Lombard gave at a seasi amement park, the picture has evolved over the years to a kd of lbian talisman. Leonard Gershe says, “Cltte said some photographer phed her up there. Anyway, Marlene and Cltte didn’t even like each other. Dietrich scribed her as ‘that ugly Cltte Colbert, so shopgirl French.’” Jean Howard also rejects the mor pletely. “Cltte was not a physil girl.” As ristant to bunkg as most myths, the nard of Colbert and Dietrich’s supposed affair has assumed a life of s own. Jt two weeks after Colbert’s ath, the Natnal Enquirer ran a story, tossg Garbo’s name for good measure, headled secret cltte lbert took to her grave—she was a lbian.

Durg the war, Colbert—whose per-picture rate now hovered between $150,000 and $200,000—ma about two movi a year. Simultaneoly, she volunteered wh the Red Cross, participated the Hollywood Victory Caravan, and etted about relativ strand occupied France. In 1942’s The Palm Beach Story, Colbert proved herself at 39 still to be, Graham Greene’s words, “the most charmg light edy actrs on the screen.” Colbert’s one great wartime picture, for which she received an Amy Award nomatn, was David O. Selznick’s synoptic Sce You Went Away (1944), tend to apotheosize the women at the home ont the same way that his Gone wh the Wd had exalted the bell of the Civil War. For Hollywood aficnados, the enormoly stly parable ($3.257 ln) is bt remembered as the backdrop agast which producer Selznick, then 41 and married, lnched his tumultuo love affair wh 24-year-old Jennifer Jon—even as he oversaw the performance of Robert Walker, his paramour’s hband and the father of her two children, the same film. Further snarlg this tangled ske of emotns, Selznick, early the productn, ma an awkward pass at Colbert, wh the rult that the great filmmaker end up wrg a letter of apology to Prsman.

Jennifer Jon reflects: “Consirg that she was a iend of Irene Selznick’s [David O.’s wife] and Edie Goetz [his sister--law], Cltte was always very charmg and lightful to me. Her last movie for the stud was a vapid edy, Practilly Yours, which upled her aga wh Fred MacMurray, and though Colbert acknowledged the stud’s generosy, she was exhilarated to be pennt at last. “I believe that I have reached a stage where nothg is gaed by a long-term ntract,” she remarked. “Now I am gog to do what I wish.”

One of the bt cisns she ma after her liberatn om her stud was to take the starrg role Tomorrow Is Forever (1946), oppose Orson Well. Parisian playwright Pierre Barillet says he had heard that while enactg the film’s most melodramatic scene, Colbert leaned her lugubr face on Well’s knee as directed—only to disver that the actor, as a prank, had put a balloon si his pants and was pumpg up to make look as if he were gettg an erectn. “When I asked her about the episo,”Barillet says, “she refed to discs . Where sex was ncerned, she was very lite. Yet, at the same time, she loved to e slang words other ntexts.”

Patricia Meda (Mrs. Joseph Cotten), who had a small part another of Colbert’s 1946 releas, The Secret Heart, says, “Cltte loved to swear! If you ask me, she was a mixture of a sailor and a duchs. We had been rehearsg together for a week. Came the day we were to shoot, I was fally lled onto the set. I said, ‘Good morng, Miss Colbert.’ She replied, ‘Who the fuck are you?’ I looked behd me and realized she was talkg to me. ‘I’m Patricia Meda. We’ve been rehearsg all week.’ ‘Well, what the Devil have you done wh your face?’ she mand. I explaed that I had jt e om the makp man. ‘Go wash your face!’ she shouted. I told her I uldn’t—he was so nice, he had worked so awfully hard. And she asked, ‘Do you want to be a star the makp room or on the screen?’ It was te—MGM had a set face that ma everyone look like Margaret O’Brien. Then, toward the end of the day they were dog a shot over my shoulr of Cltte’s face. At five, she says, ‘O.K., that’s . I’m out of here!’ The meraman said, ‘Miss Colbert, jt one last close-up.’ And she said, ‘They’ve seen close-ups of me for 20 years. Why not do one of what I’ve been lookg at?’—and she left. Cltte Colbert was BIG—and as hont as the California sun.”

Colbert had two good reasons for her proviso—not unual among stars—that she be off the set by five o’clock. First, as she was now past 40, she felt that her face would look fatigued by that hour. Send, she wanted to go home to Jack. Bee she was so flexible on this pot, however, she end up losg a job she badly need to mata her standg Hollywood. In 1947, buoyed up by her latt—and, as turned out, her last—mercial succs, a back-to-the-farm farce lled The Egg and I (the penultimate Colbert-MacMurray vehicle), Colbert was next led up to play the wife Frank Capra’s State of the Unn oppose Spencer Tracy. But Capra, refg to grant her the five p.m. cutoff time, brought Kathare Hepburn stead.

Possibly the real culpr the State of the Unn bacle was neher Capra nor Hepburn, but Colbert’s brother. Te to form, Mme. Chcho had broken up her dghter’s thrivg workg relatnship wh Feldman by sistg that she employ her son as an agent stead. “My brother, Charl, God bls his soul, was my agent,” Colbert told Rex Reed. “And God save me.” Leonora Hornblow says potedly, “Charl was petent. His mother built him up so much he jt assumed everyone else was jealo of him. My hband told Cltte, ‘He is losg good opportuni for you.’ Everyone who knew her and red about her said the same thg.” Eventually, Colbert mtered the urage to fire him, but not before more damage was done.

The next blow to Colbert’s star stat me as a rult of an jury she staed while filmg Three Came Home(1950), a harrowg real-life acunt of a woman’s ternment a Japane prisoner-of-war mp. Colbert took the film’s grty realism so much earnt that for the sake of thenticy she allowed herself to appear sweaty and unkempt, and even permted the forbidn shots of her right profile. But she rried her qut for verisiu too far when, on the last day of shootg, she sisted on playg her own vlent rape scene rather than enlist a stuntwoman for the task. “I ptured a disc, cracked a vertebra, and land the hospal,” she told Rex Reed. It might all have been worth her while—she earned cril plds for her efforts—but for the fact that she was slated to beg shootg Twentieth Century Fox’s All About Eve immediately afterward, playg the role of Margo Channg, a character that had been wrten for her. “Fox uldn’t have been nicer,” Colbert told a reporter. “They waed two months for me, and Joe Mankiewicz, the director, was adorable.… Eventually they went wh Bette Davis, who was fantastic, as you well know.” Today is nearly impossible to image anyone but Bette Davis rnatg that superb role. Yet Joseph Mankiewicz’s stg of Anne Baxter as Eve Harrgton mak much more sense light of his tentn for Colbert to play the malevolent syphant’s mentor. “Joe’s ia origally was that Anne Baxter as a young girl looked very much like me,” Colbert said. “And that was the pot of , that this young girl had this fixatn about this actrs.… When Bette did the role, beme a whole different thg.… I cried for two years over that.”

In 1982, at the Amerin Film Instute’s tribute to Frank Capra L.A. (Colbert and he had fally renciled), the actrs was wag for an elevator when Bette Davis sudnly stung her wh the barbed remark “I got even, didn’t I?” Colbert relled to Reed, “She never revered om the fact that 1934, when she was up for Of Human Bondage, I won the Osr for It Happened One Night. Then, years later, she got the role of Margo Channg, which would have been one of the plum rol of my reer. She had been stg on this thg for 50 years and I had fotten all about ! Oh well, as I have always said, the bt rol were bch, and she proved .”

Takg advantage of a U.S. law that allowed a portn of e earned abroad to rema untaxed, Colbert went to Europe om 1951 to 1953 to make two movi, Outpost Malaya and Dghters of Dty. Though her film reer had slipped to an irreversible cle, fancially, at least, she was excellent shape. On weekends the Prsmans would fly to their Palm Sprgs untry hoe the Beechcraft Bonanza sgle-enge plane that Colbert had given her hband as a prent. They also bought a ranch Northern California, where the doctor voted himself to raisg show ttle. Colbert rented a ttage Cap-Ferrat, too, reasong that would look too ostentat if she traveled to France simply to buy her ctom-ma Anglisano sho Paris. “Cltte was extravagant,” says adman Peter Rogers. “I never, ever saw her qutn the price of anythg.”

Solvent enough to turn down a ln-dollar broadst al wh NBC 1954, Colbert nohels was not above lendg her talents to the young medium of televisn. Among her several televised theatril engagements the 50s was Noël Coward’s Blhe Spir of 1956 (-starrg Lren Ball as the ghost wife), which ocsned the disgntled playwright’s famo remark about her neck. “The problem between her and Noël Coward was that he expected her to be letter-perfect each day at rehearsals, and Cltte sisted on holdg the script,” Leonard Gershe says. Tired of Coward’s relentls badgerg, Colbert one day said self-fense, “I know my part backwards.” To which he replied, “And that’s exactly how you’re readg .”

That same year, Colbert ma her Broadway eback, fillg for Margaret Sullavan for two months Carolyn Green’s Jan, at the Plymouth Theater. “I’ve wanted to get back on the stage for a long time,” Colbert told the New York Journal-Amerin, “but you know my hband. He didn’t want me away.” Hband or no, once Colbert reverted to the theater, there was no turng back. In 1958 she was rned wh Charl Boyer Llie Stevens’s The Marriage-Go-Round, which ran for 450 performanc and toured 13 stat. She returned regularly to the theater up through the mid-80s. (Her last show was 1985’s Aren’t We All? wh Rex Harrison, which traveled throughout the untry and for five months Atralia.) “I was on the screen for 30 years and never did get ed to gettg up at five the morng,” she explaed. “In the theater you stay up late, and you sleep late the morng. It’s a lic life.”

“Cltte was so smart—she knew the right moment to leave Hollywood,” says Leonard Gershe. “She arrived at that realizatn at a dner at the Goetz’ 1958. Natalie Wood me around and kissed all good night, sayg she was leavg bee she had to be makp at six a.m. I saw a look e over Cltte’s face—she had set her md. ‘What the hell do I need to be here for?’ she asked herself. ‘I’ll probably never have to be makp aga at six a.m.’” Observ Nancy Reagan, who first met Colbert 1950 at the hoe of MGM chief Dore Schary, “I admire Cltte. She had the sense to know when to pull back.”

In 1958, while Colbert was Europe wag for her Paris wardrobe for The Marriage-Go-Round, she entered to a volatile and plited iendship wh a woman which she me to regret bterly. One eveng at a nightclub on Capri, Colbert stck up a nversatn wh a wealthy pater and photographer named Verna Hull, the dghter of Garbo’s psychiatrist, Dr. Vernon Herbst, and the stepdghter of a Sears Roebuck heirs. Hull’s openg le to Colbert was “I miss my r”—a Lln Contental that she had exchanged wh Sammy Davis Jr. for his Thunrbird. Colbert—who had been iendly wh Frank Satra and his Rat Pack ever sce the sger’s pal Pat DiCic latched onto the movie star on a tra ri to California—replied, “I drove that r once, down to Frank Satra’s Palm Sprgs. I liked so much I went out and bought one jt like blue.” They saw each other a send time, and, lighted by Hull’s backstage vis after the openg of The Marriage-Go-Round at the Plymouth Theatre, Colbert lled Jean Howard for Hull’s telephone number. From that moment on, the two beme separable. They pated together, traveled together, and even rented tw pentho at 136 East 64th Street, which the drs signer Sophie Gimbel of Saks Fifth Avenue (owned by her hband’s fay) found for them near her own town hoe. The iendship flowered bee of their mutual tert art, and bee Colbert, whose theatril obligatns now kept her apart om her hband for months at a time, “loathed beg alone— was a kd of paranoia. The problem, emerged, was that Farrow had jt been offered a part abroad the film A Dandy Aspic, and she didn’t know if Satra would acpany her if she accepted. “You should work,” Colbert advised her. “But don’t ever let Frank see you like this.” Farrow says, “Cltte was quick to mother me, soothe Frank. As he lay dyg, Colbert received a strange bullet om Frank Buono, her tate manager. Via a letter, Verna Hull had begged him to warn Colbert that Prsman might at any moment seize the gun om the Bellerive safe and kill her, possibly himself too, orr to take her wh him when he died. Offend and crlo, Colbert marched through the openg the fence that separated her property om Hull’s, exhortg her neighbor’s startled maid: “Tell your mistrs I will never see her or speak to her aga for the rt of my life!” And to make sure Hull knew she meant to stand by her words, she returned everythg Hull had ever given her durg their ne-year iendship.

Prsman had never been happy about Hull—Mia Farrow says the doctor ed to refer to Hull as “the monster.” Probably he disliked her for the same reason he felt uneasy about sociale Jerry Zipk. Colbert habually breakfasted alone by her bedroom, emergg jt before lunch fas-tidly ma up and meticuloly iffed—the face and hair required one hour. Twice a day she would swim the backstroke for half an hour, wearg a bathg p, a long-sleeved leotard (to protect her arms om the sun), and her full maquillage. Lunch was served the pagoda on Pierre Dx place mats, tea took place at five, drks were passed before dner, and the eveng guts ate their meal doors, where fger bowls and her Spo Darlgton or Crown Derby cha were rigur. “She’d get so nervo that everythg had to be impecble,” says Leonard Gershe. “She went to hysterics the day Brooke Astor, who was stayg wh Pamela Harriman, me over for tea—and Mrs. Astor never even went doors. She had a f, too, before Joan Colls and Rob Hurlstone vised 1992. But the mute she heard them g up the stairs, the actrs Cltte took over. And durg her stays New York, where she now had a rental apartment on Fifth Avenue, Helen O’Hagan took to sleepg on the livg-room sofa so Colbert wouldn’t be alone. In 1984, Colbert upgrad to a two-bedroom apartment the same buildg, and O’Hagan moved . “I was workg at Saks and had to be bed much earlier than Cltte. And she tried very, very hard, whout any succs, to learn to walk aga.” She ntued to enterta at Bellerive, though she often sat, the midst of nvivial gathergs, as aloofly mute as a sphx. Early 1996, producer A. C.
